Skip sent me the following question:

Matthias sent out a large city.nam file to the Yahoo Group. Page 220 of the ED Strategy Guide says that the *.nam files can only handle 300 twenty-character entries (twelve-character for computer players). Is that still true? What if you used a list of over 1000 names?

When the Black City Bug  and long city name bug could not be traced, I had to rewrite the name code to change it so I could be confident it would not happen in EDIE. I increased the limit from 300 to 32500. I am sure sooner or later you might encounter some memory issues depending on your hardware available, but the number of acceptable names in a file have been increase...slightly.

I believe this is also good for all other name files as well. Sorry this is not listed as a 'feature'. Never thought about it, but now I guess I should have mentioned it somewhere.

ED Maps will not be too large until we get to the point where we can put
together an Earth map large enough so that the units are actually to scale.

Subject: EDIE Patch now available and "open" EDIE issues
mok_at_kille...
Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

EDIE has now been upgraded to version 3.513. It is available from http://killerbeesoftware.com

As Internet play has become more popular, some flaws in the way the network play is handled have appeared. Please remember that EDIE is based from the old source code, and there do seem to be some inherent flaws in the way human to human play is done and has been done from the beginning when ED was first built long ago.

There are a few issues that are considered "open", and these will remain so most likely indefinitely. These are issues revolve mostly around the restarting of a previously saved multiplayer game. It is known that the slave player on a restart will not have his last turn's recon report and combat report. It is also known that if a network game is not saved by the current active player, it is possible for the player who was active at the time of the save to have an opportunity to move units previously moved  on that turn after that turn on the restart of the game.

To avoid such problems, it is recommended that when a multiplayer network game is saved, it is done so by the Master player at the beginning of his turn.

These issues will remain 'open' because in order to repair them, fundamental changes must be done to the program itself, which are not feasible if not possible.

The issues encountered in ED and EDIE in this regard, will not occur in EDEE, because as most of you have read,  EDEE is a redesign of the entire architecture from the ground up, with multi-play and larger game capabilities in mind.

This in no way means I am stopping support of EDIE. I continue to solicit your experiences when something goes wrong in the game, and hope to get them fixed for you. Those of you that have reported issues to me know I try my best to get them fixed, even if they are minor. Sometimes things are hard to track down, and the more information you can give me, including saved games, the more productive I can be towards fixing them. My email is mok@... .

As always, anyone with questions or comments feel from to drop me a line.

Hi!

I played out an empire deluxe game against the AI for an aquaintance
to be able to test his expansion speed at Adv3 handicap. I am posting
this here on the assumption that some of you are interested in
checking out theirs. I am sure my expansion isn't perfect yet;
however, the recorded times are of my first attempt. I would love to
learn your times; if you send them to me by private email, I will
summarize to the list in a few days.

Testempo.svg tests your expansion speed. Use Empire Deluxe V3.11 or
3.12 to load (not EDIE).
It's a standard random map, 80x60,
played at Adv3 against 1 expert AI.
After turn 30, I had 11 cities.
After turn 36, I made contact with the AI; I had 23 cities.
After turn 40, I had 35 cities.
After turn 45, the AI resigned.
I held 50 cities and saw 81% of the map.

Re-zipped the large maps. Now all five che maps in 1 zip file;
"che maps.zip"

The maps are designed for 6-player (you and five computer opponents).
Very large (254x254) maps. Should provide many many hours of
exploration and conquest.

winky,

Sending a link to an empty site is a little ridiculous. Sending an email
addressed to all the names you can find from the group is STUPID. It will
get you ignored.

If and when you actually have anything would be the time to post it, with a
meaningful subject perhaps?

I recently created a 30x40 map in 3.11 format and then tried to
convert it into a mirror map using the mirror3 and Mark's mirror
utility posted here prior to the release of EDIE.

The batch files worked without any error in opening the map. But the
result was unusable, as the utility could not find ANY cities in the
original map. Thus the resulting mirror map also had zero cities.

Anyone have a tried and true method of obtaining mirror maps for
EDIE?

Zed,

The symmap program was a hack made many years ago without real
knowledge of exactly the correct file format. . It's amazing it works
for 3.11. Trying to convert the maps to EDIE will fail, for they are
not 100% correct.

However, EDIE has the symmetrical map featurs built into the editor.
SO its easy to make sym maps for EDIE. You in fact get a lot more
choices as to how you want the maps made. Check it out.

I wanted the same mirrored maps for ED 3.11 and EDIE for the tournament, but
I had the same problem. However, Spud sent me a map that converted just
fine, so there must be different versions of the mirror utility out there.
I solved the problem for myself by keeping the original 3.11 map before
mirroring it for 3.11, converting it to EDIE and then mirroring it again for
EDIE.

General Zeb and anyone else.

Let me know if you would like a copy of the mirror utility I used in the
example Arne is speaking about.

The only thing I can think of that may be special about it is it is the
version modified by General Error to make quadrant as well as north/south
and east/west mirrors.

I am not sure which version is posted to the yahoo groups site.

I did the same thing as Arne when I created a map for the tournament.

I created 10 maps with v3.12, mirrored them picked out the best one.
And then converted it to EDIE so the same map could be used by both
V3.1x and v3.5x players.

No problem.

Ever since I applied the latest MS parches for W2000, if I leave
EDv3.12 on my system, I notice that my system clock will slow down
about 30 minutes per day. If I run task manager, ED appears to be
consuming about 98% of my cpu clock time (866mhz Pent-III)

Is anyone else seeing this?

I'm certain this only happens if ED is present, irregardless of
whether or not I'm actively playing a game.

I never had a problem with my system clock before.

Its easy to show that ED is the cause.

If I leave ED v3.12 on the system, the next morning my clock will be
15 minutes slow. If I don't leave ED on my system, the clock is still
on time.

This was not a problem before I applied the latest patches. (having
left ED active and ready to play on machines for many years).

You may look back to the messages on this forum in May, a couple of users reported EDIE falling the clocks on Windows 98 boxes (I think). This was a known problem with Microsoft and I think atomic clock solutions were discussed in the thread. You might review it.

Of course, 2000 is not supposed to have that issue ;>

Why do I always think of Austria when I read your nick?

Hmmm, what do MinisculeSoft say about that?

> If I run task manager, ED appears to be
> consuming about 98% of my cpu clock time (866mhz Pent-III)

A simple workaround is to open "Player History"; this is a regular
windows form that doesn't consume much CPU and might not preempt the
clock as much. If in a game, open up Status Report or Information on
any tile. (Of course, that advice is sort of useless if you fall
asleep at the computer... ;)

I am running Win95 and use System Monitor to determine CPU usage; I
also have a radio-controlled clock sitting on my desk (and the
Windows task bar hidden).

Cheers
Michael

There is an Austrian firearms company called Steyr, named after a city

Well yes, thats the origon of my empire player name.

Actually the firearms company is no longer in the city of Steyr,
Austria.

Hopefully this won't result in any attacks on my domicile from

Hmm, gun owners often sound a bit paranoid.... ;)

I'm not interested in firearms...

"City in Austria" could be it.
http://www.steyr.at/

Also, there's this:

http://www.steyr-puch.de/ (click on "Fotos")
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~ppzcad/haf.html

Hmm, the Steyr logo looks as if it'd make a good ED map... ;)

Cheers

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you ...

Steve aka Ferretman aka Bunbury,

I AM out to get you, but I think I will let it wait until tomorrow since you
have probably gone to bed now anyway.

In the last few months, I get a 4 mm vertical line that appears
through the game down the left centre part of the screen. I play the
DOS version. I have not made any hardware or software changes to my
system and it seems to only affect empire deluxe. I can't play the
windows version. I've tested other old DOS games and nothing
happens. I've reinstalled the video drivers and run econfig several
times adjusting the settings. I run Win Me with an 8Mb ATI Rage AGP
video card. Has anyone run across this before or has any suggestions?
