The British Regency...

It was a time of over-indulgence and excess, an era when the Prince Regent rules in place of his father who is going mad, and when the world outside the border of England is embroiled in political turmoil, war and drastic change that would shape history in Europe for the rest of the 19th century and beyond. The French Revolution saw Napoleon crowning himself Emporer, and England had been at war. The lower classes struggled to survive while families of wealth and aristocracy ate elaborate meals, threw lavish parties and spent their lives doing nothing but living for their own pleasures in large family estates that were meant to show off their wealth. The English aristocracy existed in a blissful sense of disconnect from the struggle of other countries around it. While the rest of Europe had war in its backyard, they were attending balls, worrying over the latest fashions, gambling away their inheritance and fretting over who sat where at a dinner party. And then there are the 'romantic' matches...which were almost as complex in strategy as a political treaty, and in most cases just as important. Appearance is everything--but that doesn't mean that there weren't many secrets carried out behind closed doors!
