I bought a copy from Microcenter for $3 a few years back on its discount
shelf. It was well worth the price.

OK, you have me curious. I did not know about this book, and have been
doing fairly well without it, but there is always room for improvement. Does
anyone know where you can get or buy or download a copy of this book now?

Does anyone have Empire Deluxe webpages who are NOT in the Webring? If so,
contact Tim Roberts (troberts@...).

I was thinking that perhaps we should all have the little bit of HTML at the
bottom of our pages that allows people to sign up to this list. The list
started at around 40 people, when the old dartmouth list shut down, and now
is almost into triple figures. And I think we should make it as easy as
possible to subscribe for newbies.

Also, has anyone thought of contacting the authors of the Straegy Guide to
see if they know where we can get copies? I would be quite happy to have a
part of my webpage (I have to redesign the old beast) given over to putting
tips from the book on the web, if anyone would like that kind of service
(since the book seems to be unobtainable).

Or (if the copyright holders consider the book to be abandonware) I would be
happy to make a photocopied master that people can request copies of and get
them sent if they pay for the postage (although being in Aus, I think this
might best be done by someone in North America, since the postage for such a
thing from here would be horrendous)

Thoughts?

Couple of notes to add:

The old Dartmouth list has not completely shut down due to laziness of the
owner, me. It will be shutdown in two weeks though. I'm revamping my
website to indicate that the players' list is being taken off my website
too. I suggest that we use the Egroups database feature to indicate who's
interested in playing a game and what type. There are a lot of interesting
features to the database section and best of all, everyone can edit their
own entry with no lag time.

I had thought about scanning the book and converting to Adobe PDF format,
but it IS against the copyright (75 years after original publication UNLESS
the copyright holders renew it). We can ask if they are interested in
publishing it as an electronic document with a charge per download though...

I played the game quite happily for seven years before the guide came out. Does it make me a better player? Possibly but the games basic concepts are so elegantly simple that I think it only gives a small advantage. I myself would be willing to answer strategy guide related questions within reason.

Don't know were your can but the book.  I got mine right after I first bought
Empire.  The combat tables in the back of the book make it valuable.  Good
luck at finding one.

Hi,
I have one of the Strategy Guides as well and I got mine directly from the
publisher who is Prima Publishing. While I don't know if you could still get
one, it might be worth a try to give them a call. There number is
916.786.0329 You may want to check the area code, they way they change them
all the time it may not be correct. The company is located in El Dorado
Hills, CA.
Hope this helps

Note, I already have a tips section in the vault. If you or anybody
else would like to add some tips & trucks, please do so.

I'm currently redesinging the Empire Vault to become a Yahoo type of
index for Empire Deluxe stuff. With this redesign, I'm also planning
to reintroduce The Game Tracker that was thought up by Charles. This
would do let you setup games, notify you of game turns, ... all
online (except for playing). I'm telling this, because I'm wondering
if this would be appreciated. What does everybody think? I'm not
going to spent lot's of time if nobody is going to use it.

If you want to put it online, I'm happy to provide some space, if it
becomes abandonware of course.

Following Dave's suggestion, I created a sample database at
http://www.egroups.com/database/empire-deluxe with an entry for me.

Before everyone goes filling it in, we should determine all the
required fields and probably have it re-created by the moderator.

OK, I reset the table requirements. There should be a way for each member
to own their record, but since we have to trust each other to play the game,
I guess we have to trust each other not to edit someone else's entry.

I also figured out that date formats are not international, so I changed my
entry.

Thanks,

A database created by a subscriber can be edited or deleted by a moderator,
so the fact you created it is no big deal for maintenance purposes.

Some suggested fields:

Number of Tournaments in which player participated.

Preferences: such as game type 1) ED Live, 2) EDSecure, 3) multiplayer
games vs. head-to-head
game settings: color preferences if any; what level of production; wrap map
or not; any AI's included.

Also add: estimate of number of turns per week player prefers to play (from
1 to 7).

Time Zone if prefers ED Live

david.m.bott@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

I've been meaning to follow through on my shutdown of both the EPIG email
list and my ED and E2 PBEM Players' Lists but have been so busy I haven't
done it....until now.

EPIG is officially deleted from the listserver at Dartmouth and is no more.

My website (except for the EPBEM FAQ) is being scrapped too. I was going
to offer the Players' List to someone else to maintain, but I realized that
it is over a year and a half old! Some people have sent me requests to
edit the list, but I haven't followed through. I have a text copy of the
players and their email addresses (many of which are long abandoned) plus a
whole set of emails asking to be edited or added to the list if anyone
wishes to use it as a method of developing a new Players' List. However, I
suggest that it would be more efficient to create a new site or use the
database in egroups rather than try and work from an 18 month old list.

I will be leaving pages up on my website that will show up and indicate
that my website is no longer functional. The main reason I am writing this
email is to ask the list members for a suggestion of the best website or
websites on ED to use as a link or redirect from my pages. Each page will
now have text that goes something like:

Sorry, this Empire Deluxe and Empire II website is no longer functional due
to constraints on my time. There are still many active players of this
venerable strategy game and in fact new software has enabled head-to-head
play over the internet in real time or has allowed the elimination of
security holes which cheaters used to exploit. I suggest you visit the
websites on ED listed below:
X link
Y link
Z link

My thought is to direct them to the egroups webpage for this list, to
the ED webring home page and maybe one or two other sites.

Suggestions are welcome.

Hey all,

The database appears to support a maximum of 10 fields. I have selected a
set based on the comments I have seen. If I could get concurrence that it
meets peoples needs, I will invite group memebers to enter a record for
themselves.

A couple notes to make sorting work well:

Just use 'yes' or 'no'; put comments after if desired.
Use a Year-Month-Day format so that old entries can be sorted to the back.

Subject: EDSecure?

What is EDSecure?

EDSecure is a shell developed by Tim Roberts that controls the start and end of an ED PBEM game such that turn replays and other cheats easily accomplished in the original ED cannot be done.  There is also provision for dropping a player from a multiplayer game, even if you can no longer get their password.  Finally, there are plugin's that allow EDSecure to use your email program to automatically send your file as an attachment to the next player.

This is a shell, which means it is a program that "wraps around" the original ED game.  You must have a working copy of ED on your computer to use EDSecure.

EDSecure was in beta testing and I believe it will be released as a full version 1.0 by New Years.

I hope I didn't spoil Tim's timing on this.  The website is open to all right now:

http://edsecure.armageddonsoftware.com/

Here's the description on the website:

The goal of EDSecure is to protect your game of Empire Deluxe against any non-hacker. Some of the typical cheats it protects against are:
Replay cheats
Odds cheats
Resignation cheats
Game mirroring cheats
etc..
EDSecure also provides a number of features to help manage your games
Extensive options
Mail enabled (via Plugins)
Turn reminders
Game notes
Color preferences
Combat calculator
Production calculator
Password keeper
Forced player resignation in multi-player games
Full tournament generation and tracking
Ability to convert existing game to a secured format
Ability to automate existing games

Hi. Would like to take a look at EDSecure, but the link you provided will
not allow me to find it. Could you check and let me know if there is one
that will?
