some "modern" boardgaming in the Balto-to-NoVa metro area
[ now with added areas of Virginia and Pennsylvania ]

Usual Full Disclosure and OPT-OUT Directions
The writer maintains a list of email addresses that reach
over 300 people who play 'sociable strategy' games (also
called 'German-style', or 'Euro-', or 'designer', or 'modern'
boardgames) in the Balto-DC-NoVa metro megalopolis. To
minimize spamming, the list is used only in bcc, and only to
announce upcoming gaming get-togethers (definite, or being
planned). If you want an address added to the list, send an
email from that address to salvatore_b@...,
saying "add me" (but of course remove the spam foiler). If
you are receiving more copies of such messages than you would
like to, please inform the writer (at the same address) about
email addresses that you would like to get removed from the list.

Don't forget to schedule a FedGovPlayDay (Monday, Oct.9)
or a FifthDay (Sunday, Oct.29 or Monday, Oct.30) event!

i'm updating this push too often -- from now on, if you send in a
correction, don't expect to see it before the next month's issue.

New listing: miniatures group every other Friday night in
Beltsville -- see the MD non-GCoM section.

New special event, #6.5, "The Wake" -- October 28.

Annapolis session now on second rather than third Saturdays.

Please note, right after the Special Events section, a
"call to arms" for local wargamers (one listing added)
and two sessions for longer non-combat boardgames.

Dawn Patrol is moving from Germantown (MD) to Falls Church
(NoVa), but continuing on Sundays, probably 1pm--6pm; get
in touch with salvatore_b@... (but of
course remove the spam foiler) for contact info.

In the Special Events section, there's info
on The Wake; on WAM V; on TerpCon (updated); and more.

A CALL TO ARMS!
I know many wargamers in the NoVa area, where i lived back when
i was primarily a wargamer, some 20 years ago, and several of
them are in the bcc for the monthly push you are currently
reading. The DC and NoVa Wargaming Meetups are not very active,
as far as i can tell, so i am offering this push as a clearing-
house and a matching venue and as a supplement for the Meetups
-- anyone who wants to start or advertise a wargaming session,
or who is looking for opponents, or who knows someone who fits
either of those descriptions, please feel free to send me the
relevant info and i will post it here. As always:

So did the British hold? What became of Pip the dog?

Sorry I had to leave early - had to get home to take over childcare.

Thanks for the game Bill! It was great to see you again!

If you missed our meet on Friday 29 Sept had a great game of Rokes
Drift using 15mm figures. Bill ran the game using a unique system of
zones, so instead of measuring all the figures, you just moved figures
by zone. Very fast and had a fun time. All the players were new to
the system but was easy to learn and fun. The Zulus were the winners
this time, just say the dice was on their side. Also played a Zombie
board game (I love zombies) and a card game (not collectible). If
anybody wants to fill in the details please feel free.

I will be trying to see if we can get the Hall for Friday, Oct 13th so
I will let you know.

Just a reminder that the HMGS convention "FALL IN" is scheduled for
10 - 12 November at the Eisenhower Hotel, Conference Center and
Resort, Convention Hotel 800-776-8349 in Gettysburg. Signup and event
list is at www.fall-in.org so signup and get in that much cheaper (why
pay door rates?) Also Oct 12 is the cutoff to run games and even if
not historical run a game anyway, good practice for other conventions.
I know when I see a Battletech or Games Workshop game it is always
full.

I am planning of staying for the weekend and just game away. I am
hosting a game on Friday of Fistful of TOWS and hitting the flea
market. Might even take advantage of the in-door pool, hmmm.

Let me know if you going we can get a WTTG game there going.

I'm a little confused now, is the Oct. 6th date (tomorrow) still a go, or are
you pushing it back to Oct 13th?
Of course if you're trying to run two weeks back to back that would be fine too.

I can fill in the gaps on the boardgames played on Sept. 29th:

The non-collectible card game was Oriente, themed on fuedal Japan with
a strong emphasis on social castes. Your basic choices are to attack
your neighbor or fullfill your destiny based on your caste. The
interesting dyanmic is that your caste can change rapidly.

The zombie board game was Mall of Horror (a personal favorite). I
usually describe it as a social engineering and voting game. Its not
your typical zombie killing dice fest - basically you are trying to
survive in a mall under seige by zombies. When the zombie attack a
store occupied by humans, those players with survivors inside get to
vote amongst themselves who will get eaten, resulting in lots of
cajoling, sometimes begging, and plenty of back-stabbing.

See you all next time!

Interesting!

Anyone with business experience want to comment on the price? I'm
having a hard time seeing how it could be worth 50K.

I don't want to get into a bashing session; but from a business sense the value
of a company is derived from it's assets and reputation/customer base that will
transfer with the sale of the company.

Since the building was leased, the only assets is the store inventory and I have
a hard time believing that is even half of the offering price.
IMHO, the reputation/customer base is actually a negative value rather than a
positive one. Not being there a lot, I would think discipline and order would
have to start very strong with anyone who would be interested in taking over
Game Haven. Their reputation is poor and the clients (customers) have seem to be
less than stellar. They got kicked out of the first strip mall they were in, to
the point that the landlord decided he will never lease to a hobby/game store
again.
The fact that they needed to have a fund raiser to replace the chairs that were
broken or destroyed during 'normal game play' is a little concerning too.

If someone was going to take over this operation, my advise would be to look at
the wholesale value (not retail) of the inventory on hand, ask for a significant
discount from that and it would be my bottom line.
Personally I would think you would do better finding another location and
certainly change the name (so there is no reason to pay for the 'rights' of the
business).

That would be my advice anyway,
Andrew

I would like to help out too. I still believe we should look at the
possibility of holding an official National Games Week event, either
as an additional event, or as the day-con you plan to do. Nov. 19-25
is the week, and the NGW website has info and sponsor lists.

NationalGamesWeek.net is the site. Its free. We could join up, get
their official invitations and host kits, tips on planning,
posters/banners, etc.

I mentioned a few months ago about joining the VFW. The VFW has a
Men's and Ladies auxiliary where blood relatives of those who service
can join. So if your Dad or Grandfather, Uncle was in the service all
you need is a copy of their DD-214 (they will know). With that copy
you can join the auxiliary's will the same benefits so let me know if
you are interested.

of course, if you are a veteran please join.

I was searching the webs wargame clubs seeing how our fellow wargaming

They are the TIN SOLDIERS OF ANTWERP club out of Belgium but check out

Even a bar in the back for beer on tap!!

After drooling through their webpage I just starting thinking if we
could do something like that here in the Winchester area??? (I now
hear "who's we???".....) Just putting it out there if there would be
any interest or thoughts, feasibility on such a project.

There is a group that have a club house that meet just north of Hagerstown.
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Mid-atlanticgamers/

I think the biggest problem you have with this direction is how high the dues
would have to be and getting a large enough number of members to pay.
That and what to do if somewhere down the line members stop paying.
