Not really.  Our destroyers in Surigao Strait and the Japanese longrange   torpedo attack in the Philippines soon thereafter were made before gunfire.

The torpedo was the Great Equalizer ... like the Colt .45 was called in the Old West.   Then look at the doomed, committee-designed DeRuyter with only 5.9"
