Subject: An end of year note...backing up your data
windopaene
Offline Offline

Just a brief note here to explain where your data is, and what you
might want to do to make sure you have a safe backup copy before you
archive the year. The current data is held in a file called
"Gamelog.cds" and should be in the same folder you have the
application stored. You can easily copy this using Windows Explorer.
This is never a bad idea.

Choosing File | Archive Year... will allow you to save the current
data into a new file, which in this case will be titled
"Gamelog2003.cds". It will then clear out all of the data, allowing
you to enter next year's games, resetting all of the statistics.

Remember that if you are going to create a 5 and 10 list, or a
December games played report, you will want to do that BEFORE
archiving the existing year.

Best wishes for a great year of gaming in 2004.

I put that in quotations, as I've only found one bug so far, but as
it's nearing the end of the month, and I'm thinking some of you will
be doing Monthly Games Played reports, I thought I'd share what NOT
to do.

If you click on the Report menu item, and then the dialog comes up
asking which month to report on and let's say you choose the wrong
month. The big form comes up, you realize that it's the wrong month,
and hit cancel. You then choose the menu item again and choose the
correct month. BAM! Error. And then I'm pretty sure there is nothing
to do but restart the application. This will be fixed in the next version.

And speaking of the next version, I'd be interested to hear of any
features/enhancements you'd like to see.

Subject: Handy tip for "Advanced" users - Reordering records within a date
windopaene
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

Okay, here's something you may need at some point. If you forget to
put in a game, and then want to get it in later, you will notice that
if you put in the date, it will sort within other records for that
date, but it will be at the end of the previously entered game entries
for that date. So if you are the anal-retentive / obsessive-compulsive
type, like me, you want to get it in its correct position. Currently
there is only one way to do this.

It requires that you run the GameLogger from a shortcut. Select the
shortcut, and right-click to bring up the properties window. In the
dialog box where it shows the Target, add the word debug to the entry.
Example: L:\Projects\Glog\Glog6\GameLogger.exe debug

Now when you run the program from this shortcut, you will see an
additional field next to the date field. This field contains an
integer value which serves as an ID number, and orders the records
within a given date.

Now this "feature" was never really intended for general use, and so
you could mess up your data a bit if you don't take care entering
these numbers. Also, I never took the proper precautions to make the
ID routine all that solid, so if you manually enter numbers, the
program won't know about them, and so a subsequent insert will reuse
an existing number. So if you do edit records using these numbers,
it's best to exit the program after doing so, so that subsequent
inserts will get the proper number, (the program only checks for what
number to start using when it starts up).

I will have some other more transparent method of dealing with this in
a subsequent release, but that won't be for a while, so this should
get you through until then.

Apologies to those who downloaded this and got the error. This new

there is no reason it should be a problem.

Arrgh. Good point, I had forgotten that I wasn't using that any more.

So if you are a new joinee, the Glogger.zip file is the one you want
to get. Again, for those that had downloaded and installed the version
0.9 files, see my previous message for what to do, (you will only need
the application only file and the Update utility).

Here's the deal. If you haven't yet downloaded the Version 0.9.0.1
files, you can either wait til Thursday for me to build a full install
zip file, or download that version, unzip it, enter at least one game,
THEN follow the procedure below for upgrading. If you already have the
first version running, here's what to do.

Download the GameLogger App Version1.zip file, and download the
GloggerUpdater.Zip file. Unzip them to your GameLogger folder. Run the
Upgrade Utility. This will convert any records you have with integer
ratings into the new decimal format. Now you can run the GameLogger as
you always have.

As I mentioned in my email the other day, the changes are decimal
ratings, an edit warning, and I did get in the enhancements to the
Monthly reports, as it will now pull all of the comments entered for
each instance of a game, and present these to you so you can reflect
on them before adding the summary info you want.

As always, I thank you all for trying/using the Game Logger, and hope
it meets your needs. Any problems or enhancement ideas, send them to
me here or through email and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks,

Brad

I've gotten in the floating point ratings, and I have built a utility
to update your existing data, (probably a bigger issue for me with
nearly two years data than for you, but...), and I'm looking at adding
the game comments to the monthly report screen so you can better
comment on your plays of a given game for a given month. I'm not sure
whether or not this will get in, really depends on how big of a
problem it is. Per Josh's request, I've added an "Edit Warning", so
that you won't inadvertantly change an existing records information.
As I find this incredibly irritating, there are ways to turn it off
after you see it once. There is one small "bug" in this
implementation, and that has to do with the Date/Time picker used to
enter the date. As this is one of the squirrliest controls ever to
come out of Redmond, I can't get a good handle on controlling it's
behavior, so if THAT is the field you change inadvertantly, it will
ask you the question twice, AND if you say No, it will not set it back
to the proper date, (though the underlying data will not change). I
spent about three hours trying a myriad of things, and then finally
threw up my hands. You will have to learn to live with that. Anyway,
it's gamenight tonight, so I won't likely get back to work on it
tonight, so I probably won't have the update ready tonight. I'd say
look for it on Wednesday.

Thanks

Okay, any more feedback? One person emailed me some thoughts, (too
easy to edit an existing record, no fractional ratings, screwyness
when there's not enough data for the "Best at/Worst at" info), but
everyone else has been silent. I guess it's just that good!

Anyway, I'm going to be doing a final release, which should you choose
to download it, will give you the fractional ratings everyone seems to
want. In addition, there will be a tool to upgrade your existing
datafiles. The upgrade tools is finished, and seems to work just fine,
but I haven't yet gotten the application to play nice with the new
data field. Should be done either this weekend, or early next week. So
if there is anything you want me to consider adding in, now would be a
good time to tell me.

The one other thing I'm planning on adding in is a bit more info in
the monthly games played report, (number of games, unique games, new
games), and more information about the games themselves, (the comments
field from the instances of each game visible while creating the
monthly games played report).

So let me know.

Those of you who joined up to get the Sealed deck generator for
Netrunner on the Gattling Engine may want to change your settings for
this group. The reason being I'm about to release some new software,
(that has nothing to do with Netrunner), and I'm guessing that the
majority of messages that will be coming to the group will have
nothing to do with SDB for NR on the GE. So unless you are interested
in reading bug reports from my Game Logger application's users, you
may find the messages annoying.

I will always send messages regarding new versions to the list as
"Special Messages", so choosing that option would be a way to cut down
on irrelevant messages. You would then get messages if I release new
versions of BSWHelper or Game Logger, but it would certainly be better
than having to delete email after email about the lack of fractional
ratings in the Game Logger.

Thanks

So I added in some code to ensure that in a limited booster there will

Merci to Topaze for giving me the lowdown.

Topaze pointed out that the distributions and numbers of cards in the

Sorry about that.

Though in the future, if you see a bug like this, please post a

Still some problems it appears, though I can't see what it is. Perhaps
I didn't get the right files built or something, as mine handles Jack

out how the engine wants the files named in order to use them. There
was also a message about certain cards having changed, so I need to
get those changes in if they affect this, (which I'm guessing they
do). So I should have something up later today.

Well, as I mentioned, this newest build really doesn't address your

It appeared there was an error with the file I put up yesterday, in
that the Generate Deck tab wasn't the tab that was selected
originally. While this shouldn't have caused any problems, it looked
bad. Also, I put in a little error handling code to try and diagnose
Alex's problem. After reading his message again, I don't think it will
have that effect, but it will be good to have for the future.

Do you get the dialog boxes asking for a deck name and a deck description?

If not it is even more strange, as only one thing happens between
clicking the button and getting the dialogs, and that is the creation
and/or clearing of a StringList, of which there are a bunch already.
So creating one more shouldn't be an issue.

Hmmm, that sucks. I left the files on my laptop, which I left at work,
so I won't be able to do anything about it until the morning. Sorry

So this WAS a group for some really neat software I had for playing
boardgames online. Unfortunately, it never really worked perfectly,
and others, (such as Brettspielwelt), do it so much better than I can.
So now it's a group for downloading my gaming related software,
posting bug reports and feature requests, and the like.

The only programs that are here now, or will be soon, are the
BSWHelper application, and my newest creation, the Deckmaker sealed
Netrunner deck generator for use with the gatlingEngine at
www.ccgworkshop.com.

Coming soon will be my GameLogger application, for keeping a games
played log.
