[Astate Command Center]

Jolias nodded to the Commander "Good work Commander.  Captain Furman has requested your presence in the secondary briefing room."

Aaliyah nodded in return towards the VAdm. "Thank you Sir. I shall attend the secondary briefing room as requested." She said with a sort of smile on her face as she turned on her heel and headed towards the secondary briefing room.

[Astate Command Center, Auxiliary Briefing Room]

Cilvia stared at the composed Romulans sitting across from her.  He wore an irritatingly mocking smile.  It was a smug look- almost a taunting expression "Why did you land your ship on the shoreline?" she asked.  He seemed to dismiss her question by gazing out the windows.  How bothersome.  Hearing the briefing room door open Cilvia stood up and smiled when Aaliyah stepped in "Counselor, just the person I wanted to see."  She motioned to one of the empty seats.

Aaliyah gave a beaming smile as she walked in the door. She wasn't sure who this particular Romlan was who was with Cilvia, but she could tell that letting her positive demeanor slip may well be a mistake. "Sorry it took so long Captain. Vice Admiral Enor said you wanted to see me? How can I be of help?" She said as she sat in the empty seat that was closest to her.

"This is Riov Ikaru Pardek- the Romulan Commander of the ship that crashed or landed just outside of Pyrrha."  Cilvia slid a PADD with all the information she had gathered so far "he is requesting asylum for himself and his crew."  She gave a respectful nod towards the Romulan "I'd like you to sit in on the meeting."

"Not a problem" Aaliyah said with another nod and a continued smile. She glanced down at the PADD and began glancing through the information she had just been handed. She had heard Pardek's name before and it had not all been good, but Aaliyah always took people as she found them. This meeting would be interesting.

"Mister Pardek."  Cilvia remained standing as she spoke to the Romulan "you say that the Romulan government has persecuted you?  Can you describe this persecution?"

"Is there a reason to describe what you have witnessed?"  Pardek crossed his arms and leaned back in the chair "they sent several vessels to attack us without warning.  There was no attempt to request surrender on their part.  They only wished to kill us.  You witness this yourself Captain."  Pardek smirked "or will you pretend blindness for political expedience?  Allow yourself to forget what yours discovered."

Cilvia glanced at Aaliyah before returning her attention to Pardek "to be honest Riov, I don't know what to think.  According to the Romulan Government you are a criminal who is responsible for the murder of over a dozen scrap yard workers.  Maybe when I looked at the scene going on in orbit I didn't see persecution but the just apprehension by force of a band of thugs."

"Your portrayal is inaccurate Captain."  Pardek uncrossed his arms and leaned forward "they never apprehended us.  Whether or not we are a band of thugs is for you to decide.  However I think it's highly cynical of you to dismiss my argument so easily.  Murders?  How hypocritical of the Empire to accuse me of things they have made an art of.  Have you forgotten the last war we fought?  How many of your people did they kill then?"  He turned his gaze towards Aaliyah "I'm sure it was plenty."

She was not impressed by his apparent need to show her that he was in some way pleased about the deaths. She wasn't going to bow to his ego though and simply stayed smiling as she had done before.

Aaliyah looked to Pardek. He was sure of himself when he gave those answers, but she sensed no remorse nor hurt at the fact that he had been accused, but rather that he enjoyed the process of arguing and using philosophical notions to back his ideas up. Aaliyah looked to him now to see what more she could glean from his body language.

"The wars of the past are not relevant to why we are here."  Cilvia spoke sternly "you are requesting political asylum.  We want to know why or more specifically why you would quality for political asylum.  A political exile is one thing but a criminal is another.  We won't grant shelter for the latter."

Pardek chuckled "Of course.  I have never expected more or expected less.  It is your decision Captain."

"You're not making a good case for yourself Riov."  Cilvia stated bluntly "if you want asylum you will have to provide us with evidence."

"And if you are provided with evidence will you look at it objectively?"  Shaking his head Pardek stood up "I cannot plead innocence to one who has already decided me guilty.  I will leave you to be the judge."

"I'm sorry you feel that way."  Cilvia motioned to the three security guards in the room "please escort him to his room.  I will notify you of our decision later Riov."  As soon as he was gone Cilvia dropped herself into a chair "so, what do you think about this Aaliyah?  He seems a bit disinterested to me."

"I would have to agree that there is more behind his request than genuine desire to be a refugee here." She took a deep breath, letting her smile slip a little. "In fact his request for asylum, I feel, seems to be a bi-product of something. He doesn't want it. It's a convenient excuse for something, although for the life of me I can't quite work out why or what his reasons would be at this time."  She said as she sat back in her chair, still thinking about what she had just seen and heard.

"I get a similar feeling."  Cilvia sighed wondering what these people were up to "we're going to give it a day to see if we can't find out what the underlying motives are but I don't think we'll be giving these people asylum.  So, do you think you will be busy later?"

"I would agree with that decision wholeheartedly. If you need me or any of my team to do a bit of research, covert or otherwise, we are of course at your disposal." Aaliyah smiled once more as she thought of how important it was to stay positive in these situations. All of a sudden she realized what the last thing Cilvia had said was. "I'm always busy with work! But was there something you had in mind?"

"Maybe we can grab a glass of coffee or something.  I'm burnt out and would enjoy a good chat for a bit."  Cilvia stood back up and stretched "so many things to do these days."

"Ah yes a coffee would be great SIR!" Aaliyah said pointedly and with a cheeky smile. She had the feeling that she had said that with a tad too much exuberance. "A coffee and a chat is much needed for me as I expect it is for you. We need to catch up on a lot"

"We certainly do."  Cilvia grinned "but for the moment" she reached out and picked up the PADD in front of Aaliyah "I need to report to the Admiral."

Aaliyah stood up. "Indeed. Was there anything in particular you would like me and my team to be working on for now?"

"Not specifically.  Keep your eye on the cadets however- you're still in charge of them since we haven't had the opportunity to straiten out their duties here."  Cilvia headed towards the door "see you later Commander."

"And you too Captain" Aaliyah took a deep breath as Cilvia left the room. The cadets were hard enough to get into their room in the first place, making sure they stayed there wasn't likely to be an easy task. "Although.." Aaliyah mumbled as she got an image of all the cadets in a giant ball pool. "That would keep them occupied" she whispered as she exited the room as well.
