Porter Square Gaming Hi Everybody...

Gaming should not stop you from voting! Especially if you have are
voting for the same candidate I am. Having said that, voting should not
stop you from gaming! We will have the TV on (and on mute) for the
duration of the result show so you can still stay on the know and
celebrate/mope accordingly.

Once again, this TUESDAY, there's board gaming at my house (335 Highland
Ave Apt 2, Somerville) - about a 7 minute walk from either Davis Square
T stop or Porter Square T. The fun starts at 7:00 and typically ends
around 11:00 or so. Everyone is welcome to come (including newcomers and
friends), but PLEASE E-mail RSVP so I get an idea on the person count.

Felix

We'll have the details available soon. Just ironing out some technical details
on the website and then we'll have all the info available, as well as starting

Note: this is NOT a gaming event. But we have regular game days here and
some people on the list may be interested.

One of our traditions continues: Thanksgiving at The Buttery, our
celebration of the only national holiday dedicated to gluttony. As we
have said in the past, this is a Thanksgiving for orphans, or "for
people who have nowhere to go or don't want to go there". If you don't
have a place to celebrate the holiday, or you like the idea of
celebrating it with us, you are welcome. If you have a place to go but
know people who do not, please forward this invitation.

Thanksgiving is a bit different from our other large gatherings. You
need to let us know you are coming so we can plan. It's not a pure
potluck dinner; we ask everybody to bring a food or beverage but we
coordinate what people are bringing so we end up with a balanced meal
and don't have ten dishes of cranberry sauce. We do the turkey and
stuffing; everything else is up to the guests. For the last couple of
years I have used a Google Docs spreadsheet to keep track of who is
bringing what; once I know you are coming I will send you a link.

We'll open the doors at 3pm. (If you come earlier we'll put you to
work setting up.) We'll sit down to dinner somewhere around 4:30 or
5pm, depending on when the turkey is ready. We have two stoves with
ovens (kitchen and basement) available for baking or reheating your
dishes; the turkeys go in electric roasters so both ovens are
available. After we're done with our gluttony we usually sit around
and talk for a while, and it all ends somewhere between 9 and 10.

We're at 24 Kenwood St in Dorchester, just as we have been since 1988.
You can get directions at http://www.buttery.org/directions

If you would like to come, please contact me in advance! If you know
people who you think would enjoy Thanksgiving dinner here, feel free
to pass the invitation along to them. You can call or text me on the
phone (617-905-9126) or email me (mark@...). I need to know
how many people you are bringing (and if you are bringing children,
what ages they are) and what kind of dish you would like to bring. I
may have suggestions if there are categories that are undersubscribed.

Unity Games Etiquette - REVISED January 25, 2006

This is an auto-post... Please read carefully so that the UG list is a more
efficient place for both posters and readers.

The number of posts for the Unity Games list has grown rather substantially in
the past months and so here are a few tips to help those who feel a bit lost
under the weight of the emails.

1. When posting to the Unity Games list, try to keep your subject lines in tune
with the content of your message. If you reply to one email but the subject
starts to drift, please feel free to change the subject line to reflect the new
topic. This makes it much easier for those reading to filter on the subjects
that interest them most.

2. When posting to the Unity Games list, try to cut down on the unnecessary
quoted text (text from the person you are replying to). This is especially true
of the boiler-plate Unity Games material that is appended to every posted
message. It's hard to read these messages with lots of extra quoted text -
especially in digest mode. The number of messages has grown substantially
lately and not everyone can keep up - so please be judicious in cutting out text
in replies.

3. If the number of messages is getting to you (!!), feel free to go into digest
mode where you receive one message a couple times each day containing a digest
of all posts. You get the same information, but slightly delayed. There is
also web-based browsing of the group where you can read the messages online (and
get no emails). You can configure this at the Unity Games homepage (see below
for the link - use the Edit My Membership option from the UG homepage) or you
can send a message to Unity_Games-owner@yahoogroups.com and we can do it for
you. If you decided to stay in email mode, be aware that most good email
clients allow you to filter your incoming messages and file them away in a
folder different from your "inbox". You can easily search on the word
"[Unity_Games]" which appears in every message from the list and use that to
trigger storing your messages in a convenient folder for later viewing.

4. To help people filter on content that is most appropriate for them, please
use the following tags in your subject lines (the braces should be included to
make the tag stand-out for filtering):

[OT] - For posts which are off topic.
[SA] - For Session Announcements (the auto-poster uses "Reminder from the
Calendar of Unity_Games" as the first line).
[SR] - For Session Reports and games played during local Sessions.
[GR] - For Game Reviews.
[META] - for discussions on or about the UG list.

Posts without a tag will be for general game-related discussions, asking about
sessions, discussions of the big Unity Games days, etc. If you miss using a tag,
don't follow up the post with an apology - just let it slide and hopefully
anyone responding will add a tag if needed. Again, most general discussion can
go tag-less. This will go a long way to allowing people to filter on the UG
content. Remember, all UG posts will have the "[Unity_Games]" tag automatically
applied so these additional tags are used to filter and sort within Unity Games
content.

5. Speaking of off-topic posts... Please try to keep these to a minimum.
General game discussion is fine but the list has gotten large enough that
off-topic comments (even if short) can overpower and bury the reader as they
might not have time to read everything. I've gotten emails from people who have
missed event announcements buried around lots of off-topic or only marginally
game related postings. Posting short semi-off-topic or humorous follow-ups to
messages is perfectly fine - just cut down on the original post as much as
possible to keep the read-time short for others.

6. We do allow occasional game-related for-sale or for-trade messages as well.
These should be only for personal trade/sell game-related items and should not
be too frequent - do not flood the list with personal sales emails. If you have
more than one item for sale/trade, consider posting them together in a single
discrete email. Do not conduct your sales on the UG list - after the initial
post please keep all excahnges/haggles off-list in private email. Basically, a
good use of this is when someone wants to clean out thier closet and sell/trade
games to local friends to save on shipping, hassle, etc. Mentioning bargains
found at a store you have no affiliation with is fine (and encouraged!). We
currently do not allow any auctions on this forum (either direct auctions or
links to auctions at another site like ebay) and we do not allow posts from
commercial sources (stores or other related parties).

Taking the time to read and understand these steps will make reading the UG list
more enjoyable for everyone. Thanks!

Hello everyone. The next NESFA open house gameday is on Saturday, November 17th,
at 504 Medford Street in Somerville. Start time, as usual, is noon and it goes
until at least midnight and possibly longer.
There are games for all skill levels and interests. If you're not sure how to
play something, not to worry, there are a group of GMs here at NESFA that will
be happy to teach you. If you have a game you want to bring, that's also not a
problem as we're always looking to learn new games.
  Hope to see you there.

Unity Games XIX will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Danvers, MA
on Saturday Jan 26, 2013. Please see
http://www.unitygames.org/ugxix/ugxix.htm

I am once again coordinating the Teaching Area. This is an area
where dedicated gamers teach popular games to anyone wishing to learn them.
The goal is to have a specific place where new players
or those-who-are-not-as-comfortable-jumping-into-the-main-fray can meet and
ease into some relaxed gaming hosted by enthusiastic gamers.

I am looking for volunteers to staff this activity. Specifically, I need
people who can dedicate 2 hours and are comfortable at teaching games.

So, why should you become a teacher? Well, it provides a chance to meet
new gamers as well as an opportunity to share your passion for a favorite
game. The only requirements to becoming a teacher are that you know the
rules to your game of choice, that you are able to explain these rules to
new gamers, that you bring a copy of the game with you, and that you play
the game during your appointed time. Other than ensuring the game is
taught at the appointed time, these requirements are not unlike those
you'll be following anyway as you spend time at the event. There are no
discounts or other benefits that are conferred on teachers; all I can offer
is my genuine thanks.

My goal is to staff 2-hour blocks between the hours of 9:30am - 3:30pm.
Note the start time, which is set so as to allow time to check in and get
settled.

NOTE: If you do not want to teach, but have some suggestions of games that
you would like see taught, please contact me and I will try to accommodate
these requests.

There is no set list of games to be taught -- you may indicate a choice of
games, which should be playable in under 90 minutes and accommodate 3+
players.

I am looking for 9 - 12 volunteers. Please reply to me off-list if your are
interested in participating in this activity. Please provide:
1) Your gaming preferences.
2) Your preferred 2-hour timeslot.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing everyone at UG XIX!

Count on me, as always.

Anything not a party game and not a dexterity game. I also despise most
Stefan Feld games, though I very much like Burgund and Trajan and would
gladly teach either.
Also, if you'd like to get an 8-some (I mean it!) I have a copy of
VivaJava, the Kickstarter game, which is very good and works very well
with 8.

Porter Square Gaming Hi Everybody...

I just got back from the 5 day crazyness that was Boardgamegeek.Con. I'm
thinking we should play more games!

A note about the next few game weeks. Due to vacations, work, and
holidays we're going to shift things around a little bit. The next game
night after this week's fun will be December 11 (which would normally be
an off week). Then, we will break for holidays and re=converge on the
8th of January. Followed by another game night a week later, on the 15th
of January to get us back to our usual two week schedule. Sorry about that.

Felix

Need a break from the relatives? Feel free to come by for a regular FRAGS
gaming session at 7:30, or go on upstairs to the theater and watch the
Patriots play the Jets at 8:30.

While I expect a smaller than usual turnout, I have had a few confirmations
already, so there will be enough people to play.

Felix - did you have a chance to play the new game released by Blue Panther
Games at the BGG Con - "Aloha - the Spirit of Hawaii"?

Sadly, no. Though I did buy a dice tower from them. There way way to
many new games. I played 29 new games and feel like I barely dented the
surface of new releases.

Thanks!

Napoleon's Triumph is a great game. Well, it's my favorite game anyway. I think
there are many people who agree with me that it's great though, so I'll just
stick with that.

It can be a hard game to learn, but with an experienced teacher, most interested
gamers fall for the game pretty quickly. I learned the game at BGG.con a few
years back, from 4 experienced teachers, with 1 other total newbie. I'm offering
such an opportunity at this year's Unity Games.

Napoleon's Triumph is designed as a two player game, but it has optional rules
for team play that are really fun. It would easily play with six (two teams of
three), and that's probably the best number, but up to 8 can play nicely
together (well, the game plays nicely, but it is a war game).

So I'm looking for other folks who'd like to play the team game. I'm well versed
in the rules, although I'm not a particularly strong player. Ideally, if at
least one other experienced player signs on, we'd have a couple of overall
commanders and some field generals. BUT, you do not need to have any experience
to play, I'll be happy to teach 7 brand new players if that's who's interested.
For anyone who's played the game, liked it, and would like to learn more, this
is a good opportunity to do that as well.

If folks with a better grasp of the strategy than I have sign up, I'm more than
happy to serve under someone else. Mainly, I love this game, loved my one
exposure to the team game, and don't have lots of chances to round up a bunch of
others to play, so I'm hoping to get one together at Unity. So, if anyone is
interested, or wants more information, let me know.

I have an 11:30am teaching slot for Vasco da Gama, so we can start this game up
at 2pm or later.

How long do you figure this game would take, including the teaching?

Sometimes NT ends quickly, if one side wins a couple of early battles. That
happens more often with new folks who are figuring out how to play (or with me
no matter how often I play). Overall though it could run 3 hours of play, maybe
20-30 minutes to teach.

Chris,

This would interest me. It has been a year or two, and I would have to
refresh myself, but I have a pretty good handle on the system and its
intricacies.

TED talks are usually cool or inspiring. This one fits both. She's talking
mainly about video games. But you can see where it applies to board games as
well.
