(cross posted at "The Swarm Forum".
Greetings Folks,
I finally sat down and completely redid my sci fi mod. As of the moment it is
only the "Crystalins" and a "Sea Monster".

The main features are:
Naming convention that is easily expandable to new races
An AI that will expand appropriately
Separate AI unis with no drain - which helps them produce units
Limited types of AI units - which prevents them from making useless units
Enough unit types for human fun - which lets you try different strategies
Graphics for all units done by me - um, I think. If you find any I stole please
let me know.

It just needs play testing and a few graphics. Who would like first shot at it?

Please contact me via:
gryphin.rampant - @ - gmail.com
(without the dashes or spaces)
Do not use the yahoo email. I never look at it.

Ready to play. Give me a shout, set up the game you wish to play and let's go.
I try to return a move as soon as it hits my in box. Silent games are O.K., but
I do enjoy chatting with my opponent ( I enjoy the personal touch ) can't cross
talk with an AI.

I am an accountant, so very busy this final week of tax season.  But I will be happy to send you a game next week if that is okay.  I also do not mind being chatty.

Already set up the game.  I almost prefer just two live persons with two AI, the game turns can go so much faster rather than waiting for them to go around to several.

If you are interested, here is a game...

Greetings Darrell,

Long time. If I didn't have several on the go now and playing World of Tanks online, I'd take you up on the game.

Surely there must be someone else that can accept the challenge.

never heard of World of Tanks.  Is it good?  Must be if you are involved.

I wrote this in response to another player.  I have been "out of service" quite a while due to health issues.  Am now semi-retired, waiting on my disability checks to begin.  So I am now venturing back into game play.  I am so sorry I disappeared before.  I hope my son let you know what was going on.

Hi Armand,

It could be a factor of several things:
-- size of map being used – produces large forces
- complexity of the map (bottle necks for units, etc)
- size of the force, again he gets into traffic jams if he has way too many units, this happens if you do not engage for a long time or let him be

I find large land masses boring.
But it seems the computer opponent can be beaten easily when the map has much

Is the computer only really good on land masses?

The “goodness” of the AI is always on debate. For both EDIE and EDEE I would say a human should be able to beat it once they are practiced. However, the AI can be made much tougher with the handicaps allowed in the game.  I know to some this is not satisfying, because one may not like the concept of a handicapped AI, but it helps the challenge. I personally prefer production handicaps over combat, as I find combat unfair. In a waterworld I would definitely up the production HC so that you will have more water engagements – but often you are fighting against the infamous sniping DD.

In EDEE you have an additional means via adding to the computer’s number of starting cities. This helps him greatly. The computer does not cheat in EDEE. It does know a little bit more info that you do in EDIE – not much though. In EDIE I  believe (been a long time) that it knows how many cities are on a land  mass when it lands – does not know the location – but knows it should look for some. this aids exploration.

There is no substitute for PBM play vs a humanoid. ;>

The game setup I play the most against the AI in EDIE is all 5 AI players on a small map.  You get lots of variations depending on start positions and such.  I've lost plenty of these.  It's also a shorter game.

How small a map? I mean with 6 players it cannot be too small, right?

the AI can be made much tougher with the handicaps allowed in the game.  I know
to some this is not satisfying, because one may not like the concept of a
handicapped AI, but it helps the challenge. I personally prefer production
handicaps over combat, as I find combat unfair. In a waterworld I would
definitely up the production HC so that you will have more water engagements â€"
but often you are fighting against the infamous sniping DD.

EDIE I  believe (been a long time) that it knows how many cities are on a
land  mass when it lands â€" does not know the location â€" but knows it should
look for some. this aids exploration.

I play EDIE with 5 AI at +1 for both combat and production.  It can get busy.  Unless MOK has made vast improvements in EDEE, the AI is as dumb as a rock, building transports on an island that still has neutral or hostile cities.  The olny way to give it a chance is to overpopulate the map with "Bugs, thousands of bugs"

At 80x100 the random map generator usually puts players on an island with one city.  The AI often gets confused.  I've seen an AI with one transport doing exploration and 20 infantry sitting in the city.

At 100x150 you get more cities on the first island and the AI does better.  This is still small enough that you might have a couple of AI close to you, drawing expansion resources into battle or defense while another AI has unhampered expansion.

How small a map? I mean with 6 players it cannot be too small, right?

I play on a 56x75 map (because it fits nicely on my monitor without scrolling).  I've also seen AI players never get off their home island, but others explore well.  With 5 of them, there's usually one very close to my home island (and sometimes 3).

Try SoloMod which was tweaked for individual play vs computer opponents. Otherwise, you'll want to do email play vs. human opponents for a quality game. I never used it, since I rarely play vs the computer AI.
