Hi Chris,

Those are some good choices, particularly the Rise of
the Roman Republic. I also have the Carthage game
which I have heard takes care of many of the original
rules problem. Maybe the standard rules are
downloadable as living rules.

Right now I'm not sure what I am doing on Friday at
the moment.

Happy New Year!

Mark

I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2006!

I am wondering what games people are up for this Friday. On the
lighter side, I'd be up for a game of Attack! or Twilight Imperium
III. For more serious games, I am wondering if anyone still plays any
of the old Gamers Tactical Combat series or Civil War Brigade series.
I am thinking that there'd probably be time to play a smaller
scenario. I also finally clipped my counters for Rise of the Roman
Republic (2 years after release) and would be up for that but haven't
got the rules 100% down, so I'd probably need to find someone who's
played it before.

Of course I am also open to any other suggestions. It would be nice to
line something up in advance so that those involved can get a rules
refresher prior to the game.

As many of you know we arrived on Friday evening and we couldn't get
in. The contractor for them changed the side door we use and never
gave the key to even the chief... So we were locked out. Had a nice
turn out and few folks showed up who I haven't seen in years,
particularly Norm and Norm. We ended up leaving early.

I spoke to the fire superintendent on Monday and he'll give me the
keys for the door on Friday January 6th- so we are back in!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year guys!

Best,

As a suggestion when you reply to the mail, unless you
need to quote or reference something specifically, I
found that we are bringing in the entire prior group
of prior messages-repeatedly- so if you can- delete
the material you don't need in your reply.

See you guys there on Friday Evening!

Ken just contacted me and said his emails are bouncing for the Group at the
moment. He'll be there on Friday night, and looks forward to pizza. Of
course, we may want multiple pies, and he'll be contributing.

He and I are going to kick around Panzer Grenadier.

Rich and I wound up tying for the lead in the AGoT game but Ken and
Asa were both extremely close as well. I'd love to try it with 5 or
6 and the expansion rules some time.

Hi,

Windsor Pizza is good- less than a mile to the North
of the Club- on right in an a building formerly a
McDonalds. I had some of their Pizza in the past and
it was pretty good. Artie, Greg and Luis can attest.

I think by Friday evening the inclement weather should
be past us, I hope!

Me and Victor are going to try to get through a few
turn of the Compass Game, Red Storm over the Reich. I
have a new map and playtest counters from the games
developer, Bill Cooper- nice for playtest materials...

Mark

If anyone else wants to chip in I'll order a pepperoni pizza when I

Add Flattop to this list. I also "well versed" in most of the old AH
games, and recently Sword of Rome. Mark and I kicked around
Panzerblitz recently and found we much enjoyed a game from our Yoot.

I love all things navy, and the Pacific War is my favorite. BTW,
Victor and Mark- I wanna learn Fire in the Sky, too, so count me in.

RE: Pizza. I know that place near Windsor Donuts in the middle of
Windsor on Rt. 159 is fairly good. Take out only. There is a couple
of places near there, too. I think Mark and Ken have been to that one
a block up the street from the club, and found it acceptable.

Hi Guys-

I'll see if I can think of some neat-to-eat treat for Friday. I'll
also have my usual stuff in the car- Memoir 44, Liberty, and Panzer
Grenadier. Anybody up for quick move Europa? Just kidding. But I do
love Europa, and I'm getting a game room set up in my basement for
such a venture.

Here's my comprehensive game list:

Western Desert (Europa)
All Second World War at Sea series
All Great War at Sea series
All Panzer Grenadier except 2005 releases
All Command at Sea
Prestags
Strat-O-Matic Baseball
Close Action
Caesar: The Civil War
Britain Stands Alone
Crisis: Sinai
Desert Victory
Bismarck
Submarine
Advanced Squad Leader
Lee Takes Command
Nuclear Proliferation
Empire in Arms
Breakout: Normandy
This Accursed Civil War

That's it for now!

Hi Victor,

Thanks for the follow up on the game. I think it's pretty good. I kind
of suspected how Adam would respond. Pacific wargames are devilishly
difficult to figure what to do in terms of the game system. It's hard
to translate what you have in mind and transfer that into a plan and
strategy on the game table.

Once the Japanese start to have reduced resources the American will
have freer reign, followed by more forces, I can forsee the Japanese
having a tough time of it. I understand playing the American at Pearl
your focus is trying to salvage something of your fleet. I kind of
feel that it is a throwaway fleet which will be replaced by one more
capable.

I definately want to play Fire in the Sky more- I think it could- with
some experience be a great game for the club environment.

Thanks for the post Victor!

As noted Mark and I played a short couple of turns of MMP's Fire in
the Sky at the last gathering of game fanatics. Mark wiped out the
American Fleet at Pearl - although the loses being all the
Battleships only one was actually sunk, the rest returning from
damage over the next 6 turns. Then the Japs wipped out the British
Fleet in Singapore - these were sunk to the bottom of the bay.
Onward to the Phillipines where the American Army held out for two
turns before marching off to the death camps. The second combat is
where we ran into some rules confusion. That being what happens to
Air Points that are lost to AA fire. The Americans fired four AA
factors scoring 3 hits on the Imperial Japanese Airforce! Then we
wondered if the air units suffered step loses - the rules not being
clear about when air points are actually eliminated (considering
each one lost also takes a Jap Merchantan with it) damned important
the rules be known aye... I posted on Consimworld and the man
himself Adam Starkweather responded as follows:

"Hey Victor,

There is a difference between Air Points (the thing you add up from
your air steps and CVs and place on the battleboard) and Air Steps
(the actual counter on the map). They are not the same thing.

In air to air combat or from flak, you only lose air points - not
air steps...you can only kill air steps by bombing them with Air
Points, by sinking them when they are at sea (moving operationally
in TFs), by taking an opponent's base with enemy air steps still
there, or by disbanding them...those are the only way the counters
(Air Steps) are flipped or lost...the loss of Air Points is only
temporary and are not permanent losses.

Think of the Air Points as the planes themselves (easily replaced in
a 3 month turn) and Air Steps as all the trappings that go with
planes (the base, the servicing, the fuel, the HQs, the
communications, etc.).

So in your example...

During the Anti-Air Pahse the US got lucky and rolled 3 hits on the
Japanese leaving them with one Airpoint to apply to the ground
combat. Now my question - do the Japanese lose 3 factors of the 8
Air factors (4 Airpoints due to being Long Range)? When does Air
suffer actual step reductions?

The air steps on Formosa are not effected at all....the number of
air points is reduced so there is less to attack with...so the
Japanese have 4 air points (from the 8 Air Steps at Formosa) and the
US got 3 of them. The Japanese have only 1 to air strike with...but
the Air Steps that provided these Air Points are not effected at
all.

You proably want to get the Q and A above, the example of play
above, or maybe give the Living Rules a read. This is in there.

Adam"

So there it is - Air Points are quite versatile in this game.

This is a really neat and deceptively complicated game. Rather than
the 1000+ counters and half a dozen maps of War in the Pacific or
even VG's Pacific War this one mapper with a hundred counters
presents an accurate simulation of the Pacific War that can be
played in 6 hours or so.

I look forward to playing this artful game again and hope to master
its complex system.

One last observation - The Japanese have a significant combat force
at the beginning of the game. As the Americans I couldn't see how
they could be stopped other than the one weakness they have - Oil!
Kill thier airpoints, infantry and merchantmen. Each one lost is
less Oil to run that monstrous combat machine.

Mark,
Any date yet for the release of Silent War? Compass Games web-site
just has that you can pre-order it, but no other details. I did enjoy
it since I did sink the Japanese carrier in my first test game. I do
plan to buy a copy but just want to see when can I expect to be able
to get it???

I think that maybe bring something along with you-
nothing really that big- so we all can have say chips,
cookies or salsa or whatever... bring what you want.
Craig when he shows up brings things- I guess we can
follow his lead.

Best,

Mark

Hi Guys,

Please pass the word about the list and start
posting... People need to get some discussions going
to make this useful to members and to get more people
playing games.

Time to start setting up potential games for the next
meeting at 6:30 PM on December 16 at the firehouse.

Directions to the club will be posted soon in the
group section of yahoo and an email to members so they
can pass it along to any gaming friends who may be
interested in visiting.

Being the December 16 meeting is the last of the year
and Christmas is around the corner do any of you guys
want to bring some snacks and sodas to share?

Craig usually brings things to eat- it might be nice
for us to do the same if you can.

Good Gaming!

Mark

At the last meeting 3 games were played before I left, they were:

Ken, Chris, Asa and Rich played A Game of Thrones- looked real cool...
who won?

Greg, Luis, Jacob and Artie played the Lord of the Rings collectable
card game, who won?

Mark and Victor played Fire in the Sky- to learn the game- not a hard
game and seems quite fun once we got the hang of it. Definately want
to give it another go after reading the rules so the game concepts
become cemented.

Good Gaming!

Mark
