There is a WWII version of the Too Fat Lardies WWI rules Through the Mud and The
Blood in playtesting right now. I've been running it and so far am pretty happy
with its ability to handle a fair number of troops and still play smoothly and
in an evening.
TFL also has the Troops, Weapons and Tactics rules, which are aimed at a platoon
a side or so, and are sort of a more detailed cross between I Ain't Been Shot,
Mum! and Through the Mud and Blood.

Also worth a look are the Blood, Sweat and Tears rules that are in testing right
now available here:
http://lasthussar.wordpress.com/2009/03/29/work-in-progress-world-war-2-rules/

He has some very interesting ideas, I particularly like the delayed fire
resolution.

I also like Stargrunt II, which makes a very good WWII game with a few minor
modifications, also free. And Fast And Dirty, which appears to be a streamlined
effort at achieving the same results as Stargrunt II, another free set easily
adapted to WWII.

I like Nuts!, but haven't seen the new version yet. Knowing that it is based on
Chain Reaction 3 makes me a little worried about it, as I found CR-3 to be far
too bloody. We joked that Ed could change the name of his company from Two Hour
Wargames to 15 Minute Wargames after we played CR-3 a couple times ;)

And if your willing to go up a notch or two, I think Crossfire is one of the
best tactical infantry rules out there, and have seen it beautifully done in
28mm, though it probably would require more figs.

I've not played the Iron Ivan DHCF7B rules, but I've consistently heard good
things about them. One of the guys in my group has them and eventually we will
get it on the table.

A: I use the infantry as SS. Sometimes I paint the pants camo to make
them SS. Mix them with figures with smocks and it looks good.

B: The uniforms are different. The pockets are the main give away.
Each one in the store should be marked in the singles. It will either
have a 42 or 43 in the title or in the description.
basically the 42 uniform is for D-day and you can use both for the
fall 44 and till the end of the war.

C: depends.
Some people argue that why is there a para 42 with a BAR? They didn't
drop with them.
Others, okay but they used them after.
You can do as the official book says, but as Jim says does not mean
that is what they carried in the field.
Most do a squad with 2 smg's, a support weapon and rifles.
Mix and match as you like. The squad leaders can have rifles or
carbines also, etc etc.
If you want official sometimes I do a google search for something
like, german rifle squad 1944, and usually find something that helps.
or the game you are playing might have the information you need.

And theres always, are you fielding a squad that is a man or 2 short,
or now has two BAR gunners, because this is how they are at this point
in their war.

Hope that helps

                   A) I frequently use "Heer" as "SS" and vice versa (especially
the ones with smocks!).

B) I believe that the main difference is color (42 is "tan", 43 is "olive
drab")...but I think that the 42 also has "patches" on the knees and elbows for
re-enforcement.  Bottom-line. ..I mix them. :)

C) check out the "bayonet strength" website for TO&E...but remember that what
was on the TO&E isn't what was found in the field.  I have a good friend who has
been "interviewing" many WW2 veterans and the one tidbit that he found out was
that troops would commonly "acquire" additional support weapons whenever
possible (especially the US Airborne troops!).  I recommend that you give them
what the rules say (I believe that you were going to get Disposable
Heroes)...and alter it on a scenario-basis.

Cheers,

OK I've got several questions I need help with.

A: Is there any difference between the German Heer uniform and the SS uniform
other than color and the helmet cover? I'm wondering If I could use some
regular infantry figures as SS if I paint them up that way.

B: What is the difference, other than color, between the U.S. airborne 42
uniform vs. the 43 uniform? When looking on the VFM webstore when the figures
aren't labeled as 43 or 42 I can't tell which uniform they have on and so am
unsure of what to buy.

C: What was the armament of an airborne squad? How many SMGs BARs and LMGs in a
squad and can the LMG figure be used as 42 or 43 uniform?

Philip,

I'm glad that you found the "reviews" helpful...but remember that they're just
my opinion.  I still think that the best thing to do is to try each set at a
convention!  This gives you a chance to play without shelling out any money.

  WRT, anti-tank guns...this is a tough one!  I know that "Gas.o.line" makes
some...but they're not cheap!  They're made for "scale modelers" and have LOTS
of detail (which can be a BAD thing for wargamers...as this typically means lots
of "fiddly" parts).

There was a RUMOR that someone in this Yahoo Group was making a PaK40.  In
fact I think that there are some work-in-progress pictures in the Photos
section.  However, I haven't heard anything lately.  (look in Burkhard's
photos...he's got GREAT paint jobs too!).

I keep hoping that Tamiya will do some in their 1/48 scale line.  I've seen
some ATGs from other companies...but don't care for them much (e.g Artizan's is
U-G-L-Y...IMHO ).  That said, one possibility is the 1/56 line by Company B.
Also, take a look at this link...as the guys form JTFM (1/56 scale) put together
a nich group of links...http://www.diewaffenkammer.com/links.html.

  Cheers,

- Jim

Well from this post it pretty much seems Battleground is out
and it sounds like Disposable Heroes is the way to go because the group I play
with can usually only get together rarely and when we do it's often different
people that can make it each time so I need rules that can be taught relatively
quickly and are fast and fun to play.  I personally like detailed rules but they
are not very practical as far as getting a game together.  The "I ain't been
shot" rules also sound interesting since we recently tried Field of Battle for
our Napoleonics and we really liked the card based system it uses.  Thanks for
the help, now I need to drive to the hobby shop tomorrow and pick up the paints
I need and get started on assembling some forces.

Oh, one more question for you guys, since VCF doesn't make AT guns what
manufacturer would make these and reasonably match VCF in scale?

Phillip,

I meant to reply to your questions earilier..but work (and life in general)
has been B-U-S-Y!

Anyway, I think that Larry has excellent answers to most of your questions.

I agree whole-heartedly with his opinons on  vehicles.  While there are a lot
more 1/56 scale resin vehicles available... I think that they look too small
(especially with the awesome Victory Force Miniatures!) ...IMHO.

WRT, Disposable Heroes...I like their rules a lot.  They are starting to get a
pretty good "following" at the HMGS-East conventions.  I used them for several
games at my local club...but couldn't "convert" anyone.  They've been using
Battleground WW2 for years...and are hesitant to change.  Here's a few words
about each set...

Battleground WW2: Very detailed set of rules that have been out for many years.
I think that you will probably be able to find people to play these at most
cons.  The "downside" is that the rules don't "scale" very well.  In fact, the
MOST that I'd recommend for a game is a platoon and 2-3 vehicles per side....and
that is for an experienced group!  Since these rules are so detailed...it takes
a while to learn the "ins and outs" (especially for vehicles).

Disposable Heroes: Excellent set of rules that are quick to learn and fast to
play.  They lack the "detail" that you will find in BGWW2 (the biggest being
sighting!).  However, the play FAST and, IMHO, yield "realistic" results (i.e.
they reward following the tactics of the "army" you're using!). Since they are
so fast to play, they scale up to large games very well (I ran a game with a
reenforced US rifle company attacking a "depleted" German company...with 5 US
tanks and 2 tanks and 2 guns on the German side.  This was run in a 4-hour slot
at a con...and included teaching the rules!

Other sets to consider....

I Ain't Been Shot, Mum (by Two Fat Lardies): a VERY fun set of rules!  These are
reasonable quick to learn...and have about as much detail as DH.  HOwever,
instead of a "u-Go-I-Go" game like DH...these are "card-driven initiative".
This makes for a fun game as you're not sure when (or IF!) you're unit's card
will come up.

Force on Force (by Ambush Alley Games):  These are a new set of rules that have
the advantage of being usable for WW2 to the current day!  I've only played them
a couple of times...but I like them (I _love_ their "original" set Ambush
Alley...but these are for assymetric warfare..."regulars " vs. "insurgents" ).

Well, for anyone that made it this far...thanks for reading!

  Good gaming,

- Jim

My local gaming crowd has been using BattleGround: WW2 for over 10

years now and still like a *lot*. While there hasn't been any new

development on it for almost that long, the rules *are* now for sale

in PDF-download form.

Well, lots of folks have different opinions. My group is all for 1:48

- 1:50. IMO, 1:56 look too small and 1:60 is *tiny*. YMMV... :)

About a year ago, WallyWorld carried some amazingly detailed and

*cheap* die-cast/plastic 1:48 vehicles. Back then they ran around $5 -

$7. Utterly, amazingly cheap! While they're now out of production, you

can still find them on the web... and they're still a good value at

the new prices (usually $15 - $25). Sample link: <http://preview. tinyurl.com/

I guess the best thing is to have something you like to play.
To have too much detail in rules is not a bad thing, you can always
cut out rules.
For example, In battleground when some one is hit you rill to see what
happens, KIA, heavy wound, light wound moral check, etc.
Some people will simply play that if the figure is heavy wounded or
fail moral check they are out of the game because they want a quicker
game.
Some skip sight checks and assume if in line of sight they can be seen.

I will admit Advanced Squad Leader was a game where i rounded the
corners to make it work when I was young.

I played Panzer Blitz when I was around 7, I just moved the little
counters around and rolled a dice. High number and they were
destroyed, low number miss. Cant be any simpler than that.

I take a look into battleground.  Too bad I didn't get into this when Wal-mart
was selling those.  I can find some marders still out there (I bought two) but
that's about it.  I'll keep looking though, thanks for the help.

Phillip,

I meant to reply to your questions earilier..but work (and life in general)
has been B-U-S-Y!

Anyway, I think that Larry has excellent answers to most of your questions.

I agree whole-heartedly with his opinons on  vehicles.  While there are a lot
more 1/56 scale resin vehicles available...I think that they look too small
(especially with the awesome Victory Force Miniatures!)...IMHO.

WRT, Disposable Heroes...I like their rules a lot.  They are starting to get a

But yes I do plan on adding to them.

yes. Just too many problems happened this summer and still have
another surgery to go through in November.

But yes I do plan on adding to them.

I am very far behind this year.

I may rethink, restart and redo the to do list

Seems all ok to me. Out of curiosity, are you going to add to the WWII Russians
or Brits range?

Looks like the site has been moved.
Everything seems to be working as before.
Nothing looks different.
Using an upgraded miva merchant so will need to look in it and see if
there are any added features.
Hoping there are some such as the ability to have you enter your CC
security code and coupons.
If not I will see about adding them.

If anyone has any problems on the site let me know.
Looks like the Security certificate transfered.
let me know if you get an error on it when you sign in on the store.

Those that get a discount should have transfered, let me know if that
is not working for you.

There are a couple of "problem areas".  For example, the "names" of the Brit

I am changing a few things around and am now putting the
products in a

column of 3 on each page.

Please go to the victory store and check out the products and let me

know what your think.

Does it help? before it was only one column running down the page.

Thanks
I am working on that now.
seems as though everything transfered but in a different order. I hope
it didn't do that to all the products and put them out of order or in
different categories
Oh the joys of the internet.

I am just thankful that the new host did all the transferring and and
stuff so I have to do is little things like recreate the mail boxes
and fix the order of things.

The bad thing is all the previous orders are gone.
This is not a problem since I have invoiced them and was going to
remove them. But if there was an order form this morning I did not see
it is gone now.
And will have to be placed again.

Sorry about that.
I looked into it and think I know what happened.
The transfer happened last week and just went live today.
I think you joined after the transfer.
You account is not in the new system. It was deleted in the old. The
best thing to do is create a new account.
Do this. Let me know at this email address contactus@...
when you have done it then I will go in and put back in your discount.

I am sorry this happened, the last week or so in doing this change has
been difficult when dealing with the different parties involved.
Thank you
James Bland

Anyone else who made an account in the last week will also need to go
in and create the account again.

I would suggest not ordering during this time

James,

They overcharged you by 21x!!  Who are they?  With a business model like that,
I want to buy some of their stock!

Sorry to hear about the problems.  Hopefully it will be resolved soon.
