On Sunday & Monday, January 4th & 5th, Bob & Maggie Martell will be
holding their 54th Amateur Dart Tournament.
This Winter event is to be held at the Sands Regency Casino/Hotel
in Reno, Nevada. The reason we chose Reno, is the ability to get
there in the winter. You can get there by Car,Bus,Train, or Plane,
from any where in the world.
In this years event, players will be allowed to have up to 50 ADO
points in 2007 or 2008. You can call to see if you qualify, or check
the American Darts Organization website for your Points. If you are a
Soft Tip player, you may not have won over $250.00 in a singles event.
You can download a flier at our website: www.tournamentdarts.homestead.com
This event is a round-robin format, in which you play 9 different
players, 3 games of 501. Your wins are totaled, and you will play in
the Championship Tournament, or the Consolation Tournament.
This is a PRE-REGISTERED tournament, and the entry includes your
room for Sunday and Monday, and your Tournament Play. The entry fee
has been kept low ( $220.00 ). This is a great way for budding Dart
Players to have the tournament experience, without being knocked out
in the First Round.

Hey everyone, Just wanted to let everyone know that the Greater
Trenton Dart League is hosting the 4th annual Darts for Dreams dart-a-
thon to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation of NJ. The 2009 event is
being help on March 7th, 2009 at VFW #3525 in Hamilton, NJ, from Noon
until we're done. Information can be found on the GTDL website under
the tournament link: http://www.njdarts.com/gtedl

Unlike a traditional event, this is not a bracket. Players pay $5 to

addition, we'll have door prizes, raffle items and a silent auction
thanks to the many local and regional sponsors that support our event.

For those of you in the NY/NJ/Philadelphia metro areas, we'd love to
have you come out and spend the day.

Thanks- Gary

You should contact either Terry Salgy or Bill Cady.  I've copied them on this e-mail and believe both are part of this group.  They certainly can give you the lowdown on the SVDA (Sacramento Valley Dart Association).  Also, they run the Camellia Classic, whhich is coming up soon, over President's Day Weekend.

Hi Herb-

check out www.svda.org they are the main league up in that area. Don't
know how far up they go, but it's a good place to start. They also host
the Camellia Classic the 2nd week in Fed (13-15 this year).

good luck,

THE EXTRAVAGANZA IS COMING BACK TO CLEVELAND!!!

The Cleveland Darter Club is proud to announce the return of the Cleveland Dart Extravaganza Dart Tournament on May 1-3, 2009 at the Cleveland Airport Marriott (4277 West 150th Street, Cleveland). After a 5-year hiatus, this will be the 32nd Extravaganza, with plans to carry on the tradition of this great tournament for many years to come!

The guaranteed payout will be over $10,000 and will kick off on Friday May 1 at 5:30 pm with our own Kleveland Killer event, and will continue throughout the weekend with three separate men's and women's singles events, 2 separate men's and women's doubles events, a mixed doubles event, a mixed triples event, and two blind draws, one on Friday night and one on Saturday night. Youth events are scheduled for Saturday and the ADO Youth Regional will be held on Sunday morning.

We are very happy to secure a fantastic venue for this event, and the Marriott is offering rooms at a very special rate of just $79 (plus taxes) . You can reserve a room by calling 216-252-5333. Make sure you ask for the Cleveland Darter Club darter rate when you call. The deadline for this special rate is April 10, 2009, but we recommend you book your room as soon as possible as availability is limited and we are expecting a great turnout.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a board, having their company link on The Cleveland Darter Club website and having advertisement in the program to be distributed at the event, please contact our Tournament Director, Rhonda Boyko at Extravaganza@... for additional information and details.

Keep updated on the latest news and announcements by visiting The Cleveland Darter Club webpage or by visiting, The Extravaganza Myspace Page.  Any questions can be directed to Rhonda at Extravaganza@....

Just wanted to send out a really big "Thank You" to all of you that made it out for the Capital City Classic and a super "THANK YOU" to all of those that set up and broke down the dart hall and to everyone that volunteered and helped out with all aspects of the tournament.
I felt that we really had a great time at the new venue and that those of us that were there did have some fun.  I hope that these times are getting better for those of you that could not make it.  I know that we all are having to make changes: tightening our belts, cutting back on things that we like to do and watching our pennies.  I do send out thoughts and prayers to all of you that you will have an easier time and that we will get to see you at the Freedom, in July.  Those of you that could not come for the 30th, know that your company was missed and hope that we see you in July.

Best regards,
Elaine

Fund Raiser appeal to help youth darts.....

hey Players, well the time has come for the PArkhill Youth Dart Team's annual Fundraiser dart tourney and Silent Auction. Last year we had great support from many different ppl and companies. We raised just under $900. for the day. The total funds went 100% to the youth league, in turn paid for the players trip to Youth Provincials in Belleville ontario (about 600 klm away). I had my head shaved this day which raised about $165 also... not bad for hair...lol..

This year we are sending 12 players to youth Provincials. We are planning another tourney in mid April. I already have some great items for the silent auction (which is where we make the $$.. since the tourney is 100% payout.)

So far we have shirts and darts coming from David Fatum, John PArt Shirts and a set of his darts. We have local items such as a few gift certificates.

We are looking to see if anyone else would be interested n donating ANYTHING to help out this cause. Dart Shirts, Sets of Darts, PAcks of flights, Cases.. anything that might bring in a few dollars for the youth league.

we have a web site up and running right now also if you would like to check it out, it has some profiles of some of the players, which is great reading.

http://www.geocities.com/parkhill_youth_darts/index.html

I also have NOT cut my hair since last may (last time it got shaved...lol), and will again be collecting $ to have it shaved again, Also Ringer (my son ) will be shaving his also... We have a hair stylist here that will be doing the cutting and we will take pics of the full events all day...IF anyone would like to donate to the Coach getting shaved again, please let me know.

heres to hoping some of the pros on here jump on board and suport... also, if you have contacts of some of the pros, please feel free to email them this message and hope they support!

FOr anything else, Please send me off an email. Remember this is for the Youth players. All funds goto the league.

Thanks and happy Darting
Rocky

Exhibitions may or may not help to promote the sport -- I say this becuase while they obviously would help with lots of media coverage, they don't really get any and thus aren't widely seen.

However, from a dart player perspective they are a great help! When I first attended an exhibition it was Bob Anderson back around '93 and from that I really got the bug to improve and compete.

....

I've seen this kind of thing myself. There are players in our league that look forward to seeing how much they have improved against Dennis Priestley since our last Priestley Exhibition...

TheCommandant wrote:

But really, it's tough to organize from the monetary sense here in the USA. It costs money, lots of money and US dart players are cheap (sorry, I've concluded this is true) and don't like to part with their cash. They will go for free, maybe even a few dollars (like 3) but ask them to pay $25 and they will balk and go drink $25 worth of beer instead and play a blind draw for $3 entry.

Yep, finding the right location for a reasonable price, or a venue that is willing to pick up a reasonable share of the cost can be a challenge. Not to mention that raffles are marginally profitable if the raffle prize items are not donated in return for advertising.

TheCommandant wrote:

Don't mean to sound cynical but I've been around the sport a long time and quite frankly I can't believe the lack of support in the sport -- people just don't want to spend a buck if they can help it.

Charis wrote:

I am still thinking about it, I would love it but how to get people interested? You can´t always offer Phil Taylor he might be even in Germany would attract some people.
So how organise an event, get people interested, don´t make to much loss, manage that everybody enjoys and wants to see some more?

And in the end: does it really help to promote the sport??? Is it worth all the trouble?

The best way to build interest is to talk about it non stop! Always find a way to work it into the conversation even with non dart players. We had several folks who were just curious come to our last two exhibitions. Also do everything you can to get information about the event into your local and regional news papers. TV and Radio Coverage would be good if you can get it.
How do you pay for it?
Try to get all of your league sponsors / venues to kick in some money to help pay for it (let them hang a poster or banner in return).

also give them a free picture (as a surprise gift)

Try to get a bunch of raffle prizes for free or minimal cost, and sell raffle tickets to any one who who will buy them (dart player or not).
How do you make it fun?
1. Make sure that you have TV's so that everyone can see what's going on.

2. Have a lot of raffle prize drawings...

3. Have a fun Master of Ceremonies...

4. Have a great Pro Dart Player!

All that being said our league (Ventura County Dart Assn - vcda.org) will again this year attempt to hold a Pro Darts exhibition featuring Dennis Priestley - June 25, 2009. Getting it organized will be time consuming, and there is always the fear that the league will lose our member's money (they love it when our schemes work out, but seconding guessing when the plans fail.)

So why do we do it?
I guess for the love of the game.

BTW we are always interested in hearing about ideas for making an exhibition fun, and pay for itself.

Also if any of you out there are interested in having an exhibition by Dennis you can contact him via his website: http://www.dennispriestley.com/, or EMAIL me your contact information to me and I will forward it to Dennis

Dart Talker,
My name is John O'Neill and I am a Philly shooter-I follow your site and emails and this one has my interest.
I do not think an exhibition would fly in the Philly area (ADO 5-3) There just is no interest outside those who play the sport (rather those who consider it a sport). We have two healthy leagues in Philly but we have a tough time promoting outside and within dart circles.  A teammate of mine, Bill Davis recently knocked-out the defending world champ John Part and while this was the lead story on UK's Sky Sport - there was nothing on ESPN or even in the local papers. (I send out Press Releases last year and this year but since the Philly paper ran a "local boy does good" story last year, they passed on it this year.  It is just not news- especially not sports news.
I have never understood "pro darts" as a former basketball player I never "paid to play" They paid me. They paid for college and they paid me after that, I stunk and I was better paid than the best US dart shooter ever was.
What to promote darts in the US?  Find national/regional and local sponsorships interested in reaching the dart world, those who" drink $25 worth of beer" at a shoot would be a start. Make it worthwhile for the better US players to go to tournaments-through national/regional and local sponsorships- Maybe if the prize money were $10,000 instead of $500 for a 501 singles championship at a Chesney type event, all the better players would show and the number in the field would no doubt increase. Gambling is a large part of the revenues in the UK but that won't happen here until the sport becomes bigger.  Attract the sponsors, they will attract the media.
I support all of the grassroots work that is being done, but really without outside money I don't hold out much hope for darts in the US growing beyond a pub sport.
Yours in darts,
John O'Neill

There just is no interest outside those who play the sport (rather
those who consider it a sport). We have two healthy leagues in Philly
but we have a tough time promoting outside and within dart circles.
A teammate of mine, Bill Davis recently knocked-out the defending
world champ John Part and while this was the lead story on UK's Sky
Sport - there was nothing on ESPN or even in the local papers. (I send
out Press Releases last year and this year but since the Philly paper
ran a "local boy does good" story last year, they passed on it this
year. Â It is just not news- especially not sports news.

me after that, I stunk and I was better paid than the best US dart
shooter ever was.

sponsorships interested in reaching the dart world, those who" Â drink
$25 worth of beer" at a shoot would be a start. Make it worthwhile for
the better US players to go to tournaments-through  national/regional
and local sponsorships- Maybe if the prize money were $10,000 instead
of $500 for a 501 singles championship at a Chesney type event, all
the better players would show and the number in the field would no
doubt increase. Gambling is a large part of the revenues in the UK but
that won't happen here until the sport becomes bigger. Â Attract the
sponsors, they will attract the media.

Hello John,
So much of what you say is true. For some reason most folks here in
the USA don't think of darts as anything more than a beer drinking
barroom game so getting taken seriously by sponsors can be a challenge.

I also feel your pain when it comes to the newspaper coverage
problem. All I can say is "keep the faith" and keep trying. Give those
papers a call and send them a press release every time something
notable happens. If you want help spreading the word on any of your
dart events just send me a copy of your fliers, press release or what
ever and I will post it / share it wherever I can.
