Notes:		Magic the Gathering is one of the largest collectible card games in the world! It is played WorldWide, and the Internationl Grand Championship tournaments are even televised on ESPN2! Recently the cards have been rebalanced to make longer games possible so that players can pull out larger and more interesting creatures. Friday Night Magic events may only be Standard Constructed, Sealed Deck or Booster Draft. Stores may also choose to run one Two-Headed Giant tournament (Standard or Sealed) each month. (Contact the store near you to see what formats are offered.) Keeping these formats makes it easier for new players to participate, and you only have to remember three things: Pack your Standard deck; remember where the tournament is happening, and what time it starts.

There will also be outside vendors and performers from various cultures here on campus. GRoWL plans to hand out free Magic the Gathering cards; E-MAC expects to have some music playing.

I hope you're all doing well. I will be going to the Renfaire tomorrow Saturday Nov 14th. I will be leaving the UH campus by 8:30 am so that I might arrive by 10 am. If you wish to ride with me, you need to arrive no later than 8:15 am. I will be gone by 8:30 am sharp. If you would like tickets, as of this moment, I have just a few left. Contact myself, John Mazzu, or Jeffrey Li as soon as possible to make sure that you get your highly discounted tickets. I will be leaving the Renfaire an hour before closing (approximately 5:30 pm). If you wish to go at a different time, then I recommend arranging your own transportation.

As a special offer, ANK members are allowed to come at the cost of a GRoWL member.

We will also be going again on Nov 28th, which is a Saturday during the Thanksgiving Break. I will be organizing rides for that one as well.

The United States Department of State is pleased to announce the upcoming

scholarship competition for the 2010 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)
Program for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen
critical need foreign languages. The on-line application for CLS Program
awards will be available November 9, 2009, and the deadline to apply will be December 18, 2009.

Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide group-based intensive language
instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten
weeks. Students may apply for one language, and will be placed at institute
sites based on language evaluations after selection. The 2010 CLS Program
will include new programs in Indonesian and Japanese.

Levels available for each language are as follows:
*Arabic, Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
*Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, or Urdu: Beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
*Chinese, Japanese or Russian: Intermediate or advanced level.

Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. While
there is no service requirement attached to CLS Program awards, participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.
