Hello all,
I have some pretty important questions.
Does anyone know why a game would load correctly, but you not be able to
connect? The port is correct, and everything else. Just keep getting
connection refused.
Does anyone know why a game would crash and die every time the server
restarted itself while your game was running? I have been having this
problem for years now and I am unsure what to do about it.
Game Platform: Tinymush 3.1 (I forget the patch level, game won't let me on
to check)
If you need any more information let me know...

Hello all,
I hope that someone has an answer for this.
For some reason for the second time recently my +review command suddenly
looses sent mail copies, from Sept. 9th to the 26th. It did this last month
too. I would
think that it would loose older +sent mail than newer +sent mail right?
Does anyone know how to fix this bug?

Hey guys, I'm a new coder on the block fresh off my classes and still
shakey with my memory allocation.
However - I work with a few different codes but I am particularly
interested in finding a MUD written in C++ that I can alter to my
whim. A lot of codes are hybrids or completely written in C in which
I can read, but it confuses me sometimes when I try to alter it. (I
know it sounds stupid but eh.. I'm a nub)
If any of you guys could email me with the name of a few MUD clients
that are COMPLETELY written in C++ and have already been debugged I'd
appreciate it.
One of the main purposes of this is that I am going to completely re-
code an existing MUD in my own fashion. This if course will take a
LONG time, but its something a friend and I would like to invest to
bring a "new" type of MUD to life. Well, at least one more unique
than many out there.
If any of you can help me out, I'd appreciate it. Thanks =)
If you look on darkoth.mudmagic.com or even just on
mudmagic....or even on the mudconnector at
www.mudconnect.com under resources...i believe it
tells you how.

Hello everyone, I have two things here I want to ask about.
First off, I have been trying to install Brandymail all last night. The
recommended unformatter amolitor_mush_unformatter either needs a special
server to run or something because I haven't been able to quite figure it out.
Now I know why I let someone else set up the first few things on my old
game. Too bad that person isn't around as much anymore. :(
Does anyone have a clean copy of this code that can be installed ? I keep
getting a feeling that when I tried MushWarehouse's unformatter that code
was missing cause it didn't seem to work after install.
If someone has experience setting up Brandymail please let me know as well.
------------------------------------------
On another note:
I need someone to help me set up my new game. I am good at most of the
behind the scenes stuff but coding isn't really my forte, though I am
trying to learn. The last game that I started, I had a friend help me that
is no longer around and I need some help. I know some coding, but even some
things like setting up BrandyMail escapes me.
This will be an original themed mush. I am slowly working on the news
files, but I need to get the beginnings of code hooked into my game before
I can get much further.
This project would be perfect for someone that wants to set up a game with
all the basics and then move on to another project for awhile before coming
back before the game opens to do additional coding projects. Or if someone
just wants to help me set it up and not come back, then that is ok too.
I have some basics already installed like Myrddin's Global BBS, and some
globals that need help setting up properly. I need a good +help system that
is easy to add to, help to make my +finger code work properly, an Age code,
and other things.
If this coder would be willing to help teach me to code, I would appreciate
that too. I am always willing to learn :)
Thanks in advance. Please reply privately if you want to help me. :)

I depends on what codebase you're looking at using. I know of a few
tutorials that may or may not help.
Amberyl's MUSH Manual - http://www.godlike.com/mushman/
and other places.
The 101 Schoolhouse at M*U*S*H - http://mush101.elsemu.net/
Moe's Mushkode Manual - http://chicago.demoe.com/mmm/
I'm interested in a command (or edit of the look command) that would
allow a player to in affect look at another character in the room
using a name saved on an attribute of the character being looked at.
If that makes any sense at all.
I HAD one working at one point, but the game it was on went down and
I lost it. *cries*
It doesn't need to be a hardcode hack. I'd actually prefer a softcode
version. IE: '+look bob' would look at a character with the ATTR set
to bob.
I'm running on TinyMUSH 3.0.4
Anyone have any ideas?
Heya Nate,
In response to your question about Cgywin and Windows, yes. Start the MU*,
and when you open the client, type 'localhost' for the host name and whatever
port you decide to use.
Gotta go :)

Ok, I got the codebase I want to use. Now for the question everyone
will probably love me for. I'm using Windows and Cygwin. Is there
anyway I can host a mud on my computer then connect to it from the
same computer to make sure everything runs the way I want?
Im trying to find a snippet of code to implement ranged weapons on rom 2.4. I
know Ive seen it but can't locate it anywhere. If anyone could send me to the
right place or happens to have I would be very grateful to be able to find
it.

The problem is that so many people have so little usefulness to say...
or at least that's been my experience when I was just starting out
some sixteen years ago (yes, I hear you in back... they did have
computers back then.) There have been a number of book on the
subject, which are a
stand-up-walk-into-the-office-find-the-book's-titles-remember-them-and
-the-isbns-and-return-here-to-regurgate-them-back away, and frankly
that's just to far while my brain is processing Fear & Loathing in Las
Vegas (trippy).
It turns out to be a couple of hour (of days if you aren't good at it)
long search of google and dogpile and various other search engies to
skim through sites that do and don't have anything helpful to say on
the topic (and let us not forget that by using MUX, like D&D, will
corrupt the soul and send us to hell) before moving onto the next
topic. Without getting paid for it, such a job wouldn't be worth it
-- trust me, I know.
So, while the flavour (damn Canadians) of my text says, 'It's
hopeless, so give up', try not to let that discourage you. It may
take awhile, but the information you do manage to find you will hold
dear to your heart like a toothless gold miner and eight ounces of
gold dust.
> Also, can you make a Mux run through IRC?
Yes. How helpful was that? I know, not very. Thing is, I've seen it
done but for the life of me can't remember where it was. But on one
list or another, someone posted a bot (if you know what that means)
that does that very thing. I don't know what the bot did, I think it
only ran the simplest of commands (WHO and page or the like) but it
was done. Something like MudNet I suspect (another bot, which is at
MudNet.org, I believe).
So, in conclusion, if you take nothing away from this mindless
dribble, just remember that I've had far to little sleep and far to
many twelve hour shifts and my advice may not or may not be valid.
Follow at your own peril.
P.S.: I blame the ozone layer for my typographical and just plain poor
spelling. Save the rain forest. Hug a whale.

Yes, if someone could pound out some "beginner

that would be Very helpful.

Greetings everyone.
I know it's getting old, but I need a coder as well.
I'm searching for mux coders to add to my team. We
have chargen sorta done (on of my staff members has
agreed to get it working) and several basic globals.
We need WoD specific commands. Knowledge of WoD isn't
necessary, but for those of you who are in the know,
and are curious, it's to be a Dark Ages Mush.
Here's the Nitty Gritty of our system:
Tiny MUX 2.3.3.20 with the Realms code installed
(which we don't know how to use yet).
Drop me a line if you're intersted.

Hey there Trace,
The important thing to decide first is whether or not you want to make
everything yourself. If you do, then look forward to a very rocky path,
but one with great rewards (apologies for sounding like a mystic). I
don't recommend C - you'll have enough on your plate without memory
management and function pointers. It sounds like you have very little
programming experience, so I strongly recommend something like Python -
a very easy language to learn, comparatively. Bear in mind that many
things will already have been done - things like managing connections.
You can make use of this by using publically available libraries. Be
sure to check that the license is OK for you to use - anything under the
LGPL is good pretty much anywhere, whereas anything under the GPL can
only be used by making your code open source. Try writing a few little
toy programs before starting on a big project like a new codebase in a
language that's never been used for a MUD before.
If you want to program on a preexisting MUD, there are a lot of
different codebases to use. What sort of MUD do you want to have? Lots
of people on here seem to like coding for adventure style
hack-n-slashers - I like MOOs (these are very easy indeed to code for,
as everyone can do it). Lots of MUDs use C - you may want to try that.
William Pascoe mentioned using Cygwin. That's ok, but you need to know
what you're doing - and when your MUD is ready for the world to see,
chances are it'll be running on a Linux box. You're probably going to
end up installing Linux at some point. Don't be afraid.
If you want to code on someone _else's_ MUD, then do the toy projects -
a program that prints "Hello World!", a program that you can control
with your input, a program that connects to a chat network like MSN
using someone else's library are some examples. Then approach whoever
you want to work with and tell him you're willing to learn.
In short, you have to go from being a newbie to being comfortable with
reading someone else's code, understanding it and then making it better.
Not easy.
Or you could install Visual Basic v6.
Nathan (a lurker)
Any links that you need, feel free to mail me. Otherwise, Google is your
friend.
I really do recommend Python.
Windows -- >
1. Get Microsoft visual C++ 6.0 {this will allow you
to compile , and write code}
2. The store :)
3. Buy the MSV 6.0 book , or use there online library
{free} This will help you nail down errors and nasty
stuff like that.
4. Depends on your mud , what code base you want to
run. There are bases from everything java to C.
5. Depends on the code base . Circle is C for example
, where Javamud is well Java :)
6. Read the code base instructions , I code on
cirlemud for example and there is a extensive file on
how to compile it.

Cygwin would probably be your best bet. Ensure that
includes the "make" function. You will have to add it
to the download package the website tells you how.

Cygwim.com

A book on the type of code that you want to learn

C is the most popular but there are some writtem in
java and even heard of visual basic.

Well you download what type of codebase you want to
run. I only know about circle so I cant say for the
rest but they usually come with a basic set of startup
instructions.

Hello, I just joined this group and I have a couple of questions
about coding. Actually I have alot but they'll come in time. I want
to get into coding, but I'm new to it, TOTALLY. It would appear that
I got up one day and said "Hey let's start coding for MUDS", and here
I am now. Anywayz, first off.
1.) What software do I need? (I'm running this on Windows)
2.) Where can I get the software?
3.) Is there an online site that has a "How to Code" on it? (I know
that questions gonna sound retarded)
4.) If not, what information do I need to read up on to learn about
coding.
5.) Is MUD coding in JAVA script, HTML, or what. I haven't the
faintest.
6.) If all of this is possible, how do I put the software together to
start the coding process? (Theoreticly saying I know how to code
already...not!)
That's all for now. Plz, help me out. A person has to start
somewhere. So if you help out, thanks alot. It'd be much appreciated.
