QUADATHLON #1

Group the following scrambled words into four categories containing three
items each. Devise a name for each of the categories, and fit those names
into the crossword puzzle. Then, take the letters from the specially
marked squares in the crossword puzzle, and unscramble each set of letters
to make a word that fits in the puzzle's question. The letters in squares
marked with an asterisk, '*', belong to both the {a} and {b} groups of
letters.
