I realize this post has been up a while and more or less dead for a couple of
months but as I am new to the board I thought I would chime in. I am usually a
BM, as such it is my job to create encounters that challenge players but not
activly try and kill them. It is not an adversarial game BM vs player. I try
to guage the ability and inteligence of my " enemy NPC " and play him like i
think he would react. For instance, "most" soldiers on guard duty in an
environment where nothing has happened for a month get lazy. However if they
were attacked yesterday they are going to be more alert. Also the best
equipment is not always available to even the best troops. Sometimes even the
enemy has to worry about the loggies and funding. That being said lets say
Party a is doing everything right and enemy b gets lucky and blows the head off
of the Eridani Killing Machine. Guess what, I am the BM I can change the hit to
anything I want if I think it will progress the game. The BM is GOD if I dont
like it I can change it. Now if the party is doing everything in its abilities
to **** it up then I may let the hit stand or change it to knocking him
unconsious instead so he is still out of action but not having to reroll. So it
is up to the BM to ensure that the game is fun and that the players can
progress. I personaly dont like the " hyper realism" to me it is a Sci Fi game
and that is how I run it. I dont however award stupid or lazy playing and
tactics. Stupid people die which is as it should be, Cull the Herd. I liked
the guy who wrote that he had his players use premade characters to run through
some combat scenarios first, this lets them see how deadly the game can be and
adopt tactics accordingly.
Well I guess that is all I have.
Hi all - long time no post. Here I am again, considering returning to the universe of Battlelords. Why did I leave? A couple of reasons, but mostly it boiled...
I think to groups used to playing D&D and Champions BL23C IS much more dangerous. Most sci-fi/modern/realistic games are. In our first session I had each...
I really don't care about "level" based versus "skill" based games. In the long run, I find both enjoyable. There's no need to have Battlelords change in that...
They only time I would improvise with "levels or classes" if the group was unknowningly messing with Galatic X. Just to impress that GX doesn't exist for a...
Ive never played any game system (13 or so) that i havent had to change some rules. Not just adding house rules to decide some minor issues but some big system...
i disagree with Battlelords being any more difficult than other games, i loved Traveller and it's derivitives, in fact i still play the original edition of...
I understand your viewpoint - combat sucks. Your chance of randomly catching a career- or life- ending round is pretty good. But, that said, this is a game,...
You fallacy though is your assumption that even intelligent characters can't survive in the current system, and that is decidedly the opposite of the case....
After watching all of the points made about this topic, I want to just say: It depends on what kind of Battlemaster / Gamemaster you have. In BL23c I have...
You must not work at a MAJCOM then - lucky you! (I'll leave which one I work at in the air, lest I get myself in more trouble.). All I have to say is spend...
I agree that BattleLords is an equipment driven game. We have four books just on stuff to buy. Experience is often used for skills used in a non-combat...
I've come close to party wipes myself. My party tends to watch each other and notice when someone is down and moves to provide cover. I keep the NPC...
I don't remember the rulebook saying that "the bad guys usually have 2-4 times the people as the party". Any game or reality that has attackers at a 1:3...
On the survivability topic, I don't see how your party is having trouble surviving, excepting the head crits which tend to be brutal. I have two words for you...
... Hey Alex, I'm interested in the kinds of events that have killed your characters so far in Battlelords. Could you summarise a few of the most annoying...
The GM determines lethality far more than the game system. (except for Paranoia, where it is built in.) Some memorable scenarios that have killed characters...
Well this post isn't about how to make Battlelords more survivable, as somehow my Orions and Phentari usually wind up being the only survivors, but one of the...
