The event will be held all day Saturday and Sunday, so coaches must be able to attend both days.

2) ABBF Winter Championship: Finals round in August - dates & details

The top 8 teams by the end of July will battle it out for the Winter Championship during the month of August. This will be a straight knock-out affair, but coaches are welcome to keep playing for position after being knocked-out of the competition.
The remaining teams will play it out for the Plate and Wooden Spoon.

To qualify for the top 8 teams need to have played a minimum of 10 games. The positions will be determined by points average. Teams with less than 10 games at the end of July will have their missing games counted as losses for determining their points average.

The schedule for the finals round is as follows:
03/08/09 - Quarter-final (1st - 8th, 2nd - 7th, 3rd - 6th, 4th - 5th)
10/08/09 - Semi-final (W1 - W2, W3 - W4)
17/08/09 - Final

The rest of August will be our back-up dates in case of availability issues. The new season will start the week after the final. The Streetbowl league will continue to run until the end of the year.

3) Blood Bowl at CityGuard: What's the story

Reports have been coming in over the past few months that the occasional game of Blood Bowl is being played at the CityGuard on Sundays again. That's right folks, for those of you that might not be able to make to the pub on Mondays, you can simply play your games at the club on Sundays... or anywhere else for that matter.
The ABBF was born at the CityGuard during a time that has long since passed into legend, so we strongly encourage people to keep the game alive at Auckland's premier war gaming club. You can check out their website here:

If you need to get in touch with coaches to arrange a game, simply email us at the League Commission (reply to this email) or sign up to the Yahoo Group:

4) ABBF Winter Championship: Weeks 15-17 results & reports

Week 15

The Midnight Suns Human team cemented their position at number 2 spot on the table this week, with a 2-1 victory over the PVC Elf franchise in front of 26,000 spectators. Both teams scored once before halftime and even the Elves' Wizard got in on the action early in the match... without much success, though. The second half saw the Humans holding on to the ball for dear life for most of the half, despite some desperate defensive efforts from PVC. As the KOs and injuries kept mounting for the Elves, however, there were just too few defenders left to stop the Suns from scoring the winning touchdown.

After managing a draw against PVC some weeks ago, the league's favourite brutes Thas Copacs claimed their second win this season against another Elf team, the aptly named Elf Destruct Mechanism. In the words of Chaos Pact coach Dan the Dangerous: "Strategic fumbles by the Elves meant that my Chaos boys could run in two touchdowns to monsterbully vanquish the hairdressers". We have nothing further to add.

Current league leaders the Orcland Worriers took on the leaders from the other end of the table, the Grimmenhagen Ghosts, with 27,000 people in attendance. Follow the link below to read the full report of this epic struggle:

Skaven franchise Time Out Of Mind sneakily arrange a match behind closed doors against the Atexs Lizardman team on the weekend... but about 25,000 of their sneaky fans managed to sneak in anyway. Although the rats keep loosing an awful number of players each match, they keep racking up the points. What's more, they usually give just as good as they get on the casualty front and this game was no exception. 4-2 touchdowns to the Skaven and a hefty casualty count of 3 all.

Midnight Suns (Human) vs PVC (Elf) 2-1 (4-2)
Thas Copacs (Chaos Pact) vs Elf Destruct Mechanism (Elf) 2-1 (4-1)
Orcland Worriers (Orc) vs Grimmenhagen Ghosts (Human) 2-0 (2-1)
Atexs (Lizardman) vs Time Out Of Mind (Skaven) 2-4 (3-3)

Total TD: 14 - Total Cas: 20

Week 16

A Bit Thor took on the highly favoured Jacksonburg Jaguars this week and held them to a 2 all draw. They also managed to survive the match almost intact, with only one casualty to the Humans. The Jags weren't quite so happy about the results, as they had plenty more opportunities to put the game away... but the stretch across the goal line simply proved too much for no less than two of Jacksonburg's players.

Thas Capocs made it two in a row this week, when they beat the Grimmenhagen Ghosts 2-1 on touchdowns and 3-2 on casualties. As usual, it was brute force that prevailed for the Chaos Pact team, aided by the ever-reliable bad luck of the Human Ghosts. This result catapults Thas Capocs right up into the middle of the table, whereas Grimmenhagen boys continue to hug the bottom of the table.

After a shocking performance last week, PVC had really had to make an impression this week to appease fans fans and critics. They did just that in their match against Atexs. It was only 1-0 to the Elves at half-time and there were only 6 Elves fit to tale the field for the second spell. But these six always seemed to be a step ahead of the Lizards, launching a Blitz at kick-off and exploiting a crucial fumble later in the half to bring the game home 3-1. Casualties were 3 all, including 1 death and 3 serious injuries.

A Bit Thor (Norse) vs Jacksonburg Jaguars (Human) 2-2 (0-1)
Thas Capocs (Chaos Pact) vs Grimmenhagen Ghosts (Human) 2-1 (3-2)
PVC (Elf) vs Atexs (Lizardman) 3-1 (3-3)

Total TD: 11 - Total Cas: 12

Week 17

The Grimmenhagen Ghosts set the seasons record for most casualties inflicted in a single match, when they massacred PVC for a 3-2 victory. The Humans inflicted a total of 8 casualties on the Elves, including 1 death and 4 serious injuries. Amazingly, though, there was a single Elf left standing (out of 3 left on the pitch) at the end of the match, showing the grim determination with which PVC fought until the bitter end.

The brave Norsemen that are A Bit Thor took on Cash To Cap, the ever name-changing Chaos Pact team, this week... and they survived again. Not content with merely surviving, though, they also took home a 2-0 victory, further cementing their current spot in the top 4 of the table. Casualties went 3-1 in favour of the Chaos Pact, which was the least to be expected, especially by the coach.

In the upset of the season so far, current league leaders the Orcland Worriers suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Elf Destruct Mechanism. No matter how much the Orcs seemed to be beating up on the Elves (casualties were 4-0), they were still running rings around them for most of the match. EDM finished the encounter in style, initiating a beautiful passing play under pressure in the dying seconds of the match to make it 3-1.

Grimmenhagen Ghosts (Human) vs PVC (Elf) 3-2 (8-1)
A Bit Thor (Norse) vs Cash To Cap (Chaos Pact) 2-0 (1-3)
Orcland Worriers (Orc) vs Elf Destruct Mechanism (Elf) 1-3 (4-0)

Total TD: 11 - Total Cas: 17

5) Blood Bowl at NICON09: Tournament report

As most of you would know, there was a Blood Bowl tournament at Nicon earlier this year. So we've tracked down the organiser to say a few words about how it went. Over to you, Bob:
"We had 10 players from both ends of the North Island. Wellington and Auckland coaches made the journey to Nicon to play Blood Bowl.

I'm pleased to say there were no serious time consuming rules queries or heated arguments. I got to play all my games without difficult questions and watch a couple as well.

In the 5 rounds of games before the final placings we had 59 touch downs and more importantly 107 casualties in the 25 games. Scoring was the good old Swiss chess and all results recorded on paper. Not a computer to be seen, why was this. Mainly because I was fed up with computers.

In first place was Nick and the Southside Stonesmashers, second was Paul with Poetry in Motion and Third place Alan with Frogger.

As a final observation.

In between games I was watching the rest of the hall from the stage. Laughter and happy coaches behind me. I tried desperately to see anyone smiling as they played the mainstream games. In the end a couple of coaches asked what I was looking for and we all scanned the hall, I think we saw a couple of smiling players and that was it.

Just shows the Blood Bowl is a great game."

Thank you Bob and well done for making it happen!

6) Blood Bowl in Christchurch: Alive & kicking

In an effort to bring the New Zealand Blood Bowl community a bit closer, this the first in (hopefully) a serious of features about other leagues around the country. Here's word from our man in the south, Paul:

"Blood Bowl is alive and kicking in Christchurch.  ChriBBL (Christchurch Blood Bowl League) started in February 2009.  It is a (very) open league, and uses the latest ruleset (2008 rules review plus experimental rules, also known as 6.0 draft).  These rules, with only minor amendments at the end of 2009, are expected to become permanent for quite a long time.  The league is specifically designed to welcome "newbies" (coaches who are new to Blood Bowl) and "rusties" (those who are returning to the hobby after a gap of some years).  The most active coaches are encouraged to run more than one team in the league.  In practice, this means that there is always a suitable opponent for anyone to play against, regardless of their skill and experience level.  In general terms, we dislike "house rules" and intend to keep things largely "plain vanilla" (because this is the best way to include newcomers, and the least likely to deter people).

We are encouraged by the new ruleset (5th and 6th Editions) which seem to be well liked by coaches, especially by many who had left the hobby previously because of dissatisfaction with previous rulesets.

ChriBBL has 8 very active coaches at any one time, plus a further 8 coaches who play occasionally in the league, plus a further 8 who do not play in the league, but are on the e-mail list and may play in tournaments or join next year's league.  We also have a coach resident in Dunedin, and are most happy to include anybody, provided they travel to Christchurch at least occasionally.  We plan to run a major open league each year (say Februrary to December) plus tournaments (one major at year end, another smaller tournament at mid-year, which this year will be a one day Street Bowl tournament as part of Ambush!).

We meet "formally" 3 times a week: Tuesdays at my place (Ilam), Thursdays at Cavaliers (St Albans Shirley Club), Sundays at Christchurch Wargaming (Woolston Club), plus privately by arrangement between coaches.  Having these different venues available on different days, and in different parts of town seems definitely to have helped.

My name is Paul Deacon, I am the league commish of ChriBBL, and I should be the first point of contact for anybody wanting to join ChriBBL or know anything about us.  My e-mail ispauldeacon@... and my phone is (03) 351 6327.

I guess I am a bit of a BB nut, having played a mere 54 league games in the last 5 months.  I also like to play in tournaments, being a regular at CanCon and EucBowl (the 2 largest tournaments in Australia) plus the Greenstone Cup in Auckland.  I like to get to other NZ tournaments if I can (the last being Nicon in Napier), and would be keen to see an increased flow of information between the Blood Bowl groups in NZ.  I have a masochistic streak, and like a challenge, so my main team at the moment is Nurgle.  But my main interest (apart from playing, of course) is to promote the game to others.  So I am always keen to help newcomers, and I like to coach others if they are willing, or at least to provoke them into exploring the game further.  Above all, BB is fun, and I try to enhance this side of the game with my irregular newsletter, The Fluff! magazine."

As always, please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone you think might be interested.
If, for whatever reason, you no longer wish to receive this newsletter, simply reply to this email and let us know.

That's it for this issue... long live Blood Bowl!!!
