Philip sagged, as though the unability to get the bottle of pills was the
straw that broke him. "Two," he said softly. "Though perhaps I could get
four...two for the morning?"

Oswald hesitated, two pills in his outstretched hand. "I don't know ... "
He looked at the Inspector.
Inspector Gideon shook his head. "Best not," he said, not unkindly.
"There'll be available to you in the morning."
Oswald nodded and offered Philip the pills.

Philip sagged a little further, if that was possible, and reached out a hand
to take the pills. Unfortunately, he was apparently still somewhat overcome
with the stresses of the day; he had barely taken the pills from Oswald's
palm when he dropped one, then the other. The oblong tablets skittered along
the floor in widely disparate directions.
"I'm sorry," Philip said weakly, as everyone's eyes automatically turned
downward to find the escaped pills.
Then, showing an energy that had been lacking ever since his confession, he
darted past the distracted detectives and through the door into the London
night.

"Oh, no," Arabella said quietly. "He can't possibly think..." But then
again, she doubted any of them could fathom what that tormented young man
might or might not think...

"Oh, my God!" Marion gasped suddenly. "The UXB..."

Outside, all was still in darkness, although the approaching dawn (it had
been a long night) was giving shape and definition to the outline of
buildings and rubble that marked the remains of the tower block that had
once stood next to Mortmioan Mansions. Two policeman could be seen, close
at hand, talking in low voices - at a slightly greater distance, a group of
soldiers were just visible, focused on something on the ground.
"Stop him!" shouted the Inspector.
The two policeman looked up.
"Hey - you can't go there, Sir!" one called, while the other, of a more
practical bent, ran towards Philip, stumbling over the rough ground.
The first policeman sounded his whistle in urgent alert, and the soldiers
looked up.

Philip didn't stop, didn't turn; he merely kept running, away from the
police, from the soldiers, from the scene of the crime, from the people who
knew his guilt, from everything.

"Powell! I'll shoot!" Michael called after him, drawing his own
service weapon and taking careful aim. If Phillip didn't stop, the
Group Commander would fire before the other pilot came close enough to
interfere with the UXB.

As Philip ran towards them, two of the UXB soldiers drew their weapons too,
and one shouted, "Halt! Or we'll fire!"

Philip angled away from the UXB team, but otherwise acted as though he had
not heard any of the threats. He certainly didn't slow down.

Upstairs, Pamela heard the shouting, and her training cut in. She
seized her bag in one hand and her skirt in the other and made for the
stairs without a word, pelting down them as fast as her high-heeled
slippers would let her.
To Hades with the lift. And to Hades with Fitzroy. If Philip Powell was
going to blow up half of London, *someone* would have to help put it
back together.

On the street, Michael didn't hesitate. *Crack*, *crack*, *crack*
three shots rang out. He would've aimed low, hoping to just wound him
like in those American movies, but the Blitz's rubble obscured too
much of the pilot. Center mass, just like they taught in training, in
the Great War. As soon as the third shot left the pistol, the Group
Commander was running again, the pistol still in hand.
"Bloody hell."
