Dan:

If you should need ChessBase software, check out
GST-free CB software at www.northshorechess.com (Chess
First! Enterprises, N.Vancouver, BC). I supplied the
ACA with DGT XL clocks; I only charge the BC PST and
my prices are lower than the CFC.

See you at the Keres Open or Canadian Open. We played
in the Western Canadian Open together.

Cheers,
Vas

It came down to three games. In Round 4, Micah Hughey drew with
Chris Kuczaj giving Micah a half-point lead over Chris, Sean Perron
and Andrew Boik going into the last round. In Round 5, Chris won the
exchange against Sean and later the game. Micah needed a win against
Andrew to win the tournament, and finally prevailed in a bishop and
pawns versus knight and pawns ending. As a result, Micah finished
first with 4 1/2 points in 5 games, followed by Chris with 4 points.
Sean, Andrew, Art Milne and Fisher Zheng tied for third with 3
points. Fisher was the top junior.

The two top-rated players tied for first in the Alberta Closed.
Vicente Lee and Jeff Reeve drew their last-round game in 35 moves,
giving them scores of 3 1/2 out of 5. Greg Huber and Rob Gardner
both won their last two games to finish with 3 points each. Greg
beat Vicente in Round 4 and then defeated Victor Kaminski in the
middle game after Victor's aggressive opening play in Round 5. Greg
was the top Calgarian. In the longest last-round game, Dale Haessel
tried hard to win an ending with e, f, g and h pawns and dark-squared
bishop against Rob's g and h pawns and rook, but Dale went astray in
time pressure. Victor finished with 1 1/2 points and Dale with 1/2.

The complete results:

Round I
Reeve 1 Huber
Gardner 0 Lee
Kaminski 1 Haessel

Round II
Huber 1 Haessel

A fourth-round showdown looms for the lead in the Alberta Reserves.
Micah Hughey with 3 points will have white against Chris Kuczaj who
has 2 1/2.

There are five players with 2 points: master Sean Perron who has
returned to local chess after a long absence, Andrew Boik, Art Milne,
Eric Hansen, and Carolyn McMaster. Andrew will play Art in Round 4,
while Eric will play Sean. Carolyn plays Janna Poliakov for the
second time in the Women's Championship.

Graham Sorgard, Thomas Kaminski, Bill Bentley and Fisher Zheng all
have 1 1/2 points. Graham is taking a fourth-round bye, Bill is
playing Thomas, and Fisher is playing Cornelia Dinca from the Women's
Championship. There are 18 players in the Reserves. Roy Yearwood is
directing all three tournaments.

The Alberta Women's Championship has resulted in a 3-way tie, so they
have to do it all over again. Carolyn McMaster defeated Janna
Poliakov but lost to Cornelia Dinca. Cornelia then lost to Janna in
Round 3, leaving the players with 1 point each. TD Roy Yearwood
decreed the women will play another 3 rounds tonight and tomorrow,
with the colours reversed from the first three rounds. (They play in
the Alberta Reserves in the rounds in which they would otherwise have
a bye.)

Nobody has yet told me that I shouldn't advertise Edmonton
tournaments here. Calgarians are welcome to advertise their
tournaments on the Edmonton Chess newsgroup:

Just a few minutes ago, GM Vassily Ivanchuk (rated 2711, #11 in the
world) confirmed that he will play in the Canadian Open 2005 in
Edmonton, July 9-17.
Yesterday, GM Alexei Shirov (rated 2713, #10 in the world) confirmed
his participation too.

We are glad to have the confirmed participation of several strong
Canadian GM's and IM's, as well. Here they are, in no particular
order:

GM Dmitri Tyomkin (2512). GM Tyomkin is the Canadian Open 2004 co-
champion and will be back to defend his title.

Canadian Champion IM Pascal Charbonneau (2498) will play.

We are proud to have Canadian GM Mark Bluvshtein (2523) playing.

IM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon (2425), one of Canada's newest IM's.

In addition to playing, all of these players, including Shirov and
Ivanchuk, will conduct either a lecture or a simul during the course
of the tournament.

The Chess Federation of Canada is now accepting early entries (a $40
savings):
