Hello everybody, just wanted to introduce myself. Some of you might
know me from other groups, under this name or as Gungnir. (Sorry
Thor,in this case it should have been Mjolnir, ofcourse!) I'm 52, I
live in the Netherlands, and am interested in modelling, gaming,
model trains (scratch built G-scale) and books. I plan to start my
own modest publishing firm later this year.

I've had an interest in modelling and gaming for over 35
years, started with everything Airfixsold, but right now modelling is
more on the front burner than gaming. Not having space (yet) for a
good sized table, and nobody to game with are two main obstacles.

I like to cast my own figures, Napoleonic and Fantasy, with Prince
August molds, and I run the prince_august_moulds Yahoo-group. Besides
those two lines, I'm starting on 1/72 plastic ACW and 1/72 plastic
Wild West.

Scenery etc. is important to me too, if you want to see some of my
projects, like 25mm fantasy buildings and a modular dungeon system,
check out my site:

www.geocities.com/gungnirsstuff/Intro.html

Last but not least, I designed loads of paper buildings and a 3D hex
terrain set, they can all be found at PaperWorlds.com.

I'm joining this group hoping to learn something, and will put in my
two cents when I think it is applicable.

Thor,
I still have both Featherstone books, plus ones by Charles Grant
(musket period only), Joe Morehouser (still have about 70 54mm ACW
figures in 6-man units; IR, Scrubys, some other), and my favorite,
"How to Play Wargames in Miniature" by Young and Lawford (again,
musket only).
Based on the latter, I have about 460 25mm metal figures organized
into infantry companies (about 20 figures), cavalry squadrons (about
9) and guns (5-man crew). Oh, and "Little Wars" (H.G. Wells) as
well.
Anybody still have any of the hollow WWII troops (about 54mm; maybe a
bit larger) that we used to get from Hong Kong back in the 50's and
60's? My wife gave mine to the kids some years back, and that was
the end of that army!...8^(

Cool. of course I remember- Chainmail. Just a word of warning- I may be a lurker
for a while (work and all that real-life stuff) is interfering with my hobby a
little... My last project was helping Jeff Stuckey get the BAR rules checked and
ready (I'm a software tester, but I LOVE documentation). Now I need to spend
some time on real life and painting to chill out a little again.

I have recently been getting some of the old books I had that got me
started in the hobby. After three to four decades, a few still stand
up to the test of time. Back when I started, we had NOTHING but
Minitanks and Airfix soldiers. We devised a "game" that was more
liek a coin tossing session. Someone came across a copy of
Featherstone's War Games: Battles and Manouvres with Model
Soldiers. Wow! This was it. I recently acquired a 1962 copy,
after having not seen the book since...let's see, last time I saw it
must have been early 70s. It's amazing to go back and see where
we've been and how far this hobby has grown.

Did Featherstone revise War Games, or were all future editions just
reprints? I also have his Battles with Model Soldiers, and War
Games through the Ages 3000BC to ad 1500. I'm sure that if it
werent't for his first book, many of us would neverhave known the
hobby existed.

Happy soldiering

I would like to hear from fellow collectors who also play with their
soldiers who live in the Twin Cities Metro area of Minnesota. I
don't have an opponent (my army against yours?). I am a 37 year old

figures. I also like to set up my troops in my back yard when I game.

I have an idea for a sort of campaign game. All I ask is other
collectors who also play/game with their figures send me information
on the battles or wars they are currently involved in, information
on how their army is structured, i.e. names of units, size etc. and
the name of their mythical country. I in turn will do the same. When
I was a kid, the other boy I played against and I each had their own
made up country. If you haven't made up a country or named it, this
is your opportunity. This won't be like a traditional play by email
game. Players would battle independently and not have to wait for
others to make their moves. Players could use whatever battle rules
they are familar with. For it to resemble a campaign type game,
participants would have to send me battle reports on a regular or at
least semi regular basis. I will put the countries on a map and also
add new countries to a map as others join in.

I would like to start this with modern type or WW 2 era figures and
equipment. I also collect ACW and American Revolution figures and
those could be added later as a branch game.

If you are interested, please post a message and or contact me at
rorybezecny@...

Thanks,
Rory

I came across this site with free rules:

http://www.jimwallman.org.uk/wargame/

When you get there, scroll down and download the Lionel Tarr rules.
They are the prototype for Featherstone's WW2 rules in his first
book. There's an interesting story there, as wel las a change to
obtain decent WW2 rules for FREE. Many of us got our introduction
to wargaming via Featherstone's book. Note that the rules were
written foir using Minitanks and Airfix figure. You might have to
double or triple ranges for 54mm.

Also, can anyone make a copy of Jack Scruby's article on wargaming?
I understand he wrote an intro to the hobby and it was sold in
mimeographed form.

None of _us_ probably ever will, but many kids today have never known
about it to begin with--"War is bad" and all that, so a lot of
history courses just kind of skip over it. A recent survey indicated
35% of graduating h.s. seniors thought Beirut was in Vermont! I hope
they were goofing around, because if true, it is just too
depressing.

Two true examples from close to home:
My son, an honors student at William & Mary, asked me to take him to
see "Pearl Harbor" because he wanted to see the Japanese get their
butts kicked. After I regained consciousness I advised him it was the
other way around; OK, OK, he said, so they got us at P.H., and we
nuked 2 of their cities the following year. After again regaining
consciousness, I started to explain the course of the war in the
Pacific, at which point my wife, a teacher no less, said, "Now think,
Nate, what did FDR call the 6th of December?" "Probably I nice day
to visit the Rose Garden--it was the 7th of December!" I screamed on
my way to the oxygen tent.

Upon returning home from ICU, Nate and I watched "The Missiles of
October". He suddenly turned to me and asked, "Why do they keep
saying they have to talk to "DeGaulle's" people? They called
them 'Gauls" in Roman times. Shouldn't they call them 'the
French'?" Words failed me.

And this is a kid who has had my history junk all over the house his
whole life....

I had always been into figures; every Christmas my aunt sent me 2
boxes of Airfix, which were what I most looked forward to. Also, in
about 1961 (that dates me) I got Marx's Battle of the Blue and Grey
from my parents, the only time they ever indulged me. But I didn't
play "games" with any of this. When I was 12 at a sleep-over, my
friend's older brother brought out D-Day, which I thought was sent
straight from Heaven. That Christmas I asked for my own copy, but
all the store in town had was Gettysburg (the hex version), so I
settled for that and made my own D-Day game. I still made no
connection between gaming and figures, though. Slow, I guess.

I went to the first two GenCons in 1968-69 in Lake Geneva Wis., where
Ray Johnson and his group had 25mm Napoleonics. I thought I was back
in Heaven, but trying to find suitable figures was tough (I assumed
it would not be possible to game WWII--obviously I was still a few
lights short of a tree.) Somewhere or other I heard of Jack Scruby
and got some of his figures, and I bought a whole lot of plastic figs
off the backs of comic books (mostly American Revolution and Ancient
Romans). I also became a lifetime subscriber to S&T, and was burned
along with everyone else when they went under; I didn't play many
board games after that, although Battle Cry has reversed that trend.

I didn't really go into army men gaming until I discovered Thor's
site a few years ago, about the time I started helping to run the
kids program at HMGS conventions. My first love is still 25mm metal,
but larger-scale gaming definitely has its charms. Now that the kids
program appears to have been killed, I will probably run "games for
kids (of all ages)", using 54mm army men, BMC figures, etc. My
project for this summer, for example, will be a 54mm version of
Pickett's Charge using BMC civil war figures on Battlemasters maps.

I am considering starting an American Civil War play by e-mail
campaign. Players would move units around on a map and then resolve
the battles using their figures. Before anything could get started I
would like all who are interested to please answer a brief survey.

1)How many figures of that era do you have and what is the breakdown
(how many infantry, cavalry,etc.)?
2)Would you rather play a "what if" campaign (instead of battles at
Gettysburg or Atlanta we might have a battle in Iowa or Illinois)or do
you want actual events? Or both?
3)What size unit do you want to command?
4)Do you want to campaign in the East,West or both?
5)Do you want to command for the Union, Confederates or switch off?

I would like to see the game set up so that all participants
contribute and not just one person doing everything. If you are
interested, either e-mail me directly or leave a posting.

Thanks

How did folks get into this crazy hobby? I had no idea of wargaming
per se, although we tried making up "rules" for games with Airfix
soldiers and Roco Minitanks. Then someone lent me a copy of a "new"
book by Donald Featherstone, and it opened up a whole new world.
Featherstone's book recommended using Airfix figures, and it covered
WW2 / Modern (In the 60s, WW2 was still relativley "modern"), the
Civil War and Medieval War. No problem for us: we had LOADS of
Airfix Civil War and Sheriff of Nottingham knights, plus scads of
WW2 GIs and Roco tanks.

Not much later, there were reprints of HG Wells' Little Wars, and
this was an excuse to buy Britians "Herald" line of figures, namely
Coldstream Guards, Life Guards and Khaki Infantry. I loved Wells'
simplicity.

Then came the Army - real armored vehicles. I prefer miniature
armored vehicles. The real ones are uncomfortable, messy, and
require a lot of work all the time. Especially M109 Howitzers.
(How long ago? Well, we had the "new improved" version, the
M109A1. I think they're up to the a8 or a9 by now, some 30 years
later)

After the Army, we started doing more Medievals, and along came
Chainmail, a "new" medieval game with a Fantasy Supplement. We
never played Fantasy, although we used to enjoy reading Robert E
Howard's Conan novels.

Some folks got into Dungeons and Dragons. We didin't - we were into
battle games.

Next, Metagaming's Melee series and a "Royal Armies of the Hyborian
Age" Then this, and that....well, here I am some 20+ years after
buying my original copy of "Royal Armies"

I think Donald Featherstone's clear way of introducing games turned
a hobby of collecting and model-building into a hobby that could
also embrace historical gaming.

explains that due to a persistent email virus, ther may be
slowdowns. I notice that regular email has also slowed down
somewhat. As usual, be careful of attached files in email, even if
it seems to come from a friend. Some viruses scan email address
books and send copies to those listed, using as a return address the
email address of the site they are infecting.

Hey Thor, I have a complete copy of the book. Pretty interesting,
actually, especially considering when it was written. I will have to
dig it out, but will let you know when I find it and shoot you a copy.

Okay, we've been trying tp put this Wargaming site together quietly,
butn ow is the time to annoucne it and let folks join. I would like
to have this be a more interactive forum and website, so that
the "All Wargames and wargaming" website is a viable resource, not
just a great big links page.

I admit my participation in games had been limited mainly to
Ancient / Medieivalk and 20th Century. My crew never did
Napoleonics (we had low regard for toy soldiers known colloquially
as "Napoleon Guys"), I did very little Civil War. Thus, the input
of those experienced in Napoleonics, Civil War and related
conmflicts will help make those section of the website much better.

Also, be on the lookout for a book entitled "Sham-Battle How to play
with toy soldiers", by a Lieutenant Harry G Dowdall (US Army) and
Joseph H. Gleasaon. I would like to have a copy, or even scanned
pages of the book.

many thanks!

Thor
