We'll be back to the regular schedule next week with Match night 178.
A quick word about Christmas break. Match Night 181 will be held December 15, then we will postpone No. 182 until January 5.
First let's welcome new member Roy! He's number 87.
This is the match report for Tuesday November 10. Here are tonight's results:
Larry bt Don 3-2, 3-1, 2-3, 1-3, 3-2. Laurie bt Andy 0-3, 3-1, 3-1, 1-3, 3-1. Jodi bt Bonnie 3-1, 3-1, 3-1. Brad bt Wayne S 3-1, 1-3, 1-3, 3-2, 3-2. Travis bt Bev 3-1, 3-2, 2-3, 2-3, 3-1. Karsten bt Wayne H 2-3, 3-2, 3-2, 3-0. Len bt Paul 1-3, 3-2, 3-2, 3-2. Pato bt Roy 3-0, 3-0, 3-1.
Some really close ones there guys, with two matches going down to the last leg. Tough ones Don and Wayne S, but we all know you've been there before and won it. Way to hang in there Larry and Brad, two men on the rise.
Len hit three 180s, a personal best. Don got two maximums and Karsten recorded one.
Here's the new-look ladder:

Now on to next week's Handicap Tournament. We have 13 entrants who will be split into A and B sides.
Here is the draw for the A side (Rank, player, average league position, handicap):
Karsten (2)(0)
=2nd. Pato (5)(+3)
=2nd. Laurie (5)(+3)
=4th. Len (7)(+7)
=4th. Wayne S (7)(+7)
Larry (9)(+10)
Paul (10)(+12)
And the B-side:
Brad (11)(0)
Gordon (12)(+2)
Travis S (14)(+4)
Jodi (16)(+6)
Bonnie (17)(+8)
Bev (22)(+10)
You can see on the A-side that the difference in ranking between Laurie and Pato and between Wayne and Len was negligible so I decided to handicap them equally.
The pot is $165 so here are the payouts.
A side: 1st place $50, 2nd $22.50, 3rd $10.
B side: 1st place $50, 2nd $22.50, 3rd $10.
See the posting for Match Night 175 for full details of how the tournament works.
I will act as referee and as such I would like to wish all our entrants the best of luck. See you next Tuesday and Good Darts!

It was a night for challenging at League on Tuesday - seven of the eleven matches were successful challenges. Yes, eleven matches, which equals the record for one night.
Here are the results:
Len bt Wayne S 3-0, 3-2, 3-2. Andy bt Lumpy 3-0, 3-0, 3-0. Wayne H bt Karsten 3-0, 3-1, 3-2. Pato bt Laurie S 3-1, 3-1, 3-1. Brad bt Gordon 3-1, 3-1, 3-0. Grant bt Larry 1-3, 3-1, 3-1, 3-0. Phew!
Only two 180s to report in that whole lot - one each for Karsten and Andy. Wayne H hit high outs of 144 and 118, while Karsten finished 114 and 108.
So it's time once again to hold the SSDL Handicap Tournament. Entrance will be $5 per player, and the League will add $100 to the entry fees to make the prizes a little more appetizing.
Depending on the number of entries, which must be made in advance so I can do the handicapping, we may or may not have two divisions. My guess is we will, like last time.
We will open the tournament to entries by members in good standing only, starting on Tuesday Nov 3 and closing on the following Tuesday the 10th. You can enter by reserving a spot by phone (979-8996) by the 10th if you're out of town or busy or something. The tournament will be held in three weeks, i.e., November 17. Match Night 178 will be suspended until November 24.
For new players who have no idea what I'm on about, I should explain about handicapping. You will be handicapped based on your average League position for the last 5 weeks that you played and then play several mini-matches against players in the same half of the League as you. It goes something like this:
We will have a round robin of one-set matches against everyone in the same division. Lower-ranked players will get a head start in the round robin, two points for every spot below the top. Most points at the end is the winner. We'll have runner-up prizes, and maybe 3rd place payouts depending on numbers.
In the A section, matches are best of five. Points will be 4 for a win, and 2,1 or 0 for a loss. This way a 3-2 loss is equivalent to a tie for the lower ranked player.
In the B section, games will be best of three, with 3 points for a win and 0 or 1 for a loss. Again, a 2-1 loss to a higher-ranked player amounts to a tie for the loser (because they are given a two point head start)
Under this handicapping system, a win over a higher-ranked player gives the underdog a good boost, and could be enough to put him or her over the top and win the tournament. Similarly, the bottom-ranked player could lose all his or her matches and still be in the running, particularly if all the games are close.
A loss by a higher-ranked player could put him or her out of contention, so it adds to the pressure, and we love doing that. The top player will have to win all his or her matches by a score of 3-0 or 2-0 to be sure of a prize.
Again, Wayne H will be designated referee and not play. This time we will NOT be accepting late entries, uh-uh, nope, sorry.
In the last tournament held November 4, 2008, the winners were Karsten (A-side) and Eric (B-side). Where are they now?!
Please spread the word to those players who don't read this message board. And get in the game!
That's all for now. Have a great week and until Tuesday, Good Darts!
First let's welcome new players Marilyn and Lumpy! They are numbers 86 and 87.
Late on parade this week, thanks to too much work and a weekend away in Regina. In a weekend of good results, some of our local players had a good run at the powerhouses from Alberta at the Sask Open Darts tournament and the Riders won the only game I am going to see this year.
Here are the results of the eight matches from last Tuesday's Match Night:
Wayne H bt Andy 3-2, 0-3, 1-3, 3-1, 3-1. Don bt Len 1-3, 3-0, 3-0, 1-3, 3-0. Larry bt Paul 3-1, 3-2, 3-1. Grant bt Travis S 3-1, 3-2, 3-2. Jodi bt Bonnie 3-0, 3-2, 3-2. Bev bt Marilyn (conceded). Wayne S bt Lumpy 3-0, 3-0, 3-0. Karsten bt Laurie S 3-1, 3-2, 3-0.

We are now reverting to regular rules. That means that two weeks of absence puts you on hold, and you will be reduced in rank by one spot for each week of absence after that.
It's been a great summer for the League, with lots of new players and a good turnout every week. Let's hope the competition has sharpened up your skills for the regular season. Tournaments are starting up again. This weekend it's the Keewatin at La Ronge, and the following week players from all over the province will be in Davidson for the SDA AGM on Sept 12.
Wishing you all the best for the season and Good Darts!
If I can't be there on top... good thing to see you there. I must say, I have been very impressed with the improvement of the darts in the singles league.
You keep up the good work.
Yours in darts.

This summer has been the best ever for the League with more matches than ever before. This is our fourth summer playing matchplay and I know it's good for our darts - well done everyone.
A pretty quiet week in darts news. Just to let you know that the 2009 Ladbrokes World Championship from January is now being televised on TSN at 11 am weekdays a couple of times a week. They're showing highlights from some really good matches. The other day I saw Painter take the first set in his match in 13, 14 and 10 darts, which only served to make Taylor mad and come back to win four sets to one. The ten-dart game went 140, 180, 165 to leave double 8. Brilliant.
I'm still going to go ahead with my proposal for changing the format for a fifth set tiebreak if there are no objections. I think the numbers merit looking into it. Out of 825 matches, 49 of them (6 per cent) have been decided by one sudden death game. This is not to say the best player didn't always win. Bonnie beat Karsten 3-2 in the last set on October 23rd 2007, for example.
I just want to emulate other sports like golf and tennis and even the World Championships of darts, who use a similar format to ours and then have extra ends, innings, holes etc, to decide a close game. We could put a cap on the total games that must be played before a break must be taken or even an adjournment. In the Ladbrokes and the World Masters they stop at 5-5 and go sudden death. In the World Matchplay they just keep going until someone wins by two.
Another idea - that's two this month already. How about a tournament where we play matches for money? We could choose a three-week spell where normal match night procedures are put on hold. I'd suggest best of five for the first round or two and then best of seven or nine for the final. It definitely needs a trophy as well. The President's Cup anyone? Entry fees would be matched by the League so it would be worth a few bucks to the winner. Players who are not in the tournament or knocked out could still come down and play a League match or just watch.
We should also have another tournament like the one last November with the handicapping system some time soon, when the regular season gets back underway. Same thing with the entry fees.
All this can be discussed at a meeting in September.
Hi everyone and welcome to the report for July 28 2009. We had five matches played, three of them successful challenges.
Here are the scores:
Andy bt Karsten 3-1, 3-1, 3-0. Wayne H bt Wayne S 2-3, 3-0, 3-2, 3-2. Pato bt Bruce 3-1, 2-3, 0-3, 3-0, 3-1. Brad bt Gordon 3-2, 3-2, 3-1. Don bt Len 3-1, 3-2, 3-1.
Don hit a 180 and Karsten took out a 130 finish on the bull.
That makes a few changes to the ladder:
Andy
Karsten
Wayne H
Glenn*
Wayne S MB
Pato
Bruce
Don
Len MB
Brad
Gordon
*=away/hold; MB=match booked
Andy goes top for the first time with a solid challenge. On current form - three good wins in a row - he might be tough to dislodge.
Hope you're all enjoying your summer hols. August is usually a pretty quiet month, but we'll be getting back into the swing of it again as the darts calendar starts up in September. Tournaments and the other leagues will be looking for players. You can see the SDA tournament schedule at www.saskdarts.com/Tournaments.htm
A popular team league held on Wednesday nights at the Army Navy gets going around the end of September, with registration for four or five-person teams around the middle of the month. Stay tuned for more details.
OH GOOD!! I see Mr. Hudson came to his senses and realized GAME ON!!
I'LL BE BACK!!
See you next match night Mr. Hudson.
Good darts

It was like an all-star night of darts down at the club, with our top eight players matched up against each other. Five matches were played, one successful challenge and two five-setters among them.
Bruce bt Brad 0-3, 1-3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-0. Wayne H bt Karsten 0-3, 2-3, 3-2, 3-1, 3-0. Glenn bt Wayne S 3-0, 3-1, 3-2. Andy bt Len 1-3, 3-2, 3-1, 3-2. Karsten bt Wayne S 3-2, 0-3, 3-0, 3-2.
Wayne H hit three 180s; Karsten got two and Andy was chuffed with his one. High out was a 116 by Andy.
Wayne H and Bruce both came back from two sets down to win their matches. Way to hang in there!
The ladder has a new look to it:

As you can see the numbers are dwindling because of the summer season. But this year is the best we've ever had for attendance in the so-called off season and we appreciate the support.
A few comments were made as to the proposed change in format. The general gist of the discussion was that we are fine as we are. I tend to go along with that and I was really just throwing an idea out there about a tiebreaker. The rules will stay the same for now, and just to refresh your memory since you last studied the rules, here's the relevant section:
oStandard match format is best of five sets; each set the best of five games of 501. This is the minimum required for a match*. A challenger may, however, suggest a match consisting of more games, for example a straight best-of-21.
Best of 5 best-of-fives is standard procedure at major tournaments, such as the world championships first round, and it's how it's always been at our League. Maybe just for fun one of these nights a challenger will suggest something different. Three-0-1 double-in double-out anyone? Both parties have to agree or it's back to the usual by default.
The world championships from earlier this year are being shown on cable these days, every Monday thru Wednesday at 11 a.m. on TSN. There've been some pretty good matches so far in the early rounds. So set the PVR already!
That's it for the match report. Have a great week and see you on Tuesday. Good darts to all -
I would love to Karsten. But the afflicition I have is called "Frozen Shoulder Syndrome" and it affects both shoulders. So, I am pretty much hooped. Right now, I can only "hope" they get better. Thanks though. I am proud of you for doing so well.

Ken, how is your left shoulder? Maybe you could switch it up. Start practising the left aim.

Let me comment on the final set thing.
In the World Masters. It is the man who is first to win a certain number of sets that wins the match. And even in the final and deciding set, the winner is the first to three legs. No matter whether they win 3 legs to 0, or 3 legs to 2. They are still the winner. But, I would agree to the change if it was a majority decision.
thanks
Ken
PS. Wish I could be in chucking arrows with you all.

I was watching some scantily-dressed young people grunting and sweating while pinging a ball around at Wimbledon the other day when a thought came to me. I am going to propose to the membership a rule change.
No, I don't mean we'll have to wear shorts and mini-dresses. I am talking about how the deciding final set of a match in our League often comes down to a single game of darts, and how this is a less than 100% fair way to decide the match.
What I propose is that in any match that goes to the final set, that final set must be won by two clear games, the same as it is in big darts tournaments as well as tennis, to produce an outright winner.
I'll give you all a chance to discuss it, and then get back to me with your thoughts if you wish. We'll call a meeting of the membership at the end of the summer and have a vote on it.
Let me remind you again that the SDA is having a football pool and tickets are available. If anyone would like to sell some tickets at the office or to their friends and neighbours, please let me know.
So until next week, then, let me wish you all the best and a nice vacation if you're going away somewhere, and most of all Good Darts

Hi Ken great to hear from you
A point of clarification for those of you wondering about this
tiebreaker question.
In the PDC and BDO the final set must be won by two clear legs, unless
it reaches 5-5, at which point there is a sudden death tiebreaker, the
start being decided by nearest the bull. Barneveld beat Taylor in a
sudden death in the 2007 Ladbrokes final as you all know.
In the World Matchplay, the format is not sets as such, but the first to
ten, or first to 12, etc, and it must be won by two clear legs. There is
no limit to how long a match may go on for in the World Matchplay.
According to Wikipedia, "The longest first round match ever played was
the 2002 clash between Peter Manley and Bob Anderson. Scheduled to be
first to 10 legs, the match went to 32 legs with Anderson winning 17-15.
A second round match in 1994 between Jim Watkins and Keith Deller
scheduled for best of 17 legs ended after 34 legs with Watkins the
winner 18-16."
And to add to the confusion, in the European Darts championships, it's
best of 21, which must be won by two clear legs, up to a maximum of six
extra legs, at which point they have sudden death.
A big part of the reason for sudden death is that TV schedules don't
allow for marathon matches, but hey, we're not constrained by TV
schedules in our League - yet.
Cheers for now

A cryptic message from James F.
I hope he is referring to his own difficulties chasing rugrats in his new family life down there. Because I don't think he'd be talking about my position in the League ladder not being what it was, would he?
Isn't it marvellous. You lose one match and suddenly you're past it. Well the natural order of things will be restored soon James, you can rely on that, mate
