Hello there,
I have to admit that I really was skeptical before this EuroGT as
there was so much insecurity at the beforehand organisation... To be
honest if my flight was not been booked half a year ago I think I
would have cancelled my participation in january.
But then I really liked this EuroGT!
It was the first time I visited Warhammer World and the medieval
surrounding at the games was breathtaking as well as Bugman's was a
great place to meet and relax between the games (Cheers to the crew
there!)
I had some great and exciting games with my Bretonnians.
1st game Pitched Battle vs Damien's Vampires. Although I had a small
triumph destroying his brigade of ethereals and grave guards he made
a rush with his Grave Knights towards my knights in round three -
took three of them out and due to lack of time that was it. Damien
won!
After this game I saw that there was not enough time for me playing
2k pts and being captain at the same time so I switched over to 1,6
which was ok (to be honest I prefer 2k games too).
2nd game PB vs Martyn and his Orks. I concentrated on Martyn's right
flank - took out a brigade of ork boyz with two units of squires and
one grail knight. Nxt round I lured a unit of ogres out of the wood
with my surviving squires and knights and basically that was the game
as the Orks did not really manage to move their lonh line towards
their attacked flank. Oh, and Gerroff is a pesky little spell...
3rd round I barracked and walked around and relaxed. Helped out Ian a
bit with his game (although I was not too much of a help I fear...)
We had some nice talks at Bugman's afterwards and then went to the
evening meal which lacked a bit of the social atmosphere we normally
have at EuroGTs. But to find a good point there too we ate where all
our games designers are eating, yeah ;-)...
Ah yes, and it was raining saturday... and sunday. But who cares when
playing in a great gaming hall.
Sunday morning, Pitched Battle game against Lex's Dwarfs. Basically
we did a bit of a waltz. I went to the right flank - Lex followed me
with his army. He could'nt (or did not want to) keep his Troll
Slayers back so they fulfilled their oath fighting my defended and
counterattacking spearmen - the Clan Warriors that supported them
died in a flank attack by my knights afterwards. Just before a
gyrocopter that went off to my ranks before his colleague could
accompany him was brought to the ground by my Pegasi. The other one
coming late survived a flank attack by my knights. Then we had to
end. A Draw!
Last Game on sunday, King of the Hill vs Ian's Tomb Kings. I managed
to take the Hill with two Knights in the first turn and destroyed his
catapults and one unit of bowmen with my pegasus knights. But Ian
killed the Pegasi nxt turn and took out the knights on the hill
easily with a front/flank combination of 2 chariots and carrions.
Only when making his advance move he had the bad luck of bouncing off
the front of the next knights waiting (despite the extra attacks the
tomb king gave them). The following turn I took the left marker with
my squires and reconquered the hill-marker killing his chariots. And
I made an all out attack with my infantry and the other knights.
Although a unit of grail knights was chased back by some skeleton
infantry this and the next round was a success as the bretonnians
could break the undead (still no easy game as my bretonnians were one
unit short of losing by breakpoint from round two on). Win!
At the end I was a bit disappointed that no one even mentioned the
results. It was all about the prizes which the losing empire could go
for as first. So our empire won and we did neither have the best
prizes nor the fame :-( Well, why bothering going to war then
anyway? ;-)
Request: It would still be very interesting if someone posted the end
results here somewhere.
My fellow gamers of the Yellow Empire did a very good job. Thanks to
John with his Kislev (our defender in the last line), Peter with his
Elves, Claus and Jon with their Daemons, Mark with his Ancients,
Arjan with his Sisters and Tim with Shadow Warriors. I especially
want to thank Arjan at this point. As an old veteran he knew the
importance of the meta-game and I did not have to bother with
Mortheim - I just told him what I needed. (As I heard he sometimes
sacrificed the good of his sisters to get us the intel we needed)
Adding some further comments:
I had no problem not being the only guests at the Gaming Hall. Maybe
some of the youngsters around at least know what Warmaster is now (I
am used to be playing introducing games in a shopping mall). And the
reason why some of us felt lost in the big hall might be that this
time only half the players were coming. I remember EuroGTs with
around 60 players!
I just read the rules in the plane to London and I have to say that
they were easy enough I got them before arriving - absolutely a plus
from my side. The color of the flags was confusing me a bit too (I
once sent my armies attacking Lex although I wanted to attack Wayne).
But I got used to it after some time.
I also think that the result the university has is an issue - but I
already talked about that.
Besides that I really think that Sia, Markus and David who did a
smooth organising job all in all!
There was no rush when handing over the commands everybody could have
a look at the map and see what's going on, the jetons were a good
idea as anybody could see exactly how much victory points the empires
had. The opponents were matched swiftly and smooth.
@Playing vs same armies: Every organiser of tournaments knows that
it's not always easy to avoid a player playing the same opponent
twice - but nobody playing against the same army twice? To be honest
I don't know how that should be done especially if an opponent empire
has let's say two or three Daemon armies or Orks ...
To all those who made it until here,
very warm greetings,
Gerald
