From the ACA site:

Record 28 players took part in the Calgary Active Championship 2006,
including IM Mikhail Nekrasov from Ukraine, four players from
Edmonton, one from Lethbridge and ten juniors. Surprisingly high
attendence forced TD to run for more chess equipment and laptop and
the start of the first round was delayed by 30 minutes. The venue is
new and roomy however the air conditioning was not finished in April
and the makeshift one couldn't do the right job to cool the hot games.
Yes, there were very good games and surprises, even IM Nekrasov was in
jeopardy however, he cashed the $100 top prize with a smile. In the
group of strong players, junior John Yan (a newcomer from China) and
Edmontonian Nick Haynes were performing very well. The U1700 group was
represented mainly by juniors who have enjoyed the tournament and had
opportunity to observe masters in action and gain more tournament
experience for themselves.

The prize winners/results:

OPEN:
1. Mikhail Nekrasov 5.5/6.0
2. John Yan 5.0/6.0
3. Micah Hughey 4.5/6.0

U1850
1-2 Nick Haynes 4.0/6.0
Vlad Rekhson 4.0/6.0

U1700
1-3. Rick Pederson 3.5/6.0
Thomas Kaminski 3.5/6.0
Adam Harris 3.5/6.0

JUNIOR
1. Victor Kaminski 4.0/6.0
2. Vlad Constantinescu 3.0/6.0

I would like to say thank you to IM "Mike" Nekrasov and to the
successful commando from Edmonton (they all four won money!) and to
Joshua Willie from Lethbridge for taking part in this tournament.

Calgary Active Championship was started last year by Calgary
Scholastic Chess League but has already became the annual tradition of
the Calgary Chess Club.

I hope to see you at the Calgary Spring Sectional May 20-22.

Martin,

Could you please reserve a seat for IM Mikhail Nekrasov, who is
coming? I will call you about this tomorrow. Adam Harris also wants
to come.

Jim,

I never said this. You put the words "rubber stamping" in
quotation marks, as if you were quoting me, but I never used those
words.

What I said was that the ECC board might sponsor another
Edmonton International next year, and that I would vote for such a
motion. I only have one vote on a board of seven people, so it is
hardly "rubber stamping". I'm sure that some board members, maybe
even a majority, would be opposed to the motion.

I was not talking about the ACA board, only the ECC board, and I
made that very clear in my message. Just like in 2006, The ACA will
have to decide seperately if it wants to contribute a little money
towards a possible 2007 Edmonton International.

Vlad wrote :"It can't be too good since it conflicts with the UofA
Open in Edmonton, "_so some of the top juniors won't play", but

Actually we're aware of the conflict but had limited options as
Richard Canal is in Ontario later in May and people need time to make
travel plans for the CYCC. It bothers me, however, that you assume
that the Juniors will automatically choose the U of A tournament. It
qualifies them for what?! This kind of "Edmonton-centricity" from an
ACA board member speaks to an ongoing attitude problem toward Calgary
events. The ACA reluctanty turned the ACA tournament schedule upside
down to accomodate the Edmonton International, changing three
tournament dates in the process. Then Calgarians supported the events
as usual. Meanwhile Edmontonians have stayed away in droves from all
recent "ACA" events in Calgary. As a board member, you can't claim on
the one hand to support rebuiding chess in Calgary, then stay away
from the tournaments as well as make comments like the one above.
There is a serious disconnect between your claimed aims and your
actions. Meanwhile Micah's comment earlier about "rubber stamping"
the
Edmonton International as an annual event should be debated carefully
with a view to it's effect on the ACA's main tournaments (like the
Alberta Closed) being bounced around.I'm not just complaining for the
sake of complaining. Calgarians are being made to feel like invited
guests at the ACA dinner table. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE...

justly punished by accurate play on Brian's part. I may take a break
from the next tournament as I seem to have trouble focussing at the

It was good to have met you Casper, and it was great to have you as a part of
the CCC for the 3 1/2 months that you were here for. I hope your stay in Calgary
was enjoyable and we hope to see again in the near future. Also, I was one of
few that had the privilege of playing against you. Even though I lost the game,
I like to think I gave you a bit of a challenge. Anyway, hope you have a safe

IM Mikhail Nekrasov (2406) said he's interested in playing in the
Calgary Active Championship on April 29th.

He had a very good performance at the Edmonton International,
finishing 4th in a tough crowd of 4 IM's, 2 FM's and 4 Masters.

Thanks for everything Casper. I'm proud that I gave you two of the
5.5 :-)

I'll definitely look you up if I'm passing through Denmark. There's a
Europe trip in the works in the next couple of years.

Dear all members in Calgary Chess Club

I wish to thank all of you for the great time I've had in your Chess
Club the last 3½ months. Unfortunately I'm traveling back to Denmark
next Tuesday the 25th of April but I will definitely be thinking of
you when I return to Denmark. I've been very glad to get a change to
learn all of you - both the one that beat me in chess and the one
that I got a change to beat! The end the score for the regular games
in the "match" Casper vs. Calgary was 7½ - 5½ in favour of me so
I'll at least be leaving you with a little smile on my face ;-)

I will try following the Calgary chess news on your different
websites and had join your Yahoo-group as a member too. If anyone
wants to get in contact with me in Denmark feel free to send an
email at:
casper_schultz@...
Both if any of you by a "coincidence" should be passing by Denmark
on your way! Or if anybody get a change to play a Danish chess
tournament and beat all the Danish chess players!

Thank you for now and I hope to see you again in the future.
Best regards
Casper Schultz

Is anyone interested in teaching chess to a young student? - about 8-9
years old? Anyone in the 1600 ballpark range or better would probably
be a huge help. I think I'm too busy right now, and want to take a
chess break over the summer. I can pass on some contact info for you
if you like - I don't know any other details like rate or how often
they want lessons.

Hi Guys,
Is anyone going to the Keres Memorial in Vancouver this year?

     May 19 - 22, 2006
     www.keresmemorial.com

IM Mikhail Nekrasov would possibly be interested in going with someone
or sharing a room there.

He's also interested in the local scene, so hopefully we'll see him at
the Calgary Chess Club sometime. I mentioned our upcoming team
tournament to him, but I don't know if he will play or not yet.

Dale and I are travelling up to Edmonton with him for the upcoming
Edmonton International.

Thanks,
Juraj

Unfortunately Martha Fierro had to withdraw from the Edmonton
International yesterday, because of 'personal reasons.'
Fortunately, after I recovered from the heart attack, I was able to
find a worthy replacement for her in a former Canadian champion IM
Lawrence Day.
Because of a tough schedule IM Day will not be able to provide a
lecture, however he will still do the simul which will start at 7:00
pm, Wednesday night at the ECC. The simul will be $10 per person on
first come, first serve bases. I already have a list of people who
have reserved a spot for the Fierro simul and I will still keep
their reservation for this event. If you wish to reserve a spot
please let me know. All the money will be used as a fund-raiser for
the Edmonton International.

I am very sorry for the inconvinience and hope to see all of you
there.
