Well, I finally had time to play Operation Anchorage and was unimpressed. The
DLC adds about 5 hours of play. I finished this DLC at level 8 and it becomes
available at level 2, in other words right when one leaves the vault.
The DLC has one's character aiding the Outcasts in opening a vault. The
character's Pipboy is needed to interface with a virtual reality simulator in
order to obtain the password to open the vault. The simulation is of the battle
for Anchorage. The snowy environment is a welcome change, however, the game play
is not. The entire DLC is played as a shooter. One finds healing icons and ammo
icons, as well as some weapons and ammo at convenient locations as in any
shooter. There is virtually no dialog. There are only two speech checks. The
first time you talk with the Quartermaster, if you make the speech check, then
he will give you a Gauss Rifle. This is nice, but not necessary. I will deal
with the second one later.
The DLC promised the opportunity to control a squad. If saying either wait here
or charge is your idea of controlling a squad, then you will love this DLC. I
did not. I had no trouble killing everything. When confronting the end boss, a
speech check gets him to commit suicide.
Upon leaving the simulator and opening the vault, the Outcasts will be divided
about giving you your reward. Combat ensues. The good things in the vault are
Winterized T51B Power Armor and Helmet and the Gauss Rifle. The Gauss Rifle is
disappointing. It is essentially the sniper rifle of Energy Weapons. It sucks in
most combats because you can get off only one shot in VATS. It does not really
do as much damage as it promises either. The Pulse Rifle is a far superior
overall weapon.
Finally, there are 10 Intel Packages scattered through the simulation. If one
collects all ten one gets the Special Perk, Covert Ops, which grants one 3
points in Lockpick, Sneak, and Small Guns. In other words, it sucks. One bright
spot is that completing the simulator automatically grants one the Special Perk
Power Armor Training, so, one may immediately use the Winterized T51B Power
Armor found in the vault.
This DLC is mildly entertaining, but hardly worth the price.
