I, too, like the traditional naming conventions, and I value consistency.

That said, times change. Perhaps the reason the Navy switched (as of SSN-688) to
naming submarines after cities instead of after fish was a recognition that
submarines are today's cruisers: collectors of information, eliminators of their
inferiors, and able to make quick exits if an overwhelming threat approaches.

Heck, maybe they even started (as of SSBN-726) naming boomers after States
because they are battleships: they bombard targets on land.
