Hi all, I am new and I am having a problem getting my Civilization III
Gold Edition to play. It loaded fine and I didn't get any error
messages. It just won't play. Can anyone help me please?

You must use Disk 1 to play all three games. I'd make a shortcut to each
of the three games, if I were you.

I am running Conquests under Vista, it took a little work.  On your desktop shortcut for the game, go into the properties and go to the compatibility tab.  Turn on compatibility mode and set it for XP SP2.  In the privilege level tell it to run the program as an administrator.

For some reason that did not work, I just keep getting that message
every 60 seconds, and stays there for like 20 seconds. A real pain in
the backside while trying to play the game.

Oz, you absolutely MUST have the MANUAL that came with the game to play it. Seriously.

I remember going through the same thing years back with the very first version of Civ. (smile) My sister and I were going nuts trying to reason it all out.

Check this link:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&_trksid=m37&satitle=civilization+III+manual&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=97217&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=32%26fsoo%3D2&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=

I'd suggest trying eBay or Amazon -- you can get it cheap there.

Frankly, we've also got the HINT book for Civ III. But you can locate loads of that stuff online...

(We're not spring chickens, either. But Civ is a great game for all ages...)

Good luck!

There is a manual folder on your CIV3 CD. That folder contains the
instructions. Just right-click the game icon and choose "Explore". Then
right-click & "Explore" the manual folder. You should also have a
Tutorial option when playing. Soon, you'll tell your grandkids how well
you conquered.

Shields come from mining the countryside, wealth comes from roads, marketplaces, banks.  Defend is to guard your cities, etc.  Produce a military unit, warrior, spearmen, etc and fortify them in your cities.  You may also want to station military units on your special resources like saltpeter, iron, etc.  This is especially beneficial in the early game to keep the barbarians from pillaging the resource.

Any ideas?

Easiest way is to just rename them one at a time as you settle.
Otherwise go to CIVIII editor (or PTW or Conquests), create a scenario
name, enter the editors custom settings, go to Civiizations, find
yours, highlight the city names, delete them and type your new names.
If you leave everything else alone you will still retain your basic
game. You might however go to the map, select your country from the
toolbar, and place your own starting location on some of the better
real estate.

It is easier to plant a spy if you are a Communist civilization. That
being said, a Democracy can plant a spy, if it waits a few turns to do
so. The most useful thing a spy can do is show the location of the other
country's forces.
