The World Championship is going to be in Vegas March 28-30.

Subject: 2008 Air Hockey World Championships Report

Hey all,

Just a short post to let everyone know that Vegas World Championships were awesome! The tournament was well run and organized and it was great to compete against and learn from the top players in the world. The competition was intense, but the atmosphere was very friendly and supportive to players at every level. The Austin crew had a great time playing in the tourney, meeting other players and getting a chance to hang out together in Vegas with friends new and old. I highly encourage everyone who can to make an effort to make it out next year. The air hockey was fun, but it was even more fun to take a vacation in a fun town with good friends. There was lots of air hockey, gambling, food, alcohol and very little sleep which all add up to a great time in my book. I hope more of the Austin crew can make it out next year. Hi, all! We’ve been continuing to have the weekly tourney’s, but have been slacking about posting the results. Going to try and get better about that, starting with the results from last night. Yet another fun tournament!. We had 8 players. I ended up winning, but David came out of the losers’ bracket and put me to the test winning the first set of the finals. Steven stepped up his game too, finishing a strong third. Looking forward to him moving up to a 2 soon. Returning new player Stefanie continues to show some serious skills, challenging the experienced players with her strong defense and spirited offense. Also, she and Justin both were excited enough about air hockey to buy their own low top mallets. Great to see the interest from the new players and hopefully a sign they will stick around.

For those of you who don't already know, there has been an air hockey
documentary in the works for some time. They were shooting part of it
in Vegas at the World Championship.

Last night's tournament was a blast! But, I must say, I think much too
long!

I really think we need to set down some rules about single elim in the
loser's bracket if we've got a large number of players. Last night we
had 12 players, and the vote was to do double elim all the way around.
But the tourney lasted past 2 am!

Please give me your feedback on this. Maybe I'll do a Yahoo poll.

And perhaps setting up a monthly Sat or Sun tourney that takes place
earlier will eliminate this issue for those of us who have early
morning jobs!

Anyway, would someone please mind forwarding over the final results
from last night? I can post them on MySpace. I'm still trying to
figure out what to do with the Facebook group page. Anyone have
suggestions?

I prefer single elimination in the losers' bracket when the numbers are over 8, but have been voted down in the past, even when I've been the director. I think that's mutiny!

I realize that double elimination all around does give newer players the chance to play one, or maybe two extra games, but it also extends the tournaments into the wee hours, and also keeps all players waiting longer in between matches.

I agree with Kendra that it would be good to have an agreement on how this should play out each week, as there isn't any official "policy" now. If everyone involved would take the time to weigh in, then we could have a fair vote, rather than going back and forth each week.

So my official vote is...single elimination in losers' bracket once we move above 8 players. That keeps it simple. And this is of course on one table play. If we ever have two players, then I'm fine with double elim all around.
