reposted from the renaissance Games forums www.ren-games.com A
great great independent store.
----------------------

To make room for a special release event we're going to have to
celebrate both the first full moon of 2006, and the re-introduction
of the new Dwarven army. GW has retooled this army, so we figured it
would only be fair to equip a player with a complete Dwarven Army.
Overall prize for will be the new Dwarf Army Box! Here are some
preliminary details of the event:

Name: Operation Dwarven Moon
Size: 2250 points (standard force construction rules)
When: Saturday, January 14
Start Time: 11AM (complete schedule to be posted soon)
Place: Renaissance Games, of course
Entry: $20
# Rounds: Three minimum, with a 4th to determine overall winner
Scenarios: Selected from rulebook and GW tournament guide

Hope to see you all there

Salutations, gentlefolk,

My trp to Cold Wars 2006 - a report

Got started early Saturday morning, after an upscramble
illustrating the disadvantages of modern technology (but I'll let
Andrew tell you about that). Took the scenic route, got to the
Host about 9.

Well-attended event, Lancaster Host comfortably full, but not
jampacked. Saw more old friends than I have room to mention.

Checked out the flea market and dealers' room. Well-stocked and
crowded as always, tho nothing radically new in my areas of
interest. Good supplies of used and new boardgames for sale in
them, respectively, both military and Euro - 15% discount on most
new boardgames.

Went to the seminar given by Larry Bonds and the other designers
of Clash of Arms Games' Admiralty Trilogy, on their new explosives
effects / resulting damage design formulae. Enlightening.

Was checking out the Ancients tournament area around dinner time.
Learned that another team was needed to fill out the De Bellis
Antiquitatis Team Cup, and was asked if I'd like to be on it. So
yours truly was loaned an Early Byzantine army and sent into
battle.

De Bellis Antiquitatis is a fairly short and simple set of rules
for refighting battles of the pre-gunpowder era, and a DBA
tournament team has four players, one each for the Biblical,
Classical, Dark Ages (me) and Medieval periods. whose combined
scores are totalled for the team results. I and the Byzantines
lost to the Early Hungarians, beat the Rajput Indians and the
Franks, and lost in the 3rd/4th playoff round to a Norman force.
That last would not be so galling were not the Norman general a
lad not out of middle school :-(.

Our ad-hoc team ended up placing 4th out of the eight entrants :-)

Anyway, a good time was had by all, and Rhonda - the young lady
playing our Biblical boards - seemed to have some experience in
the cheerleading field and coached us to the "Best Team Cheer".
My trophy megaphone (inscribed, as you've guessed, "Ra! Ra! Ra!")
sits prominently in my living room.

The Washington Area De Bellis Antiquitatis Gamers (WADBAG), with T-
shirts listing their names and the armies they commanded, got the
"Best Uniforms" award.

Anyway, the WADBAGs have written "The Unofficial Guide to DBA",
which may be downloaded at
   http://wadbag.com/DBAGuide/default.asp

As Phil Barker (author of _De Bellis Antiquitatis_) is noted for
writing terse and somewhat convoluted prose, this Unofficial Guide
is well worth reading for anyone who's not been taught the game by
an experienced player. And you can't beat the price ;-)

Many thanks to the DC folk for their work on this!

So, Philadelphians, I'll be trying to get some armies and terrain
for Books 1-3 together, and mayhaps the rest of the necessary
troops can be raised and a 'Staff College' organized to drill the
generals and form a team for Fall In, if not Historicon.

Aspirants please drop me an Enote.

Yours, John Desmond

I have been out of the wargaming world for a while. I used to play
Warzone, which is now quite dead. I'm looking for both a new game and
some folks with whom to play around the Philly area. Is there
somewhere you guys meet? What games do you play / would you
recommend? (Ideally something I don't have to mortgage the house to
play.) Thanks.

Hi all,

I just moved to Yardley, Pa and am looking for a boardgaming group in
the area. I know there is a group that meets in Oxford Valley Mall on
Saturdays, but I usually can't make it on weekends. Is there a group
in the area that meets during weekday nights that is not too far? I
saw the Lancaster gamers, but that may be too far since I work in NJ.

Thanks,

Lyra

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

Three games played. This is a doubles event. Each partner develops
a 750-point maximum force. The doubles team will play their
combined forces of 1500 points against their opponents. This is a
mid-war tourney. Each person must construct a legal company-sized
force out of either Afrika or Ostfront intelligence reports. The
requirement for at least two platoons of core type is waived – a
company may be composed of a single core platoon. Release 2 rules
are legal.

Entry: $15 per player

Date: Saturday, March 24th

Time: 10:30AM – Army Registration
11:00AM – 1:30PM - First Battle
2PM – 5:30PM – Second Battle
6PM – 8:30PM – Third Battle

SCENARIOS

Each game will be played on a 4' x 6' table themed to either Afrika
or Ostfront. Two scenarios will be chosen from the Second Edition
FOW rulebook, and will be announced on the 2 Wednesday nights
leading up to the event at Renaissance Games (the 14th and 21st).
The third scenario will be selected from the Battlefront Miniatures
on-line site, and will not be announced in advance.

SCORING

A well-balanced tournament scoring system encourages gamers to have
fun and explore all aspects of the hobby, from gaming and painting
to a little historical research. A gamer's score in a tournament is
based on three factors:

1. Historical Army 15 points

2. Generalship 30 points

3. Sporting Play 15 points

The total score ranges from a minimum of 8 points to a maximum of 60
points.

the internet! Just download it, print it and play it, it's FREE.
