EIA is basically the 'full' long winded (and more enjoyable) game - best played face to face.
EIH is a modified EIA to speed the process up (or was the last time I played EIH) designed to be played over the interet via a Cyberboard/AdC type map.
Both have their uses - if you don't have 6 other EIA players within a short drive, EIH will work alot better - however, if you do have 6 mad friends willing to spend about 200 hours playing a game face to face, EIA is the way to go!
EIH has also been updated, with some of the addition from Avalons Hills General - and further development has occured since then.
The one downside I found with EIH, was that as it was easier to set up and play - players felt no need to continue if they lost the first battle/war - and getting replacements gets difficult - OK - who wants Prussia - no army - owns 3 provinces and can't attack anyone for 35 months? Face to Face - the desire to play remained alot stronger!
Anyway, I haven't played either for 3 years plus and things may have changed....
