Dear Quiz GB members,

Three years and a week or so ago, I messed around with Yahoo! Groups and
set up the first discussion site for British quizzing on the 'net. In it's
heyday, Quiz GB was getting hundreds of posts a month, and the Never-Ending
Quiz was the source of much competition.

Now, however, the group is rather moribund. The Never-Ending Quiz has been
"borrowed" by A.N.Othersite, and has fallen victim in the last few months
to certain parties' failure to note the "never-ending" bit of the name ;)
Also, unlike other discussion groups, Quiz GB is completely independent of
other websites, and therefore doesn't have the publicity clout to attract
new members. The only thing that's still running well is the Thursday night
chatroom quiz, albeit in about its fourth different venue.

Therefore, I am now proposing to close down Quiz GB. I will be sorry to see
the old warhorse go, but since my retirement I've not had the time to spend
on it anyway; indeed, thanks are definitely due to my co-moderators Stephen
Pearson and Will Jones, who have done a great job, but even they have been
unable to stem the latest tide of senseless spam. If we were to keep the
group going, we would have to institute some sort of approval for
membership, which would eat into the mods' time even more.

If closed, the group wouldn't however disappear completely. I would remove
all the members and close both membership and posting, but I would make the
archives publically accessible for the sake of posterity. Also, given that
it is now hosted there anyway, I (or more accurately, Will) would transfer
the Thursday night quiz session to the remit of BuzzerQuiz. In time, I/we
may work on adding a forum to the BuzzerQuiz site to resurrect a new form
of NEQ, staying true to the original non-dumbed-down hard/cryptic questions
form of the game, but I'm making no promises.

I'll leave this open for discussion for a week or so.

Thanks,

Rob (moderator)

I'll miss QuizGB, particularly the NEQ which I loved doing - but it seems a sensible decision. Thanks to all the moderators for 3 years' hard work. Lisa ...
