I have both the Foundry book on the War of the Triple Alliance and Moller and
Cerda's book on the Uniforms of the Pacific War.
The Foundry book is very good for what it is. It is essentially a guide to the
appearance of the troops in the WoTA and I think it does that job very well. As
an easilly accessible source of other wise hard to obtain information in English
I think its hard to beat and it would certainly give the average wargamer the
information they need to put a force on the table. The inclusion of material on
earlier conflicts was a bit of a surprise but I'd regard it as a bonus rather
than a problem.
It's true that the narrative on the war is a bit thin but to be fair I don't
think that is it's primary goal. The main negative, and I'm not sure it is fair
to call it that, is that the traditional hardcover presentation of the book
means that it is quite expensive. However it does look nice on the bookshelf and
is a pleasure to read.
I'm a little handicapped when it comes to "Uniformes de la Guerra del Pacifico
1879-1884" as I don't speak Spanish and Caliver's book promised pdf of the
English text has not yet eventuated. (Due out later this year) Now I'm not an
expert on the War so I can't speak to any inaccuracies in the text but I've got
to say this is one of my favorite recent book purchases.
The plates which are a feature of the text are gorgeous and the wealth of
information is just outstanding. If you want a narrative of the war you will
need to seek elsewhere but as a guide to the appearance of the troops you can't
go too far wrong. I know a large format full colour format book is going to be
expensive but in my view its worth every penny.
It will certainly be the volume I'll be turning to when Pendraken's new range of
10mm War of the Pacific troops become available.
