220 young chessplayers braved the icy roads to compete in the Whatcom County Scholastic Chess Championships held Saturday, January 15 at the Northwest Washington Fairgrounds in Lynden.
This year's competition was different in two aspects. First, the site was moved from the Lynden High School cafeteria to the fairgrounds, which made for a more spacious venue with two distinct playing sections, one for the tournament, another for relaxation, socializing and "bughouse" chess. Second, the tournament's significance as a qualifier for State was increased, as for the first time the State Championships will be held in Northwest Washington this Spring.
The Whatcom County Scholastic Championships were rated by the Washington High School Chess Association. The scoring system gives one point for a win, zero points for a loss, and one half point for a draw. Ties are broken by the "Solkoff" method, which judges which players played the toughest opponents.
Without volunteers, we wouldn't have a tournament. Many thanks to the volunteer registration team of Jeanne Petersen, Tami Blankers, Zach Blankers and Brady Root. And big thanks to the volunteer floor judges Dave Mauro, Brian Weese, Allen VanderVeen, Eric Graham and Ricardo Garza.
