I'm not sure.

As for the old Empire Deluxe, I haven't been able to get it running on Windows 7 (it ran without DOSBox on XP).  I haven't tried in a few months though and DOSBox may have been updated in the meantime.

I am not sure about EDIE, but EDEE works fine on Windows 7, so I would give it a high likelyhood.

I use it in Vista but I do have a few problems with icons disappearing sometimes.  Usually it's okay.

IDEE, on the other hand, is totally unreliable in Vista.

I have no idea if this says anything about these in Windows 7 but it's what I know.  I think when I get a Windows 7 machine I'm going to be sure to get or upgrade to Professional so it'll have the included XP which may solve such problems.

There's 2 of us looking for another 2 players - PBEM

Map size about 150 x 150 give or take, with a 2 to 3 city start, full blackout, so it will be a lengthy game.

We can agree/disagree on the map/scenario setup details later

With my own mod, SpeedMod (can send you the SpeedMod files and PDF, whether you join the fracas or not)
Basically, SpeedMod has been adjusted for faster production, longer movement for large maps:
i.e. Scout Sat moves 4; Armed Sat moves 3; missiles are stronger with improved rang; AT longer range, carries more, etc
Battleship strength improved with better barrage capabilities

Some units adjusted for terrain advantage/disadvantage in battle calculation
Almost everything that is capable of carrying other units has been modded - Transport carries 4 AR

New units added, recon drone, Attack Helicopter, MiniTransport (moves 3) MiniCarrier (moves 3), GunBoat/Minesweeper

The changes are detailed in the PDF

Hi

I tried EDEE and PGIE on the Win 7 RC1.

EDEE would play quite well for a while (several hundred turns) and then die.  It would not crash it just sat there in a pause mode..  Units would not take orders and the game just stopped.  I was pushing it with a max sized map and several hundred (yep hundred AI) to force it along.  I tried this several times gradually reducing the number of AI opponents.  All this did was change how long it lasted before it froze.  Still played well and a lot of fun while it lasted.

However I did get another game with 4 or 5 AI (no human players) to run a max map to the end. I have not tried it on a production copy of Win 7 yet.

I spoke to MOK and he felt it was probably easily fixed with a fresh compile under Win 7.

PGIE played perfectly under Win 7 (unlike me) I got murdered every time.

Cheers

A

Just define multiple players as "local"; I think the game will then
prompt each one in turn.

Just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone is interested. Empires of Steel
is available at Battlefront.com. Very nice graphics, easily moddable, lots of
options and a very good AI opponent. After following development for more than
a year I think this is the next great Empire game. A demo is available.

Windows 7 Professional has XP mode but you have to download it from Microsoft.  It doesn't come installed.  Actually if you get a computer with Win7 Pro it might but mine came with Win7 Home Premium and I did the anytime upgrade to Pro.

XP mode is really just Microsoft Virtual PC with an XP virtual computer installed.  It seems to work out well.  I used Virtual PC for DOS stuff on my Vista machine for a while and then switched to VirtualBox, which I liked a little better.  But since XP comes with this one I went with it.  They're both good

I installed the demo yesterday on a new laptop and it wouldn't run.  Very weird.  I double click the icon to run it and nothing happens.  I played around a little and gave up and uninstalled it.

My new laptop has 64 bit Windows 7 Pro so maybe that's why.  I don't know.

Looks interesting. Is it worth the money?

Looking at the demo.

Dos programs work fine in XP mode.  That's why I wanted it, too.

I suspect the reason they won't run otherwise isn't because it's windows 7 but because it's the 64 bit version.

If it has an XP mode, it is news to me.  I would be highly doubtful, as it will not run ANY DOS based programs, and XP will.

Suggestion: If you're handy with virtual machines at all (VMWare has a free version) you could load up a virtual PC with windows XP and be sailing.

Also I believe (anybody out there confirm?) that Windows 7 has an "XP" mode I've heard of.  I just got to Windows 7, so I'll be finding all this out first-hand.

I have win 7 x64 ultimate and it runs fine as is. Same with others. You might
like to post on their forum. The dev is quick to help.

Hi, I have been playing Empire deluxe for ages. I have the CD rom edition for
windows 3.1 in 1994. Has worked great in Windows 98, Xp and Vista. Alas, I have
just bought a newer computer and have not been able to get the game to install
in Windows 7. After many hours trying, I am lost. Does anyone have any
suggestions?

If you have Win7 Pro you an use the XP emulator to run Empire Deluxe.  It works fine on mine.  On my older laptop with Vista I used VirtualBox and that also worked fine.

I run EDIE on both of these laptops without the emulation but for the old versions the emulation is needed.  It's also needed for EDEE.  I wish they'd update that.
