Last month, American Airlines announced a policy that will place a $15.00 fee on the first checked bag and $25.00 for a second checked bag. This fee applies to economy passengers and takes effect on June 15. This morning, I received an announcement from United Airlines with the same baggage fees, effective August 18. These fees do not apply if you have already purchased tickets for a flight after August 18. Expect other major carriers to follow suit.
For dart players going to ADO events, we do not have the option of carrying on our luggage, because the TSA will not allow darts through security. I would imagine that soft tip darts could get through, but who knows for sure.
The point here is that dart players traveling to a tournament are forced to check their darts and will not have the option of packing in such a way as to avoid this additional fee. Because of this new policy, dart players will constitute a specific class of passenger that is being penalized, arguably unfairly.
There is another potential consequence to this kind of policy. By being forced to pay an additional $30.00 that other passengers are able to avoid, we may find that attendance as tournaments will drop, which will also lead to the ultimate decline in payouts. There may be little impact in the Northeast, where players are often able to drive to many events over the course of the year. But, for those of us in the west, where driving is either not an option, or not a good option (especially with the price of gas now), we are forced to fly and will be forced to pay to take our darts with us.
I don't know this to be true, but I have heard that it is permissible to carry darts on a plane within the confines of Great Britain. I could find no news one way or the other. But, I do believe it is time that the ADO engage the Transportation Security Administration to discuss whether dart players traveling to tournaments, with suitable proof of the tournament (ADO Calendar, Tournament Flyer, etc.), be allowed to pack their darts in their carry on luggage.
I would welcome any comments on this from this group.
