RE: [SAGA_Warfare] Re: Armies covered by the different publications

I agree with you about army lists. I use them all to get a snapshot of
various author's thoughts on armies. However, I am more of a historical
order of battle "nut." With regard to army lists, in addition to the Saga
publications, I have always used George Gush's WRG Army Lists 1420 - 1700
(1984 edition), DBR lists, Poleaxed 2 lists 1272 - 1487 (The Lance and
Longbow Society), the lists in the Tercio Rules (a personal favorite), and
the very comprehensive Medieval & Renaissance Army Lists 1300 - 1550 for the
Newberry Rules with adaptations for other rule sets. The magazines
Arquebusier (Journal of the Pike and Shot Society) and Hobilar (Lance &
Longbow Society) often contain army lists tailored to specific battles.

The booklets by Peter Sides Renaissance Battles 1494 - 1700 provide a good
summary and starting point for historical OB's and scenarios. I would
highly recommend as absolutely indispensable the two volumes by William P.
Guthrie, Battles of the Thirty Years War 1618 -1635, Greenwood Press 2002;
and, The Later Thirty Years War, Greenwood Press 2003. I would also very
much recommend Robert L. Frost, The Northern Wars 1558 - 1721 Longman 2000.
The latter is great read and corrects (or at least convincingly argues
against) the many myths surrounding this period of warfare that appear in
some of the popular literature.

Ken

Well I was looking to see what others have researched in the publications,
to save me doing it.

The Saga site provides very little detail abut the other items they have for
sale so a little more info on the contents (army list wise) would be
helpful. :)

The medieval rules have the lists for the wars of roses, one of my
interests. The Italian wars, the wars of the Ottoman expansion and the
ECW/thirty years war with the related conflicts are all area's of interest
to me as well. Yes a large scope...

Although I can create my own lists and I know the rules provide the points
to do this, it is good to see what others view the typical armies for the
period. I'm not a person who believes that army lists are the word from upon
high, but they do help and reduce the amount of leg work (and potential
discussions/disagreements) required around different troop types for setting
up games. This is especially true as no points system is perfect.

So as you say they are very useful for tournaments, but they are useful in
other contexts as well. Army lists tend provide a base from which to create
reasonably fair and even battles - which lets be honest rarely happened in
history. However they help make for a more interesting game at times.

I would stay away from army lists initially as they are generally misleading
albeit necessary for the tournament guys.
