Hello all,

I've recently moved to Manchester, NH and I'm trying to get plugged into a
few good gaming groups. Upon a time, I used to game with some of you at Your
Move Games on Mondays (2003). But then I went to visit family for the
holidays and came back to find YMG closed on Monday nights and the group
scattered to the suburbs. Well, anyway I'm back in the area, and more
importantly I have a car.

I look forward to meeting with you and attending future events. If you're
curious about who I am and what I'm in to, here's my BGG profile:

Unity Games Etiquette - REVISED January 25, 2006

This is an auto-post... Please read carefully so that the UG list is a more
efficient place for both posters and readers.

The number of posts for the Unity Games list has grown rather substantially in
the past months and so here are a few tips to help those who feel a bit lost
under the weight of the emails.

1. When posting to the Unity Games list, try to keep your subject lines in tune
with the content of your message. If you reply to one email but the subject
starts to drift, please feel free to change the subject line to reflect the new
topic. This makes it much easier for those reading to filter on the subjects
that interest them most.

2. When posting to the Unity Games list, try to cut down on the unnecessary
quoted text (text from the person you are replying to). This is especially true
of the boiler-plate Unity Games material that is appended to every posted
message. It's hard to read these messages with lots of extra quoted text -
especially in digest mode. The number of messages has grown substantially
lately and not everyone can keep up - so please be judicious in cutting out text
in replies.

3. If the number of messages is getting to you (!!), feel free to go into digest
mode where you receive one message a couple times each day containing a digest
of all posts. You get the same information, but slightly delayed. There is
also web-based browsing of the group where you can read the messages online (and
get no emails). You can configure this at the Unity Games homepage (see below
for the link - use the Edit My Membership option from the UG homepage) or you
can send a message to Unity_Games-owner@yahoogroups.com and we can do it for
you. If you decided to stay in email mode, be aware that most good email
clients allow you to filter your incoming messages and file them away in a
folder different from your "inbox". You can easily search on the word
"[Unity_Games]" which appears in every message from the list and use that to
trigger storing your messages in a convenient folder for later viewing.

4. To help people filter on content that is most appropriate for them, please
use the following tags in your subject lines (the braces should be included to
make the tag stand-out for filtering):

[OT] - For posts which are off topic.
[SA] - For Session Announcements (the auto-poster uses "Reminder from the
Calendar of Unity_Games" as the first line).
[SR] - For Session Reports and games played during local Sessions.
[GR] - For Game Reviews.
[META] - for discussions on or about the UG list.

Posts without a tag will be for general game-related discussions, asking about
sessions, discussions of the big Unity Games days, etc. If you miss using a tag,
don't follow up the post with an apology - just let it slide and hopefully
anyone responding will add a tag if needed. Again, most general discussion can
go tag-less. This will go a long way to allowing people to filter on the UG
content. Remember, all UG posts will have the "[Unity_Games]" tag automatically
applied so these additional tags are used to filter and sort within Unity Games
content.

5. Speaking of off-topic posts... Please try to keep these to a minimum.
General game discussion is fine but the list has gotten large enough that
off-topic comments (even if short) can overpower and bury the reader as they
might not have time to read everything. I've gotten emails from people who have
missed event announcements buried around lots of off-topic or only marginally
game related postings. Posting short semi-off-topic or humorous follow-ups to
messages is perfectly fine - just cut down on the original post as much as
possible to keep the read-time short for others.

6. We do allow occasional game-related for-sale or for-trade messages as well.
These should be only for personal trade/sell game-related items and should not
be too frequent - do not flood the list with personal sales emails. If you have
more than one item for sale/trade, consider posting them together in a single
discrete email. Do not conduct your sales on the UG list - after the initial
post please keep all excahnges/haggles off-list in private email. Basically, a
good use of this is when someone wants to clean out thier closet and sell/trade
games to local friends to save on shipping, hassle, etc. Mentioning bargains
found at a store you have no affiliation with is fine (and encouraged!). We
currently do not allow any auctions on this forum (either direct auctions or
links to auctions at another site like ebay) and we do not allow posts from
commercial sources (stores or other related parties).

Taking the time to read and understand these steps will make reading the UG list
more enjoyable for everyone. Thanks!

Oh, well. I have apparently goofed and scheduled the next gaming weekend
opposite a MENSA Regional Gathering. I had asked the MENSA calendar editor if
there was another MENSA Halloween party going on that weekend. I guess I
should have asked if there was any MENSA event going on that weekend.

However, after discussing this with a number of you, I have decided to
continue with the event as planned. No matter what week I schedule this for,
there will always be some people who can not make it. The only problem is that
it MIGHT NOT appear in the MENSA calendar. I am not sure if the policy about
scheduling things opposite RG's is still in effect. However, we should
still have plenty of Unity Games and meet-up members, as well as many of the
regulars. If we lose John to the RG, so be it. We will miss Lev though.

As always, the event will begin on Friday night at 7:30 and run through
Sunday night until at least midnight. Weather permitting, we will cook out on
Saturday night. Either way, dinner will still be provided. There is plenty of
room for people who want to stay overnight.

I have a bunch of new games on order including the new expansions for DIXIT
and CATACOMBS which should be here in plenty of time for the event. Also,
in doing some cleaning, I have found Jerry's BETRAYAL AT HOUSE ON THE HILL
scenarios, if people want to try them.

If anybody wants to volunteer to run the Saturday party game, please let me
know as soon as possible. Using the theater as a staging area worked well
last time, but I am also looking for suggestions as to how to make things
fairer for teams with a home base downstairs.

In honor of Halloween, feel free to dress up, though costumes are not
required. Also because of the holiday, I will be stealing the theater back from
BUZZ and ROCK BAND at various time throughout the weekend to show some horror
films.

In other news, after 17 years, one of the roommates has finally left. We
helped Seth move into his new house today. Ryan should be moving in around the
15th, but he will only be here for four months and I will again be needing
a new roommate in January. Please let me know if you know of anyone who may
be interested.

Tuesday Movie Night in the theater has been very well-received with about
8-10 people each week. If you want to be added to the distribution list for
this event, please let me know. As Christine will not be here this week, I am
being allowed to show a horror movie. This week's feature will be the
vampire musical comedy "SUCK", at 8:00.

The Patriots start in Miami on Monday night, so I will NOT be having people
over for the game, but for most Sunday games, people are welcome to join me
in the theater. If you are unsure of times, feel free to contact me.

As always, my events are open to all members of UNITY GAMES, MENSA and
MEET-UP.

For more information, to be added to one of my other distribution lists, or
to be removed from this one, please email me.

-Matt

We should have a quorum of board game players at Scholars, this coming Friday
evening, 7-12PM.
Four players showed up last week and even more should be there this week. The
auto announcement will be coming, but I wanted to let everyone know that there
will be gamers at Scholars this Friday.
Please post if you might be coming by, have any questions, or have a game
request.
See you there!

Hello Everyone,

This is the time of year when Total Confusion gets ready to accept event
submissions. Is there anyone out there that would like to volunteer to GM games
for TC's Young Players' Area. We are looking for people who could insruct 6 to
16 years olds in how to play boardgames, card games, minis or roleplaying games.
Volunteering would follow the same compensations as GM's for adult events. So
think of when you were younger and what you would have loved to have learned.
Give it a try it is a lot of fun. Any inquiries address to bruce@....
Thanks for your time.

New guy Mike won at Ra, his 1st game of it! Sweet!
Next, Terry, Lori, Rich, Mike & Eric played Caylus while Scott & Nick ended up
playing 3 games of A Few Acres of Snow. Nick won all three, though two were
close.
Eric left and the remaining 6 played 7 Wonders, which I believe Mike won! I know
I was last in every game I played this Friday at BOGS.
I left and the 5 remaining players played Ruse & Bruise.

Hi Everybody...

Once again, this TUESDAY, there's board gaming at my house (335 Highland
Ave Apt 2, Somerville) - about a 7 minute walk from either Davis Square
T stop or Porter Square T. The fun starts at 7:00 and typically ends
around 11:00 or so. Everyone is welcome to come (including newcomers and
friends), but PLEASE E-mail RSVP so I get an idea on the person count.

Felix

ATTENDEES: Phil, Greg, Eric.S, Todd, Mark, Adam

GAMES PLAYED: Money, 7 Wonders + Leaders, Seeland, A Game of Thrones: The
Card Game, Quarriors

GSG (Guy Stuff Gamers) met at my home in Cumberland, RI. Greg was first to
arrive, and after talking a bit about Glory to Rome and Innovation I took
out Organic Soup, with the hope of teaching him while waiting for others.
Well I got the game out, but didn't get too far in the explanation before
we were at five players ( and this game only takes 4).

MONEY: Greg, Mark, Eric, Todd, Phil
We played one hand of this Knizia classic while waiting for Adam. I hadn't
played this game in quite some time, and the rust showed. I was going for
yen, but foolishly used a 30 yen card in one of my bids. I might have
beaten Todd, but he picked up a 20 value card in the last round that netted
him lots of points. Final scores were something like: 540, 440, 330, 320,
230.

7 WONDERS + LEADERS: Mark, Phil, Adam, Greg, Eric, Todd
I was the Pyramids, Adam was the Colosseum, Todd was the Hanging Gardens,
and I forget the others. I played two of my three leaders during the game
(using my third for money); one gave me a discount on building wonder
stages, while the other gave me 3pts for every set of blue/red/green cards
that I played. Toward the end of the third round I had 3 blue buildings, 3
green buildings, and 2 red buildings in play. Mark was to my right, and had
just played a red card to boost his military total greater than mine. But
he passed me a military card! So, do I play it, completing my third B/R/G
set for 3pts and potentially giving me 5pts for military dominance over
Mark, or do I take the guaranteed 7pts by building the last stage of my
wonder? I chose the risky move. Mark played a military card as well!
AAAAIIIEEEEEE!! If I had built the wonder stage, I would have ended in a
tie with Mark, but he had more money than me, and so would've won the
tiebreaker. As it is, he won by 4pts. Final scores were something like:
64, 60, 60, 55, 45, 45

A GAME OF THRONES: THE CARD GAME: Eric, Mark, Phil
I've played this a few times, and always 2player, so this was the first time
any of us played using the titles. I was House Stark, Eric was House
Targaryen, while Mark was House Baratheon. My initial hand contained a
single character card, so I opted to use all lands for my initial layout,
and played the Valar Morghulis plot card, which eliminated all characters in
play. Probably not an optimal play, but it felt good seeing Robert
Baratheon wiped out of the game. Eric subsequently managed to play a dragon
(Rhaegal?) along with a character who gains strength for dragons that are in
play. Mark rebuilt his Baratheon forces, while I eventually got Jon Snow,
Ghost, and Edrick Cassel into play.

The board dynamic was interesting, although I seemed to always have one
player that I could not attack each turn, as the board-play dictated that I
support them. I could never get a character in play that could defend
against intrigue attacks, so I was always losing cards while my opponents
picked up free power tokens. Late in the game I made a military attack
against Mark's Baratheons, saving three weak characters in defense. Mark
let it through, and then proceeded to send three high-powered characters
against me. I then knelt two characters and played the Lethal Counterattack
card, which killed all attacking characters. That felt good!

Eric, meanwhile, stood pat most turns, content in acquiring power for being
the most dominant. We had to cut the game short due to the time, so I
launched one final attack against Eric's Targaryens, gaining a couple of
power tokens. He then launched three attacks against me, taking the power
tokens I had just won, plus several others for undefended attacks. Mark
then took control of my land that granted 1 influence. This frustrated me,
because I was all set to combine this with the 2 influence from the Habd of
the King title and execute Visarys. But without that third influence I
could not play the event card. Darn it! Eric had the 4 coins needed to use
Visarys's power to kill a character (I think he chose Jon Snow). The game
ended with Eric having 7 power tokens and Mark and I having around three.
This is definitely a game whose play will speed up and improve once we are
all familiar with the cards.

OTHER GAMES:
Todd, Adam, and Greg played Seeland, and after Greg left Todd and Adam
played Quarriiors. I have no idea who won either game.

GSG will be meeting on 09/13, although I don't know where yet. Stay tuned.

I'd like to share a recent experience with Boards & Bits. It reinforces how
important it is that we support our local stores. Suffice to say, it was not a
pleasant experience, and I feel compelled to give warning to other board gamers.
