AIVAS screwed up. All Pern thought Thread was gone for good, well most did. The few skeptics were largely of the 'we should wait before rejoicing until we're absolutely certain...' Most of Pern simply went along its merry way, until the 16th day of the 9th month of the turn 2424, 157 years after the 9th pass had ended, thread returned.
By even the most skeptical estiments thread should not have returned for at least another 20-30 turns, but the reality was hard to deny, and the death toll climbed. Few dragon riders bothered to drill with firestone anymore, and the mines were seldom used. The dragon riders' deaths numbered nearly 400 of the roughly 1400 that Pern had left. The Holder casualties just kept climbing, rooves made of wood and thatch offered no protection. Houses built in the open afforded no protection. There was no warning, so those caught out and about in their daily lives were first to day.
The remaining riders consolodated to Delandri under Chantal, whose Gold Lyrrath had laid a phenominal 53 egg clutch only 2 sevendays before the disaster. Telgar out post's youngest gold survived, and was egg heavy. Monaco Weyrhold's eldest. Lyrrath's first clutch held 2 golds, but Jettath's did not, though it was a robust 23 eggs strong, several bronze. Pelicath, flew and was caught by a Brown of all things! But with so few golds the diversity was welcome.
Pern is in an unstable state. The holders are terrified, some plot to find ways of bringing their protection directly under their own control. Some are trying to find a way of fighting thread taht does not depend on dragonriders at all. Several groups of bandits, outlaws, and thugs are taking advantage of the situation while carefully hiding from thread under the protective wing of the dragons. Renegades flock to one side or another just to survive. The craft halls have their own agendas that have yet to be hinted at.
