----- Original Message -----From: djduncan63Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 9:49 AMSubject: [NewU] Higami's Response (Continued)Groggily he groped around in the dark. He fumbled and stumbled his
way to the front door, making sure he was at least decently dressed,
and then opened the door.
[Warrick]
Higami opened the front door to a man who filled the entire
doorway.... At least a foot taller than the small Japanese-American
Professor, and probably half again as wide. His hair was dark-blond
fuzz on his head, his face lean and bony... and a scar disfigured the
left side of his face, crossing the eye and ending in his hairline.
"Mr. Koshigoru?" at Higami's nervous nod, he fished a leather
billfold from his breast pocket and opened it, showing a
badge. "Detective Warrick, Pittsburgh PD. I wonder if I could speak
to you for a few minutes?"
[Higami]
He nodded his head politely, and said in as clear voice he could,
considering he had just woke up, "Please, do come in. The place is
a mess. Something happened and now I have no electricity or at least
no lights. I suppose we could leave the door open so we could see,
and open a couple of windows. But, please do come in."
The Detective came in, casting a look around the trashed living room before turning and looking down at Higami.
"Yes, I know something's happened. I'm wondering if you know what's been happening." His eyes, steel blue, were steady and locked on Higami like lasers searching for their target in that new movie... the Schwartzenegger one, with the robot. As he turned to look, the near side of his face was thrown into the light from the front door, and the scar stood out sharply against his tanned face. Higami hadn't seen many, but he recognized it as a knife cut.
"You've lost power, Mr Koshigoru," He said, his soft tone barely inflected. "None of your neighbors has, I wonder why that is..."
After a long , pregnant pause, he pushed open his coat to put his wallet away. The gun he carried in the shoulder holster looked like a small cannon. He wore jeans and a Pittsburgh sports tee-shirt (Football, baseball? Who could tell when every team in town was black and gold?)
"You didn't notice anything... unusual... on your way home, did you, Professor?" The big man asked eventually. "Anything stand out in your mind especially?"
[R--Higami]
