Back in the Mesozoic, Crocodiles were a surprisingly diverse group (my
"Porlaso crocodile" is based on a real croc that actually had flippers
and tail flukes), and, scary as they are now, they used to be worse! All
grist to the mill, especially (IMO) in Pameltela.

Or at least it should be, in the UK anyhow. It's on the latest new releases
sheet from Esdevium Games.

And at the considerably more appealing than expected price of £19.99 as
well.

Now just hoping Sartar will follow in time for Christmas.

Normally, when something says "a $XX value", it is being sold for less than
XX, giving the impression (correctly or not) that you are getting a deal by
*only* paying $YY.

So if the Boxed RQ2 was $20 (as the RQC states), and says it is a "$26
Value" then you're getting $6 worth of stuff "free".

The original deep box RQ2 was advertised at $26. That box set had apple lane as
well as fangs and a few other bits and pieces. It was twice the price of the
softcover rulebook.

My own dim recollection is that when I bought it in Spring 1984, RQ2 was sold
in the UK in a Games Workshop boxed set, for £10.00. That included some dice,
some pre-prepared NPCs and "Basic Role-playing" as well.

I don't remember the £: $ exchange rate at this time, but if it was £1 = $1.50,
then the £10.00 boxed set was broadly comparable to $12.00 for just the book.

Like other correspondents, I expect the new edition of RQ after Avalon Hill
became involved (late 1984?) was probably the nadir of prices, after allowing
for inflation.

Okay, after hunting through my collection of ancient, musty, RQ2 materials I
came upon a price list from the RuneQuest Companion, copyright 1983. It claims

RuneQuest...$12.00
Hardcover RuneQuest...$15.00
Boxed RuneQuest...$20.00
SnakePipe Hollow..$6.00
Cults of Prax...$12.00
Foes...$12.00
Plunder...$6.00
RuneMasters...$12.00
Cults of Terror...$10.00
Borderlands...$16.00
Trollpak...$18.00
SoloQuest...$8.00
Questworld...$15.00
Scorpian Hall...$10.00
The Snow Queen's Bride...$6.00
Pavis...$18.00
The Big Rubble...$10.00(probably a typo, since it also claims BR to be a book
rather than a boxed set.)
RuneQuest Companion....$8.00

Some of these may have had reduced prices, as I think RQ3 was in the pipeline by
this point, but I still don't think RQ2 went for $26.00 dollars. I suspect that
Jeff's copy was part of some kind on bundle.

Again on the broader point I think Jeff is correct; current prices are indeed at
least as good as past ones.

I wonder how I could have afforded $26 for a game in 1978? (Actually in
'79, at the end of my freshman year of college.) I remember paying $40 for
the deluxe boxed set a few years later, after a lot of scrimping and saving.
That seemed pricey to me back then, and I don't buy many books at that price
today, either.

Though remember that the crazy prices of RQ3 played a significant part in
killing the game, at least in the UK market.

Back in 1981 I was able to buy the RQ2 box with saved allowance for (I
think) £10. RQ3 came along and cost about £40, completely forcing the game
out of my reach, and pretty much every kid's reach. It took a long time
before that cost and the dreadful initial supplements damage was repaired.

My copy of RQ1 has the Chaosium "Other Products" printed on the back page.
RuneQuest is listed as $8. (WBRM is $10).

Jeff and I have a large number of people to thank for all of their magnificent
work on the Sartar Kingdom of Heroes book. In particular, since I worked with
them directly and very recently, I thought I would start with the artists,
cartographers, and graphics crew. Under Simon Bray and Jeff's aegis we have more
new art for this book than any other Gloranthan book published, even the
Gloranthan classics. The artists have collectively done an amazing job of
bringing Glorantha alive through their copious number of illustrations. Both
veteran and brand new artists, Simon, Manoel, Regis, Jed, Dan, Mike, Juha, and
several King of Dragon Pass artists all came up trumps.

Our cartographers (Pearce and Driver) brought artistry and Consistency to the
maps we have included. We think you will enjoy having color maps of the regions
and well detailed city/town maps of many of the places your characters can visit
as they adventure. We've also had the good fortune of having the runes
categorized and described more graphically than ever previously done. Matthew
Cole, who also helped flesh out (literally) the character sheets has earned our
many thanks as well.

With all these experts sending me hundreds of Megabytes of files I found myself
having a hard time getting the layout done. I kept reading maps, marvelling at
images and figuring out what tattoos might end up on the character sheets. I
hope you'll like the layout, it's a departure from the layout Issaries used and
much closer to what I did for the Gloranthan Classics.

Jeff and I have many more people to thank as well, but I wanted to start with
the production crew. Five Stars, gentlemen!

Hey all,

Sorry for bothering you, but Jeff recommended on RPG.net that I ask this
question here. Is there anyone going to Dragonmeet who would be prepared to pick
up a pre-ordered copy of Sartar and post it down to me in Devon, please?
Obviously I'd pay for any P&P and time spent via Paypal.

cheers!
Colin

Ah yes, forgot the most important tip.

If you value computer performance, do NOT turn all of the images on at once.
Nor should you check the top level folder as "on", since this also turns all
of the images on at once.

If you do so, you have to wait for nearly every image to download from the
internet before you computer becomes functional again. Better to do this in
small batches. Besides, the images are all overlapping, you probably won't
get much out of seeing them all at once.

Speaking of maps, here is another Google Earth file...

I have made a half scale mapping of Genertela on Google Earth and centered
it in the Pacific again. This should reduce the measurement distortion,
although you did need to multiple any measurement you get by two.

What is this set of maps? It is every map I could find online, overlapping
and matched in scale. To see the source of the map, open the item for
editing and check the link to see the originating URL.

Incomplete listing: All Mongoose Publishing 2nd Age maps. Maps posted on
Glorantha.com. Maps posted on Wesley's Glorantha Site. A few maps taken from
online PDFs on the Chaos Society website (these are bundled in the file,
instead of linking directly. See notes attached to each file in Google
Earth).

Tips for use:

    - Remember that this is half of the canonical scale to reduce distortion
from mapping a flat world onto a sphere.
    - Turn items on and off by checking the box in the Left Panel.
    - Some areas (Dragon Pass) have multiple maps that you show one at a time
    by selecting from a sub-folder.
    - You can control the transparency of an image by clicking on it in the
Left Panel and using the transparency slider at the bottom of the Panel.
    - If the maps are not stacked in the order you prefer, you can change
this: Open a map for editing, click on the "Location" tab. Change the "Draw
Order". Higher draw order is drawn on top of lower draw ordered images.
    - If you add maps from your own files that are not online, you should NOT
share the file, since you are breaching copyright.
    - If you find a map in this collection that should not be online, contact
the hosting party. When they take the map offline it will no longer display
    here (or anywhere).
    - Feel free to use placemarks and other tools in Google Earth to add your
own usability to the map set.

If this interests you, please download Google Earth from
http://earth.google.com and then get the file I created from the
WorldofGlorantha yahoo group files.
