I would be interested in your developments so if you upload them here,
I'll take a look.

DM Genie is being rewritten for 4E (long story) but the author is
planning to use an XML save format (or at least, an XML export format)
so it might be interesting to see what he comes up with, too. His
program is not open source, but if it will generate XML then then we
can always review the format being used.

That's not to say it will be the "best" or "most efficient", but it
couldn't hurt to see how someone else is laying them out...
