Hey guys,

As several of you may know, I mentioned this in one of my status reports last year though did not name names.

I have entered into an agreement with Graphitti Entertainment (subsidiary of Signature Devices)
for a new version of Empire Deluxe. Here is their announcement.

If you had not read the status report, you can see it here:

Give that a read before asking questions. Thanks.

Yeah, I suspect the "RTS" comment as opposed to 'TBS' may have been an acronym mistake as far as I know...so don't read too much into that yet. I have asked for clarification and will pass it on. This is a pink sheet stock press release, not a game marketing release. So the emphasis is on it being "another SKU" for an investor versus what it is to a gamer.

Sounds great. Is now a good time to drag out my EDEE feature wish list
again? =)

FYI, I still have long term plans to use EDEE as an AI development
platform. Please don't abandon your policy of making the AI API public.

Yes! And yes to all the comments here. I've played Empire Deluxe for - wow -- decades now (I'm 69) and everything I seen about ED over the years is it ALWAYS gets better and better!
Thank you Mark. (I gotta start practicing play in 3-D!)

Congratulations Mark! I, too, hope that the "RTS" was a typo; part of what makes
Empire, Empire is the whole turn-based system. But a 3D-ification of the
graphics system would (in my humble opinion) definitely extended the game's
appeal to the younger generation who have been spoiled by the likes of MMORPGs
and first-person shooters. Seeing the game out in stores again, hopefully packed
with maps handpicked from the community, will surely bring a tear to my eye.

Perhaps with the next version, we might even see spherical maps? Units with full
360-degree precision of movement, unit locations reckoned by latitude &
longitude in squares* (rounded off to the nearest tenth square for simplicity
but calculated internally out to two or three decimal places). An interface like
that of World Wind or Google Earth, colored blips of units on or near the
surface, in glowing orbits circling the globe ... well, I should stop before I
get carried away. <grin>

As an aside, and I've never mentioned it before, but I've held a distant hope
that the word "deluxe" could be dropped from the name. The original Empire has
long since passed beyond the veil. Is there anyone who still plays the basic
game without bombers, armor, airbases, terrain effects on combat, or city
production efficiencies? So there is nothing for ED to be a "Deluxe" version of.
As far as I'm concerned, EDEE is what Empire was always meant to be, and the
original pre-ED Empire was an inferior version necessitated by contemporary
limitations in computing technology.

Again, congratulations Mark.

Actually, that is the only way I play the game and the reason that I
haven't moved up to EDEE. I don't have any problems running ED, using
standard and not advanced rules, under XP at all. I'm not sure what
the issue is for everyone else, but it runs flawlessly for me without
using any hacks at all. Literally install and run.

As far as I'm concerned, the game was perfect at that point. But then
again, I also played Empire when it was a text game on a mainframe at
school.

My father is also a 'play the game the way it was meant to be played'
type, standard game, and literally plays at least one game every day.
Even when he is ill or out of town, he has to get that one game in
via a laptop. Been that way for over 2 decades now. I wonder what
rank he's achieved in ED now. Now I have to check to satisfy my
curiosity. I remember, when ED shipped, calculating how many games
you'd have to win to achieve the highest ranking and thinking there's
now way that could happen.

I would be swayed to purchase the current EDEE version if I knew for
certain that it would be able to run in Interstel Empire mode without
me having to hack it to make it do so. Playing with AI files is
hacking as far as I'm concerned. If the default installation does not
include the options of playing the game how it was meant to be played
way back when, then it fails my requirement. Can anyone confirm to me
that I would be able to play the game like that without having to
touch a file? I would love to contribute to the current code-owner.

It could be done but you would have to modify the unitdb and the
script. And there is a learning curve to do that. That said, Killer
Bee Software sells EDIE which is identical to the original ED but
polished to be better plus it has internet play if you like that. It
has the standard game that you could play without any hack. Imo, the
ai is better than the original. You can download a demo at
www.killerbeesoftware.com. That would give you the opportunity of
upgrading your ED product and contributing to the current code-owner.

hmmm...i have mixed feeling on this subject whereas i feel MK
did an 200% EXCELLENT job of keep ED alive and keeping the flavor
of ED in EDIE and EDEE while making the new additions. I fear
that an outside group will be VERY lacking in keeping this new
version in the same flavor of ED that we all know and love. I
think it has a large chance of becoming something we won't even
recognize.

I'll continue my 110% support for ED/EDIE/EDEE but i don't think
i'll be able to support whatever this new version calls itself.

Have any of you seen www.GoCrossCampus.com ?

This is an interesting take on Risk.  Right now it's mostly restricted to persons with .edu email accounts since it began as a game where students fought over their own campus.  Teams were created by dorm and other residence affiliations.  However, they created a game for the US presidential candidates and used the states as territories.  The latest version uses The Office tv show's physical layout to create the "territories" and the teams are based on characters (e.g., Jim, Dwight, Pam, Ryan & Kelly) or departments (e.g., Warehouse, Sales, Corporate).

This is an interesting twist on Risk.  Teams must find their own leaders, but still decisions are made by each player for the armies they "own."  Each player gets 1 army per turn (plus bonuses for various actions or victories).  Each army is given placement and orders by their owner.  Teams must coordinate their attacks, defense, etc.

The nice thing is you only have to log in to issue your orders once every 12 hours (turns are real time every 2 hours).  It doesn't have to take up much time, unless you want to network, chat and persuade your teammates.   It is more than a simulation in that you don't just pretend to be in charge, you actually have to be in charge...fostering loyalty and making it clear why your strategy is valid so you persuade others.

I played a short while in the political game using my vt.edu alumnus account to register.

They are talking of expanding beyond .edu email accounts.

Just thought I would mention it.

BTW, if any of you can and do join, I'm on Ryan & Kelly's team (orange) in the GoCrosstheOffice game.

Further optimized for solo play.

Reduced production times (about in half), deleted the truck, plus many

I will convert my edie scenarios (about 300) and maps (about 200) to

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I might be able to fix
this problem I'm having.

I installed ED back about 2 years ago .. and late last year had a hard
drive that started to go bad on me. I backed up everything to an
external drive, replaced the main hard drive and now when Ive gone to
re install ED on the new drive, ... it's says its there but Ive been
getting an error as if not all the files were backed up etc

Anyone have any suggestions?

I know that EDEE has some registry settings that it uses. If you just
copied your files the missing settings might explain it.
