Lots of new machines are coming out with 8, 16, and in some cases, 32 megs of
video RAM. There have been problems reported with ED and some of these cards; if
you're running ED for Windows successfully with an 8, 16, or 32 meg video card,
let the rest of know what you're doing right:)

Just got registered to "empire-deluxe@egroups.com" & wouldn't you know, the first forwarded letter that comes in is about the latest trouble I had with empire deluxe & fixed! I hope this letter is going in the write place as I am simply using my "reply" button as this first letter forwarded to me says nothing about replying or responding. At any rate would someone please let me know one way or the other.

I have the "ATI All In Wonder" 8Meg TV/Video/Display card & found it didn't work with my Empire Deluxe game with Win98. So I tried running my "All In Wonder" graphics card in low resolution (640 X 480) with out installing the "extra" drivers for the gadgets (TV/Video) & in fact only installed the Microsoft 640 X 480 driver & ED now runs fine! I made new "Hardware Profiles" in "System Properties" located in "Control Panel". So when I boot my Pentium II 300Mhz It stops in mid stride to ask me what "Hardware Profile" I want to run. I have 4 Hardware Profiles. One for low resolution with Generic or Microsoft 640 X 480 driver & no "extra" drivers for the gadgets (TV/Video). One for Medium (600 X 800) resolution using all my ATI drivers. One with High resolution (1024 X 768) with all my ATI drivers including the gadgets (TV/Video) drivers (SOME TV/VIDEO PROBLEMS). And finally one for very high resolution with only ATI graphic drivers without the gadgets (TV/Video) drivers so there's no trouble caused by the gadgets (TV/Video) drivers. Hope this helps with other high resolution cards as well.

I was wondering if anyone has any rumors about any new development of
Empire. I heard about two years ago that someone was looking at updating
ED, but I've not seen anything since then. I was just wondering if anyone
else has heard anything recently. Empire is just about my favorite game of
all time (next to Civ).

Yes, I'm having problems running ED now with Win 98. It's the first time
I've tried to run it since I upgraded to 98. I have an ATI xpert 98 8meg
video card. I get a message saying it crashed with a problem in dibeng.dll.
Whatever that means. Any ideas?

Thanks

Does anyone know how I can get ED for Windows? Way back when I first got
ED, Windows was still a new thing, and it was going to be awhile before
I finally got over my Leonard McCoy-ish distrust of Windows and
switched, so I opted for the DOS version.

Computer game magazines nearly always include on or the other in their "top ten of all-time" lists. The depth of gameplay in the "Civ" series is unmatched in the strategy genre. Civ games are endlessly replayable. If you've never played Civ, I urge you to rush out now and buy a copy, because you don't know what a great, satisfying, and addictive gaming experience you're missing. "Civilization II Gold Edition" (an enhanced multiplayer version) is available now and can be found at nearly any software retail store. You can find out more and can purchase the game from the publisher's website, www.microprose.com.

Gary, I received exactly the same error message, about dibeng.dll. Just go to
the ATI website (http://support.atitech.ca) and get a driver for 16-bit
applications for the 3D Rage Pro chipset. It will solve your problem.

For those of you who are unaware, there is software available that simulates direct modem-to-modem communication over the internet. This software, COMt 2.0, makes head-to-head play of ED possible over the internet. No need to swap e-mail files back and forth -- just launch COMt 2.0 on both computers, choose one as a master and the other as a slave, and start a game. The players just take turns like a hotseat game. COMt 2.0 is shareware, and you can get it and full instructions on how to use it with ED at the following website: http://mars.superlink.net/user/mok/html/edlive.html Happy EDing! --Scott Slaughter

Great response guys! I guess it's a Diamond Monster 16 MB for my dream
rig. Two quick questions for the techies out there: If I download an
earlier driver to play ED, will it affect newer Windows 95 or 98 game
viewing? And more esoterically, if I buy a new rig, and specifically
have another video card installed, will I have compatability problems
with the installed software, and will the drivers be up to date? Thanks

I was hospitalized for six months in 1996 and in the summer of that year I
requested from 3DO an upgrade from ED dos to ED windows since I like to play it
as I convolese. I was instructed by 3DO to send in my dos disks and $10, which
I did (no I am brain damaged and not an idiot so I DID keep a copy) and 3DO
never sent me the windows disks. This dispite numerous calls to the company
where they would assure me that the problem would be solved. Just last month I
contacted, again, customer service. This time by email and not by phone.
After trading emails for a few days, the customer service people, bless their
hearts sent me a CD of ED master's edition.
So for those of you looking for ED windows or otherwise.....3DO has them in
stock.

The password keeper has all the player's passwords so that if someone craps
out on the game you can recruit another player and keep going. I am in a
delightful 6 player game that has been on for nearly 2 years but is now
seeming to stall. If one of the players poops out on us the "keeper" would
get another player and tell them the password so the game goes on.

Empire is just about my favorite game of > > all time (next to Civ). > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Civ" is a reference to arguably the tow most popular and succesful strategy computer games of all-time, "Sid Meiers' Civilization" and "Civilization II." Computer game magazines nearly always include on or the other in their "top ten of all-time" lists.

In a multi player game, if one guy stops playng, the password keeper can
resign him so the game can go on without him/her.

Comrades,

Earth Scenario, each continent played by a different person, and
everyone starts with maybe a dozen cities each, the cities that are
nearest to the start city.

There will be a password keeper, and anyone who holds a turn up for
more than 24 or 36 hours is warned in the first instance and replaced
in the second.

Who is in? First in best dressed....
