The reasons are many and long-winded. To sum it up CircleMUD is a
more developed and stable source code than SMAUG. While CircleMUD
does not have some of the bells and whistles SMAUG does it is meant
to be a starting point for coders to add their own features.
CircleMUD has extensive documentation/donated code, areas/mailing
lists/etc. Most importantly it has a powerful on-line-creation (OLC)
system for builders which includes a trigger editor to allow
rooms/mobs/objs to be interactive. This makes a much richer world
and allows the builders, not just the coders, to create a realistic
world. That is why The Builder's Academy is based off stock CircleMUD.
