To everyone receiving:
I'd like your help choosing our next Warfare Thru the Ages battles.

At The National World War II Museum we run annual springtime Weekend Wargames
highlighting comparative military history. We run identical miniatures
battlefield tables side-by-side, choosing actions that have actually occurred in
geographic proximity over time.
For example, we have run:

-          Sicily - Syracusans/Carthaginians; Normans/Arabs;
Brits/Italians-Germans

- Lake Peipus - Russians/Teutonics; Soviets/Germans
Obviously they must center on a WWII battle site. We generally run Field of
Glory and Flames of War 15mm.

Does anyone know of a geographic site around the world which hosted both a WWII
battle and one or two more historical actions? Zama?? Of is there a Roman/Hill
tribe; medieval; WWII site?? Any ideas welcome.

I have updated the gaming pages for Friday & Saturday.

Game Masters and Gaming Groups you are RESPONSIBLE for making sure I have
the correct information posted.

Please, when sending me changes or corrections you are very clear on what I
need to add or fix.

River Parishes & Jackson Wargamer's have pretty much have their FIVE games
lined up for the competition, although details are missing on a few games
but those slots are locked in.

Dwaine Balius has got a group out of Peoria, IL to run a FOW game and the
photos of the game's terrain are impressive and hopefully when I connect
with our web master he will tell me how to link the photos to the game
description.

Now, here is where we stand and I mean us: Bayou Wars.

1- I am behind in getting the info to our web master on our Guest of
Honor: Ed of Two Hours Wargames.

2- I am behind in getting the painting competition rules that Jason
has devolved to our web master.

3- We have very few games (other than the group competition)
scheduled.

4- Several of the games that I have scheduled are marked "as more
details coming."

I would like to start advertising Bayou Wars, but, I am not going to do it
when we have so many blanks in the schedule.

I am off next week and will make sure I get to our web master the necessary
info for the items I am responsible for.

However, I am asking, of each and every one of you to start sending in some
games with detail information.

John

Howdy Gents,

Tis time for another issue of Old Soldiers.  There are several very good
history articles this time.  We complete Malcolm Archibald’s Dictionary of
Scottish Battles.  There are also two very fine articles one on the 9 Years War
1688-1697 which I found especially interesting, and another upon a small event
in Scottish history, the Battle of Glenshiel 1719.  These two articles are some
of the finest I have come across in many a year.  I commend them to you
heartily.  Also while I was doing some research for White Dog Games upon the
events surrounding Braddock’s Defeat, I came across several interesting
references to the strange influences and impediments to the creation of a
militia in the Quaker Colony of Pennsylvania.  It had never crossed my mind,
but it was an obvious problem that a colony founded upon strict Quaker beliefs
in non-violence would find itself upon the horns of a dilemma between law, king,
self defense, and violence.  How
  these
obstacles were skirted and overcome has influence even upon the interpretation
of today’s US 2nd Amendment.
The magazine now reaches 1300 subscribers, though no doubt when I send
this issue there will be a goodly number of bounced addresses which will require
elimination, the magazine continues to grow.  I’m hopeful it will reach 1500
subscribers by the time we reach Issue 7 No. 1 next fall.  People continue to
ask me why I don’t charge money for this.  Well, I’m not one of those
do-gooders by far who devote themselves to a life of contemplation and
volunteerism at local shelters.  I’m sure these people do good work, but
I’m a carnivore, I don’t eat rabbit food, I hunt, and I make most hawks seem
like Bambi.  Simply put, I believe the world is in grave peril and an
understanding of history is vastly important; if we can see where we’ve been,
better to see where we’re going.

NEW Old Soldiers Catalog March 2010 Available:  I’d have liked to have
attached the latest copy of the catalog to this e-mail, but the size limitations
of many subscriber’s mail boxes prevent that (it would be about 12mb total
size, which would exceed many single e-mail limits and mail box e-mail sizes by
at least 2 mb).  So, if you would like to have a copy of this, let me know, or
alternatively you can download it from www.oldsoldiersmagazine.com (where
shortly it will be posted) and from Bunker Hill Games www.bunkerhillgames.com
who will also be posting it to their site shortly.

Guys:
I have decided upon the mid-May "Warfare Thru the Ages" games. This event is
usually held in May to help advertise our N.O. summer conventions, Bayou Wars
and Heat of Battle.

This May I would like to feature a Saturday Weekend Wargame featuring 3
side-by-side armies that all fought close by each other in modern-day Tunisia.
Using Field of Glory
Zama - Carthaginians vs. Republican Romans
Ad Decimum/Tricamarum - Early Byzantines vs. Vandals

Using Flames of War
WWII fighting around Medjez el Bab - British and/or American vs. German

I have Carthaginians/most of the Republicans needed/Vandals

What I don't have is Early Byz and WWII forces. Of course, we will need at
least 6 players (1 per army) minimum.
Who would like to take part? These are great opportunities to intro folks to
Historical Wargames!
Please prioritize your May Saturdays in order of availability. Just not May 1
'cause that's Jazzfest and I'll be front row center for Jeff Beck.

I have updated the schedule for Friday and Saturday.

I added a series of Axis and Allies War Sea games, a couple of games by the
East Carolina University Historical Simulations Group, a 1898 naval battle,
Close Action Wooden Ships, D&D Miniature Tournaments games, a Napoleonic
Game, and a World War II tank battle.

Game Masters please check your times and descriptions.

I still have plenty of room for more games. DO NOT FEEL LIMITED TO THE SLOTS
IN THE POSTED SCHEULE. Those slots are just there for formatting purposes.

We have plenty of room.

I will add the Sunday schedule in a day or two.

Thanks to everyone who has stepped up and is running a game.

John

Well, if you're looking for a battle near Medjez el Bab, the British 11th
Brigade Group attacked that town on 24 Nov 1942 (and failed to take it); the
Germans abandoned it on 26 Nov. The Germans attempted to retake the town on 10
Dec 1942 (and also failed).

11th Brigade Group comprised three British infantry battalions, an understrength
US armored regiment equipped with M-3 mediums, British artillery, US artillery
and a tank destroyer company, and a British reconnaissance squadron. The Germans
were largely from a field-expedient Fallschirmjager battalion (which was
apparently quite good) supported by some scratch artillery and anti-tank units.

The 10 Dec battle ultimately involved two understrength US armored battalions (1
M-3 mediums, the other M-3 lights), 2 US armored infantry battalions, the Argyll
and Sutherland Highlanders, and the French 4th Mixed Zouave and Tiralleurs
Regiment (among other units) for the Allies and the 86th Panzergrenadier
Regiment, 7th Panzer Regiment (understrength but equipped with PzIVGs), and a
detachment from 501 Panzer Battalion (Tigers!) plus supporting units for the
Germans.

I suspect people are more likely to have miniatures for 11th Brigade Group and
the German paratroops than for any battle involving French colonial troops and
the French contribution to the 10 Dec battle is crucial. Anyway, nobody wants to
face Tigers with Stuarts!

A non-BW yahoogroupie brought up this question at the WWII museum last weekend.
Since the closing of Galactic, is there a game shop/game-playing venue left in
the New Orleans area? He was looking for new gaming opportunities. FYI, the
museum cannot support a broader gaming schedule.
Gulf Coast has their game days (held at a community center) and Baton Rouge uses
(I believe) private office space. Are either of these types of spaces (or
others) available in New Orleans?
Can somebody (somebodies) step up to make inquiries? My only idea is that a
site off I-10 might be best (Delgado??)
Maybe implement after advertising at BW??

To implement, I'd think we might need an N.O. area organizer like Bill Majure
does for Gulf or Steve Wirth for B.R. Of N.O. residents, I already have Heat
and Hilton has BW.
Or let it slide and just have folks play at home (and the museum, Heat and BW)

Also, the East Bank Regional branch of the Jefferson Parish library system has

Vittorio Veneto model they lost for some gaming time in their building.

I think the college (Delgado/UNO/others??) idea is great. Maybe someone
(already associated?) could make that request.
Re: Jeff Parish libraries, I am happy to introduce anyone to the one staff
person I know there (contact me at the museum, if interested). That person can
cultivate the relationship and request rooms on a monthly basis. (Larry, you
already have a built-in "loss of the Veneto" guilt trip to lay on them.)
I will continue to ask for space for spring/summer display space there to market
BW and Heat.
