This past Saturday I was able to play RAF2 2-player FtF. Fun game. Although I
am still a Burning Blue fan, I think the scale of RAF2 is a little easier to
play enough of the campaign so as to see the decisions that the commanders had
to make as far as attrition. We played 6 hours and were able to complete 3 days
(12 raids).

Has anyone played the VASSAL modules for this? Can it be played 2-player with
one of those modules?

Hi,

I've always been addicted to Wargames (I started with Raid back in S&T 77 if I
remember rightly) and in the past was located near other opponents.

However I'm now in a place where opponents are harder to find, but it hasn't
stopped me buying games and of course never getting around to play them.

So I'm looking for opponents who are interested in playing one of the games I
have
(http://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/Greygor69?own=1&subtype=boardgame&\
ff=1) and can play at a mutually agreeable times.

I'm located in Europe (GMT +1) and find Monday Evenings (19:00 to 00:00) or
Saturday/Sunday Daytimes (08:00 - 19:00) the most convenient. But I have a
certain amount of flexibility.

Please note, whichever game you pick to play me at you may as well consider it
is my first time playing it

I'm looking for a couple of folks to playtest the MUSTANGS VASSAL module with
me. Any takers?

I am also looking for VASSAL opponents.

I cannot do PBEM ... there is something about it that takes all the fun out of
gaming for me. It just fills like a homework assignment.

However, I do enjoy playing games via VASSAL in real-time (also known as Virtual
Face-to-Face or vFtF). I like to use some kind of VOIP application (SKYPE,
YAHOO IM with VOICE, or VENTRILO - GMT has a server account the let people use
for free)

Anyway, I would really like to play WHITE STAR RISING, MUSTANGS, FIRES OF
MIDWAY, LOCK N LOAD, or SQUAD LEADER via VASSAL. Any takers?

My choice for gaming times are (all times Mountain) :
   Saturday 7-10a, 9:30-11:30p
   Sunday 7-10a, 3-5p

anyone interested in trying regular (aka repeating) meetup times with themed
play? via vassal with skype or ventrilo?

For example 1st weekend (F or 1), 2nd Weekend (S or 2), 3rd weekend (T or 3),
4th weekend (4 or F or free choice), 5th weekend (free choice) ...

For the first weekend of each month, players are encouraged to suggest games
whose title starts with F or 1 or the subject matter of the game starts with a F
or 1... possible candidates might be:

   Flying Colors
   Band of Heroes (101st Airborne)
   Screaming Eagles in Holland
   Wilderness War (French-Indian wars)
  ...

start times seem to be the hardest thing to coordinate with a big group like
this. maybe we could start out with a couple of slots and pare it down as the
groups' preferences become apparent?
Maybe 9 am EST and/or 9pm EST on Saturday and/or Sunday for starters? we could
use the group's wiki page for game proposals / signups.

anyone interested in giving it a try?

I'm in a horrible time zone here in Aus (5 hours behind California) but I'm up
for it. I'd almost forgotten
I'd subscribed to this group and I think it's time to resurrect it and start
some things happening.

I've posted two themed virtual events for next week on the vEvents page
<http://virtualwargamer.wikidot.com/vEvents> on the website
<http://www.virtualwargamer.org>
CDG Midnight Madness and Naval Midnight Madness

Initially set for midnight Eastern Standard Time, hopefully this will be
workable for those on the west coast of the United States as well as
Australia, and Asia.

From the site statistics for visits, it seems like 15:00 EST may work
well for US east coast and midwest as well as most of Europe. Any
opinions on that?

What other themes would y'all suggest we use in the future. The main
goal here is to begin a repeating pattern that people can begin to rely
on and as the number of participants increase the likelihood of everyone
getting into a game that matches their preferences should increase as
well.

In a few weeks I am running a refereed game of Operation Crusader by GDW

The scenario is Battleaxe and requires 2 Allied and 3 or 4 Axis players.
The game length is 3 days with 1 hour turns.

Two players have already shown interest, anyone else?

Played a few games live on VASSAL but frankly I really don't like it all that
much. I work all day on a computer and spending more hours staring at computer
screen is not appealing. So I have played a number of games using the actual
boards & counters via SKYPE. Basically if you go slowly and carefully describe
your moves to your opponent it works very well. The one thing you really need to
do is use the honor system for die rolls & chit draws etc, but I have never had
a problem with this. I suppose you could use a die roller, but I would much
rather roll the actual dice and trust the other guy. In fact the only problem I
have had is when I get some incredible roll and am tempted to report something
worse since I worry whether my opponent is going to believe it. But you just go
ahead and report the good and the bad and it all just seems to work. Besides, I
think a die roller would slow things down. I think it would work well on
Ventrillo, but if you do it on Skype you can use the screen to display your
opponent so it is as close to FtF as you can get. Thus far I have played SPI's
Cedar Mountain, several games out of the American Rev battle series, Battle
above the clouds and ASL. Of course you have to make sure that the games stay in
synch and if you do multiple sessions you have to make sure you keep the game in
progress someplace safe. As long as there aren't too many counters involved it
works. I think it could be made to work with CDGs, but you would have to have
one player manage the deck and display the other players cards to him on the
camera, or I suppose you could use ACTs to draw the hands. Anyway it has a few
things to be sorted out, but it does work.

Yes

It says Vassal wargamers but it can be used for any type of online
game meetup.. I know there are quite a few online engines. I prefer
the group to be used for wargames to keep the group from getting too
much chatter.

Been getting a little more spam ...

if you see a message from the group (or maybe just me) telling you that you are
on probation. Just post a message to the group explaining you gaming
hopes/fears/wishes.

My goal is not to ban any legitimate wargamers from the group - but I think I
owe it to the membership not to allow this group to turn into another source for
spam.

Good anti-spam method, and gets lurkers like me to speak up.
Haven't been doing much gaming lately, my retro-computer club has been taking my spare-spare time. :)
If you don't mind I'll lurk some more until I get back to it.

Thanks,
B

I guess the group post about probation was poorly written.

All members when you join have their posts monitored until I see a post (or two)
which shows me that the "new" member isn't just going to spam the bejeebers out
of the group.

Lurking is perfectly acceptable!! I'm a lurker too.

Anyway. Sorry for the poorly worded post. The wording in the probation email
is kinda tactless. I posted to the group in hopes that if the source of the
posts which I thought were spam was really just a wargamer that they realized
why I was/am as anal as I was/am.

Always up for games of Paths of Glory, Shifting Sands, Up Front & Manifest Destiny (amongst others) and would like to learn Here I Stand, 30 years War and The Republic of Rome (just agreed a trade for the valley games reprint of that)
