Ok...we saw this before. Save the third comic, and change the color of
the last color in the palette to red (or some color other than white).
You get the URL: http://www.rockwoodcomic.com/secretpage.html

It occurs to me that there is still one puzzle left to be solved on
http://www.rockwoodcomic.com/salla.html : The one dated
Wednesday, May 23rd, and represented by a painting of the
Golden Mean and the Anti-Robot Militia t-shirt. I've already tried to
brute force a couple of URLs based on these hints, but as yet to
no avail...

For another hint about what that new project involves for some of our
beloved PMs, here's an update from our favorite author's website:

December 2001:

A Very Busy Year

The A.I.Web Game--a.k.a. THE BEAST

In the late summer of 2000 I got entangled with the extraordinary
visionary/entrepeneur Jordan Weisman, who asked me to work with him
and a smart young fella' named Elan Lee at Microsoft on a truly eye-
popping project loosely related to Steven Spielberg's film A.I., in
which we were promised a chance to pioneer a new way of telling
stories.

We didn't actually get to make that one. Happily, Jordan is never
short of ideas, so we got together a few months later to build a
different world-changing new artform (or so we hoped). We met with
Pete Fenlon, and some more Microsoft folks on January 4th, 2001 with
the aim of creating a miniature world on the web--a rabbit hole into
the year 2142, where we would create an ongoing interactive
narrative. The sites first went live on March 8th, but only truly
broke into the public consciousness with the online release of the
movie trailer.

That was the beginning of what Internet Life magazine called "The
Citizen Kane of online entertainment." Those interested in finding
out more about this project might try www.cloudmakers.org, --the
definitive compilation of game-related materials, including
interviews and media commentary.

As of this moment, Elan and I are hard at work with a commando team
of other talented people, attempting to breathe life into another one
of Jordan's visions; one considerably more revolutionary than the
Beast. It's incredibly exhilirating to work on these projects. As
rewarding novel-writing can be, no job is quite as satisfying, at the
end of the day, as Shadowy Mastermind. I recommend it to anyone who
gets a chance.

The Sunburst Award

This marked the inaugural year for the Sunburst Award, a juried award
for Canadian literature of the fantastic which I was pleasantly
surprised to win for my novel Galveston

The World Fantasy Award

Lastly, I was extremely honored to share the 2000 World Fantasy Award
for novel-length work; Galveston tied with Tim Powers' Declare.
Cadaverous busts of HP Lovecraft must be huddled across Tim's
mentelpiece like crows on a telephone wire by now. Taken singly, the
statuette is alarming enough; a row of them has to be extremely
striking...

One happy consequence of the award is that Ace will be publishing a
mass market edition of Galveston in April 2002.

This post-Christmas offering looks like a decent purchase

All proceeds to the 9/11 charities.

Post-Christmas pricing. 15" version, too.

All proceeds to the 9/11 Children's Fund. This is a 100% needs based
charity.

Buy two. Apart from long-range investment, your great-great-
grandchildren might need one to placate the Lord High Robot.

I just found this great site called the Internet Archive Wayback
Machine where you can search for old web sites that they have
archived from the past several years.

So, I searched for some of the A.I. Game Web Sites and found that
many of them have been archived on their site. And they have
archived different versions of the web sites as they changed
throughout the year.

Some examples:

Wow. That is about the coolest thing I've seen since the Beast ended.
If anyone isn't already actively archiving The Beast on their own,
here is a link to contact the Internet Archive Wayback Machine owners
about the donation of any collected Beast sites to the archive.

In trying to archive all of the Beast Web Sites, I have realized that I am
missing most of the original Loki Hack Flash Movies. For some reason, the only
two that I saved are from www.cliniquedelille-fr.dk and www.elizas-tearoom.net,
and of course none of the Loki hacks are online any longer. If anyone else
saved any of the other Loki hack movies, I would love to get copies of them.
And yes, I realize they are all but identical except for the beginning screens,
but I am trying to archive everything for completeness sake.

If anyone can help me out, I will send you a complete copy of all of the Beast
Web Sites on a CDR.

Thanks in advance!

For the love of... I'm reasonably certain this was in the FAQ
everyone signing onto the lsit was supposed to read. If not, it
should've been. We've had to explain this to people SO MANY times.

Mr. Mel A. We can't. It's a mailing list, which you're signed up for.
If you want off, you have to come remove yourself from the list or
change your options so that you don't receive mail. We'd love to
help, but we don't have any control over it. Have a good one.

While I'm posting, is there any way for me to get a copy of just one
of the loki videos from someone? Which one isn't important, but I
spent a while trying to explain the Game to some friends a few weeks
back. One of the hardest things to explain was how real and
enthralling it was, and one of the best tools I had was the four
evilly ominous warnings on jeanninesalla.com that pop up randomly with
the scary sounds. A loki video would be even better.

This subject has come up enough times, same with the phone number thing.
Removing yourself from the mail list or changing your preferences not to
receive mail work wonders, while requesting, however politely, that we stop
mailing will NOT work. Simple concept to understand.

And if this isn't in the FAQ, then it should be :)

There are a few sites missing that I'm still convering (see below).

All the game sites and puzzles should function exactly as they do on the
real sites.. if anyone notices any problems drop me an e-mail :)

Obviously this page can't stay up forever, it'd cost me too much. Once i'm
satisfied it's all workig I'll probably burn it onto CD.

You are correct... The Beast sites are still up, for whatever
mysterious reason you rabid SPECCers wish to add.

Look at my message 45554, among others. There are cheaper places to
get the toy. They have them for sale and auction on Ebay, and the
Target website (at one point) had them on special for $18! This place
below wants $175, which is just kind of silly.

Probably because it's not really a game. ;)

I too have created an archive, in fact I finished it last August.
I changed all the links to work within the archive, created client
side JavaScript to simulate server side password protection (so the
web sites in the archive work EXACTLY like the original ones with the
exception of Sophia who just opens the emo-grid, and Eliza which I
changed with new puzzles).

And, yes, I also archived the videos, converting the streaming videos
to WMA files. They are 3 to 5 MB big, and I could send them, but I
got them easily enough using a program called ASFRecorder (version
1.1, available free on the internet). Start ASFRecorder and paste the
shortcut link under "Open URL..."

The links are:
http://www.familiasalla-es.ro/credits/cornbread/griffin_1_300.asx
http://www.martinswinton.com/videophile/election_night_2_300.asx
http://www.katenei.com/videophile/v1c300.asx
http://www.downandoutcafe.net/videophile/tribunal_300.asx

You do not have to have a true DSL or Cable Modem connection to do
this, the program makes the video server "think" you can stream that
fast. The result is a WMA file that can be played in windows media
player.

P.S. If you have ANY loki files, post them to the rest of the group,
none are posted here, and many requests have been made for them!

I just finished Sean's novel "The Night Watch," and I have to say I'm quite
impressed.

I expected a good story... after all, this is the guy who told one of the
best online stories last summer. But I got more than I expected. Most
"genre" fiction is pretty limited in the sense of literary style. Let's
face it, your average science fiction/fantasy/horror/thriller novel may be
entertaining, even meaningful, but rarely stands out as a craft of language
and structure.

Don't get me wrong, Stephen King is one of my favorite writers, and he tells
a great story. And in his recent work, he's definitely developing more of a
literary style, a love for the language that shows through. It's something
that goes beyond just a good story. King's always been a good storyteller,
but only recently (in the past five years or so) would I also say that he
has become a better *writer*.

In "The Night Watch" I was pleased to find both a good story and an
excellent example of literary craft. Some passages of the novel read like
poetry, with a cadence and a cunning use of language that somehow moves the
story along at the same time as it makes the reader pause and admire.
Chapter 12 was one part in particular, in which the bodyguard Jen is
practicing his martial arts moves to distract himself and trying not to
attract the attention of a local demon, and as he goes through his moves he
remembers his past. The end of this chapter is both beautiful and deeply
disturbing. This chapter by itself makes the book worth reading, to me. It
is one of the best examples of Sean's excellent use of language, but there
are many others throughout the book.

It was fun, too, seeing the seeds of the AI's from the Beast creeping up in
the "familiars" some of the characters wore in "The Night Watch." Reading
through those parts, it was easy to see why Sean was chosen for the Beast.
He's done this sort of thing before... sort of.

I loved seeing how magic and technology were incorporated in the book, too,
and how they sort of became one and the same in some instances. It reminded
me of Tim Hunter's experience in the far future of Gaiman's original "Books
of Magic" miniseries, in which magic and technology have become so
intertwined as to become indistinguishable. I remember something along the
lines of "computers made up of a net of spells." Think also of Arthur C.
Clarke's line: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable
from magic." Sean's idea of combining the two may not be completely new,
but he carries it off very well. Better than most, I would say.

I won't gush too much and I don't want to completely ruin the story for
everyone else (and it IS a good story, surprise, surprise), but I'll just
say that I'd be willing to bet everyone here would enjoy reading "The Night
Watch." You already know you like Sean's work, and this book is an
excellent example of why. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
