Can't stand to do them in pencil! But you can't beat the computer
for fast, neat solving, too.

Way too much, according to my husband!
Thanks for the feedback on the introductory questionnaire. This questionnaire will be emailed to everyone who joins the group. Since you're all already part o the group, would you please fill this out and post it back to the list?
-----
Thanks for joining the PaintByNumbers mailing list! You will find your fellow puzzlers to be amiable friends, invaluable resources, and--most importantly--sympathetic listeners who understand your addiction and will encourage you to nurture it!
Help us get to know you. Please take a moment to respond to this questionnaire. Feel free to leave blank any questions you do not wish to answer.
What is your name, and where do you live (aliases are fine! we just want to know what to call you!)?
My name is Birgit, I live in Bergheim near Salzburg in Austria
What is your occupation?
I work as a nurse in an old people's home
Besides solving logic puzzles, what are your hobbies and interests?
Most of my leisure time is invested in my activity as a scout leader, beside that there is not very much spare time - work, husband, 3 daughters (11, 14, 16), 2 cats, 1 rabbit and some fish occupy me enough
Do you have a webpage? If yes, may we link to it?
No, I don't have one
What's your favorite movie?
Blues Brothers, Blues Brothers 2000, Crossroads.........
Coffee or tea?
Coffee - in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, at night.....
How and when were you introduced to Paint-By-Numbers puzzles?
I stumbled over it at the website of PM-Magazin about 1or 2 months ago - since then I am addicted
By what name do you usually refer to them? (examples: Paint by Number, Griddlers, Pic-a-Pix, etc)
I don't matter , meanwhile I find them under every name
Do you prefer to work puzzles on a computer, or with pencil and paper?
I like solving them on paper, because it's much more comfortable to sit in the bed or on the couch than before the computer.
And I want to keep the results of this hard work - on the PC they are gone again with one click
Do you use any PBN computer programs? If yes, which ones?
No, what for? I'm solving puzzles to train my brain and not a computer's chips and RAM's
If you solve PBN puzzles online, at which site do you spend most of your time?
> My favorite movies are (this is SO embarrassing...) Princess
Bride,
> The Legend, and Good Will Hunting.
Why should this embarrass you? Those are fine movies, and
_The Princess Bride_ is one of the most re-watchable movies in
the history of cinema! And of course, it's one of the most
quotable.

you're reading this via email, you can use your browser to see

I think we can all relate to this! I don't know why everyone around
me won't share my passion for these things! This is actually one
of the gigantic pluses of the Internet--it makes the world small
enough for us to find people who share our interests.
>Let's just say - if it were an occupation... I

Hmm...I'll bet a lot of people on this list could give you a run for
your money!
My name is Sara North. I live in Wright City, Missouri USA. It's a
VERY
small town where I have lived throughout my entire life. I am 23
years old, with one child.
My occupation: I am the Secretary of the Marketing Department. I do
layouts for ads and our promotional items, etc. as well as normal
secretarial duties.
Besides solving puzzles, my hobbies would include playing with my
three year old son, reading, watching television, playing with my
parrot (sun conure) named Skittles, and anything to do with art:
drawing, painting, etc.
Do I have a webpage? Yes I do, but I haven't updated it in quite a
while, you are free to check it out if you would like to see my
picture, however: Just visit
http://www.geocities.com/sunnysara_at_home/My_Home_Page.html You are
welcome to link to it, if you are interested.
My favorite movies are (this is SO embarrassing...) Princess Bride,
The Legend, and Good Will Hunting.
Coffee or tea? Well, I guess I like both. I try not to drink too
much of either, but I really enjoy them. I really love a cup of hot
tea, but I only indulge a couple times a year. Coffee I drink on the
most regular basis.
I was introduced to Paint By Numbers through Games Magazine about
four months ago. I stumbled upon these puzzles totally by accident.
I had never even heard of them before. But, after doing them in two
issues I was totally hooked. I began to wait in anticipation for the
next issue just so I could enjoy my new favorite puzzles. Once I
realized I had received about six issues and had ONLY completed the
Paint By Numbers in them, I knew I had a problem... ;o) I decided
to search for them online, and now am a full-on addict!
I now usually refer to them as Griddlers, because that's what the
site that I most commonly do them on calls them by. But, I found
them searching for the name Nonograms.
I like to work the colored puzzles on the computer, but I find I do
a much better job if I complete the black and white puzzles at home
with pencil and paper. I have completed piles of them in a very
short period of time.
The site that I use to solve these puzzles is definitely the best
site I have seen so far... I feel like I am telling a huge secret,
but who else but you guys should know this more? So, here you go,
just visit: http://www.javacenter.sk/griddler/index.jsp You must
register, but it is totally free to do so. I am listed as SunnySara
if you ever want to look me up while you are there.
I create puzzles using the site I listed above, almost everyone that
uses that site enters their own. The owner of the site has made it
VERY easy to create your own puzzles using her program.
I enjoy solving puzzles of all sizes and ranges of difficulty.
What other kind of logic puzzles do I enjoy? There are OTHER kinds
of logic puzzles?!?! Gee, I forgot they exist!!! LOL
I do not subscribe to any other PBN publishing magazines other than
Games magazine, and that subscription has run out, and since I found
these puzzles so easily ready online, I don't plan on renewing the
subscription.
How much time per week do I spend working on PBN puzzles? It's
unncountable... my boyfriend is tired of seeing them and groans
every time I pull out my pile and my pencil... he knows I'm going to
be a while. ;o) Let's just say - if it were an occupation... I
would be employee of the month for twelve consecutive months!!!
Hi Mitchell, I don't know about the ethics of passing on the cds. What came
to my mind was the fact we can print off puzzles from that site, without
restriction. When I have done so, not seen a copyright sign. So where is the
difference between cds and paper.
Just my twopen'rth.
Enid.

Actually, Mitchell, Sekaibunka is using the site so people can
contribute puzzles and also for puzzle rankings. I'd send them an email
and see what they think. The reason I've passed along some of their
puzzles is to try to get people to try their magazines.

Hello again:
I recently downloaded every single PBN from the sekaibunka site
(see the link at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PaintByNumbers/links/Download
able_Puzzles_001034888810/ ) and burned each PDF to a CD.
I'm in the process of getting the number places and the color
PBNs from the same site. I'm doing this for a friend who doesn't
have Internet access and for my own personal archives.
My question: would it be unethical for me to offer copies of this
CD (at no charge) for listmembers who want it? I would, of
course, credit my sources (or cite my sites, if you will), but
perhaps sekaibunka is offering the puzzles as an enticement for
people to check the website every so often.
What do you think? Would it be okay? And if it's okay, do you
think anyone would want this?
Mitchell
What is your name, and where do you live (aliases are fine! we just want to
know what to call you!)?
Jeffrey Hitchin. Redmond, Washington, United States of America
What is your occupation?
Software Tester
Besides solving logic puzzles, what are your hobbies and interests?
Singing, playing music, reading Japanese comics (I live for Manga), rubber
stamping
Do you have a webpage? If yes, may we link to it?
http://www.serv.net/~santa
I'd rather you didn't link to it
What's your favorite movie?
Don't have one. Currently I've been watching a lot of "Cardcaptor Sakura"
which doesn't qualify as a movie, but it's my current favorite.
Coffee or tea?
Neither.
How and when were you introduced to Paint-By-Numbers puzzles?
GAMES Magazine back when they were first introduced.
By what name do you usually refer to them? (examples: Paint by Number,
Griddlers, Pic-a-Pix, etc)
Oekaki
Do you prefer to work puzzles on a computer, or with pencil and paper?
Pencil & paper. I'm a traditionalist in that way. Besides, a magazine and a
pencil are much easier to tote around than my desktop box.
Do you use any PBN computer programs? If yes, which ones?
No, I don't.
If you solve PBN puzzles online, at which site do you spend most of your
time?
I don't solve them online.
Do you create PBN puzzles? If yes, do you upload them for others to solve?
Do you publish them in some other way?
Tried to create a couple, but ended up with unsolvable pictures, so I
haven't tried in a while.
What size puzzles do you most enjoy solving?
Usually 20x20 and higher.
What other kinds of logic puzzles do you enjoy?
Abstract thinking and once in a while a regular logic with the chart.
Do you subscribe to any PBN-publishing magazines? If yes, which ones?
Tsunami (UK), Tsuper Tsunami (UK), Logic Paradise (Japan), and Oekaki Mate
(Japan). I want to start getting Oekaki Logic (Japan, aka "Paint by
Numbers") and Oekaki King.
How much time, per week, do you spend working on PBN (or related) puzzles?
Egad, way too much. Usually six to ten hours.

I could answer this one all day. I read, scrapbook, cross-stitch,
Bible study, genealogy, onomastics, do math and logic puzzles.....

Not a good one. <G> I'm working on making it nice.

Gone With the Wind. (Though lately I've been watching Run, Lola, Run a
lot)

Neither. I'm a water drinker (with the occassional Dr. Pepper thrown

My aunt got me a subscription to Games Magazine when I was still in
high school. They were my favorite of all the puzzles.

Paint by Numbers

Anything. Sometimes I'm in big moods, sometimes small or medium. I do
prefer them to be close to the same size in both directions (you know
30x30 or even a close 40x35 as opposed to the drawn out 20x40)
> What other kinds of logic puzzles do you enjoy?
I do lots of the old fashioned chart kind. I love them. I have
several practice books for tests like the LSAT and GRE and love working
their logic sections. I enjoy Cross Sums a lot too.

No but every couple of years I'll subscribe to Games or World of

I call them Paint-by-Numbers, but isn't that a Games Magazine

I've tried; I'm still developing a technique..

I like them at least 30 x 30; if the puzzle is rewarding, I like them
bigger. Smaller ones are good for standing in line at the bank.

I didn't used to enjoy the Link-a-pix puzzles, but lately I find them

Tsunami and Tsuper Tsunami both available at

Hi Everyone:
I have revised the Introductory Questionnaire, and set Yahoo! to
automatically send it to new subscribers.
Would you please give me feedback on this? Do you think we
need more questions? Please, let me know anything at all that
you might like new subscribers to share with the group.
Until I finalize it, please don't respond to the questions
themselves. After I look at your feedback, I'll re-send the
questionnaire to the group, and ask for your responses then.

Thanks for the link, Joar! It's a great list--I'd like to steal your
links directly, and also add your page as a link i the "resources"
folder. Do you mind?
Thanks again.
Mitchell
Great to see this group online again, i missed it!
I have a little linkpage with links only for PaintByNumbers-Puzzles.
The URL is
http://www16.brinkster.com/pbndatabase/default.htm
It's very simple in design but i hope it will help the group started.
Joar
Hi, here are two.
www.plala.or.jp/plala/logic#
www.fukicompu.co.jp/trendweb/w/PicturePuzzle/main.asp
I know they are very long, but I copied what appears in the address line
when I opened these sites. The clever people among you may be able to find a
shorter version.
Both of these have archives.
I did have other sites, but a certain person decided to tidy up our
favourites section. What he didn't recognise was deleted. So I am going to
buy a whetstone tomorrow.
Enid.

Hey, Mitchell,
The number place and other weekly puzzles are archived quarterly. Click
on the number place and just under the list of the latest uploads click
on the red. If you look as you move your cursor over the red it should
give the url at the bottom which contains gallery back index. This takes
you to a page of archived puzzles listed by the quarter and all the way
back to when Sekaibunka began posting puzzles at a regular rate.
You might also want to try the puzzles from the puzzle setters' school
which are also archived. And the Japan test for the WPC is also on site.
The first can be found by clicking on the third button under what's new
on the left of most pages and the second by clicking on the fifth button
under what's new. At the bottom of the puzzle setters' school page (you
can recognize it as it has a pbn of the teacher (moderator) at the top)
is a menu which you click and hold to select archived puzzles. This site
has to be one the best for all sorts of puzzles.
lol,
Dave

I have spent some time updating the links section.
If you signed on after the first post, please take a look at it:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PaintByNumbers/message/1
I'd like to have Yahoo! send new members a quick survey,
perhaps similar to the one Jane sent out, but I'd like it to also
include questions relevant to logic problems. Some questions
I'm thinking of including:
1. How did you get introduced to these puzzles?
2. What are your favorite types of logic puzzles?
3. Do you prefer to do them with pencil and paper, or on a
computer?
4. Where do you get most of your puzzles?
Can you think of others you'd like to see data on? Please post
them to the group!
Hope you're all puzzling in good health!
I haven't been spending as much time as I'd like with the
puzzles, but I received my first issue of Oekaki Puzzle Land last
weekend, and hope to post a review of it in the next few days.
Lately, I've been hooked on the number place puzzles--I didn't
expect them to be so fun. I went to the puzzler.ne.jp site to get as
many as I could, but they seem to be only archiving 2 weeks'
worth now. :(
1) For restarting the group
2) For sending me an invite. I feel honoured you had my address.
Sally Mir contacted me about the group disappearing, I will pass on the good
news. When I go Kajitani's(sp?) site, I'll check the bulletin board. They
will hear from me if no one else!!. In my favourites section, there are
other sites, I'll let you have the links.
Take care,
Enid.

Hello everyone.
I don't know about you, but I've really missed the interaction this
group provided, which is testimony to the friendly vibe created and
maintained by Jane for the past few years. I missed it so much that
I asked Jane if she wouldn't mind if I restarted the group, and she
agreed.
For now, I will be the moderator of this group, with the
understanding that when (or if) Jane decides she wants it back, I
will immediately hand it over. Mostly, what I hope to do is get us
talking about and sharing these great puzzles again. I know Dave
must be backlogged with puzzles he's dying to share, and I have a few
to share, too, thanks to my recent subscriptions to two Japanese
magazines.
Just before the old group went down, I spent a few days reading every
single post since the group's inception, with the purpose of creating
a PBN FAQ. I have a rough outline, which I will share with you in
the next week or two, and am looking forward to whatever input you
can contribute to it.
I also want to get the links and polls sections of the Group back up
and running. Links, especially, may take some time to assemble, so
if
you know of any, please send them along. Please don't assume I know
of any link, no matter how obvious or popular.
Finally, I sent personal invitations to those people whose email
addresses I could find in my email archives (that means Jane, Enid,
Richard, Dave G, and Dave H), but that's not very many. If you know
of anyone who was here and would want to rejoin us, please either
send me the person's email address, or send him or her one yourself.
The more the merrier, right?
Thanks for whatever help you can provide in reconstructing our little
addicted community!
Mitchell
