Well, what my original reply said was that I know bugger all about
playing the guitar, but that many of the tunes I play on the harp have
guitar chords written above the melody, and therefore some of those
might be of help to you? They're super simple, though - usually just 1
or 2 chords a bar which I use as a left hand accompaniment on the harp.
I have no idea if this is the sort of thing that you're looking for, but
if it sounds like it might be of help I'll dig out some music, scan it
in and send it to you.
Sound good? Or not what you're looking for at all?

Tony,
I did send you a reply to this - not sure if I sent it
direct to you
or to the list. Did it arrive? I have a horrible
feeling I sent it
somewhere I shouldn't and it's got lost in the
aether...

Hi everyone,
Just to let you know you can download a free, trial version of a very
handy programme called "noteworthy composer" from:
http://www.stagepass.com/download/noteworthy.html
I intend to start using it to write up the music for some of the songs I
know, so those of you who are interested might want to get a copy of the
programme so you can read the files I create. I'm hoping to figure out
how to save the music as image files, too, though. It also allows you
to create midi files of the tunes, which is rather useful!

Using M2, Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/
It's a pity Chris/Dalrayen can't be convinced to come to an event -
he plays the Bourhan drum and could teach you both lots - so if
anyone wants to work on him (looks at M and Debs as well as Phil)
then please try!!!

Hi guys,
I've started adding the lyrics to some songs I know to the files
section of this group - I still have plenty more to add!
I've also created a folder called "songbook" in which we can put the
songs that we all know reasonably well, and which regularly get sung
at events. The idea is that if people want to join in at events,
these are the songs they should get to know first as the rest of us
already know them. Then as we learn more of the songs we're sharing
here we can gradually add them to the songbook, too.
At present I've added the following songs to it:
Mother Earth Carry Me
Sugar in the Hold
What Shall We Do When We Leave The Navy?
Over the Hills and Far Away
Rose
Which I think most people know (the tune if not the words), and I'll
probably think of some more when I get home and can look through the
songs I've got there.
I was also considering adding "Matty Groves", which seems to be a
popular request although I'm not sure how many people actually know
it, and "She Moved through the Fair", which I know I sing a lot, but
I'm not sure if anyone else knows it! What do the rest of you -
should these go in the songbook, or not yet?
Anything else we regularly sing that should be added? (Cries of
"Charlamagne" and "The Blue Song" will be ignored. Persistant cries
of "Charlamagne" and "The Blue Song" will result in the offending
parties being slapped!)
hugs,
m
This is a song Kate Rusby did with the Poozies.
The first two lines are sung by one person with everyone joining in
to repeat the last line, making it very easy to pick up.
It's also not depressing (something rare in old songs and good for
singing in public) and the tune is simple.
I think it would be a good one for us all to learn.

I know a joke about Bodhran's. *looks around* I don't think I'll share it.
I got a drum for my birthday (just before Christmas) too. It's a
djemba-style drum (sp?) but I need to get the hook like drumstick to
play it properly. (For "properly" read "loudly and poorly"). Drums are cool.

Hello guys,
I got a lovely Irish style drum, you know, the one that's a bit like
a big tambourine with-out the mini cymbols round the edges, that you
hold in one hand and hit with a beater with the other hand.
My in-laws bought it for me, but were concerned about the pattern on
it, and whether it would be appropriate for LRP. The pattern that is
on it, is the pattern of the Morrigu!!! Completely by fluke, they
got it spot on! How awesome is that?
Only problem is, I don't know how to play it properly; I know there
is a correct and a not so correct way of playing it. Has any one had
experience with these things before who is willing to show me how to
play it correctly?
I'd appreciate any help that is offered!
Hope you all had a great Christmas, and have a happy new year!
Cheers
Phil

I am having a few problems with my pc at home at the moment but when
I get it accessing the internet again I'll sort out the songbook I
have on there. Some of you ( I know Phil has for instance) have seen
the sheets I did for a couple of events to try and teach people a few
more traditional songs.
I seemed to have missed of the singing since for some reason.
But a songbook is a good idea though you will find people always
bring new songs along.
From past experience you don't want it to big so people can carry it
on them easily (otherwise people will never have it on them) ut also
the print cant be too small otherwise people can't see it at night.
I would also suggest having a larger 'master' which has more songs in
it. This is useful especialyl for the more musical to perform the
occasional song and to add variety to singing sessions.
To get us started (if peeps want a book) I've created a database for
everyone to put down the songs they'd like to see used in shards.
Feel free to add to this. Once there's a good list we'll set up a
vote to see what goes in.

we want to include. Then we can vote on those to include and those

Sarah,
Could you send me some of those MP3's I'd like to hear the band.
And you are not tone deaf my dear, I've heard you sing and you've a
lovely voice.
Cheers

Hi all
Being tone deaf and lacking in any music talent whatsoever I thought
I'd pop on over anyway.
Steeleye Span are another group which do suitable songs. I do have
some of their stuff on MP3 if anyone wants it. I'll find a link to
their site this afternoon, when I've got a little more time.
If doing a search on Clannad you could try just searching for Maire
Brennan as she released a solo album with some nice songs on it.

I got it just this morning - haven't had a chance to play the tune
through to see what it sounds like, but it looks good!
Say a big thank you to her from me :)

I've got a file (or more exacty several files) at home with a whole
host of lyrics of various songs. Some of which I have brought along
to shards before to people to sing. Unfortunatley I don't have the
music for any of them.
They mainly come from the songs we used to sing round the campfire in
the evenings at re-enactment events and include both traditional and
modern songs. I have divided them up roughly and will upload the
Traditional file to here when I get a chance if people are
interested. I know several songs are duplicated in the sheet and
everytime I spot a duplicate I remove them but I always seem to find
more :)
Anyway enough of my rambling speak to you all soon
Tom
http://www.contemplator.com/bycount.html
This site is excellent - not only are the songs sorted by country
but most include a midi file of the tune and the words of each song
listed. Well worth a look and listen for ideas.
Couldn't find any lyrics on line but the Poozies and Gaelic Storm are
two groups to look out for. The poozies have done a lot of stuff with
Kate Rusby and are in a similar vein while Gaelic storm do more
drinking songs and happy sing along type things. Think the latter
would go down better at events!
If I ever get a chance, I'll scan what I have in Kate Rusby's song
book and post it. It has music and lyrics for loads of her stuff -
it's great!
See you soon,
Lauren
