Sauromatia was a tribal federation on the territory south of the marshland of Maeotis, west of the Caspian Sea (known to the ancient Greeks as the Hyrcanian Sea), east of the Black Sea (known to the ancient Greeks as Euxine Sea), and north of the Kingdom of Colchis. It was located in an area that includes most of both the Southern Federal District and the North Caucasian Federal District of the Russian Federation. To compare the size of the area with nations of today, Sauromatia was larger than Chile, but smaller than Turkey. Sauromatia was larger than Texas, but smaller than Alaska.
600 B.C. was an important year in the history of Sauromatia since this was the year when the Sauromatae conquered this vast region which had been part of the Scythian Empire. Not all of this was done by outright military conquest. Much of it was done by economic and other means as tribes that had been vassals of the Scythians were pressured, persuaded, or enticed to abandon their former overlords and join the Sauromatian tribal federation. At this time of the year, only the Royal Scythians (Paralatae) and the three core tribes of the Nomadic Scythians (Catiari, Traspian, and Auchatae), along with the sedentary non-human tribes that support them, remain loyal to the Scythian Empire in this land. Those who waver in their loyalties are torn by rumors that the vast Scythian army that rode off to the south several years ago and is said to still be fighting the Medes may one day return and wreak vengeance upon any who had betrayed them. However, the Sauromatians are a formidable rising power and they are here now.
