I wonder how many members actually still read this group, it has
something like 962 subscribers, how many still lurk and how many
subscribed address are to old e-mail accounts that people don't check?

I just got a message from the owner. Yahoo froze his accout two years ago
and they won't fix it. I am trying one last message to Yahoo, but if that
doesn't work, I will be redesigning the club. I will build a new one to
look much like this one, take all the files and working links and start to
move them into the new club. All will be invited as soon as that happens.

After much searching, I believe I found an active e-mail address of

member ownership so things can be set back in motion.

New members, hold on to your butts, hopefully you will be able to
post on this club soon.

Actualy, 3rd is the reason I finaly retired my 1st Edition game... which had run
for almost 15 years.

The Skills were better (but very similar... I had used a D12 varient) than my
house rules, the open character development (all multi/classing availible, but
ballanced) and the unique building features of feats swayed me.

I did re-incorperate my house Crit system... and tweaked a few things...
(Metamagic feats for instance) but that was just for my players game style...
the rules as presented are well thought out, and very playable.

Lesse, a quick summation while I wait on my dogs:
* They have added skills, much better then the nothing of 1st edition or
the Weapon/Non-Weapon proficiences of 2nd Edition.
* Feats, unique abilities, give an incredible ammount of custimization to
characters. No two characters need ever look alike. You could build 10
fighters, and each one could look completely different. To me, 1st edition
characters tended to look all alike.
* They have opened up the rules, kind of like "open source" software, so
third parties can make rulebooks, setting books, modules, etc. This allows
for more optional rules, more creative setting ideas, etc.
* This also allows D20 to be a truely "generic" system ala Gurps. There
are Modern rules, Call of Cthulu D20, Space and Supers rules systems
(Mutants and Masterminds is truely a work of art), Western settings, Horror,
Cyberpunk, and I am sure other settings I am neglecting.
* Liscensed properties. Like Babylon 5? Conan? Judge Dredd? Warcraft?
Everquest? All of these, and many more, have D20 worldbooks now.
* Much like the adjustment to Armor Class (always goes up), players dice
rolls are ALWAYS higher is better now. Much easier. Very little need to
ever reference a chart or table anymore. Shorter (in game time), faster,
more detailed combat turns without going to the Gurps extreme of one turn a
second. I love Gurps, but could never wrap my head around the one second
combat turn. Some great sourcebooks, though.

Ok, dogs are barking, back to bed.

There are also only 3 saves;

Fortitude = dealing with the body.
Reflex = your reflex ability.
Will = your ability to shrug off mental control and disbelieve illusions.

Well, to convert, at first it will make no sense at all, but as you get into
it, you'll see how it is way easier. The easiest example is the AC and to
hit. No more clumbsy "thac0." Instead, your AC goes up. Period. The
better your AC is, the higher the number. So you don't need any graphs or
tables, because all you need to roll to hit is the AC number itself. The
attack bonuses work pretty much the same, but if you want to hit an AC of,
say, 23, then you roll a d20, add the bonuses, and if it all adds up to a 23
or higher, you hit. A natural 20 on the die (nat 20) is a critical hit,
which is usually doubled, and some cases tripled.

There are some other things, but that is the biggest (and best, IMO) change.

How is it easier?

I really can't see how it can be easier than the original hardcover books?

I have played GURPS, Traveller, and Champions (hero) and can't say that ADnD
(or Dnd) for that matter is hard to learn/play.
